Samsung Samsung HMX-W300 Red Full HD Pocket Camcorder, 2.3" LCD Display, Waterproof

The Samsung HMX-W300 Red Full HD Camcorder is a budget-friendly camera that records video and still images both on land and under the sea. In addition to being waterproof down to 16.4', this handy Samsung Pocket Camcorder with 2.3" LCD Display is also shockproof and dustproof — both excellent features when the camera is sure to be around sand and general outdoor adventures. The HMX-W300 boasts full 1920 x 1080/30p HD video recording for highly detailed, clear images that will look great not only on your computer monitor or smart phone, but on your big-screen HDTV as well. In addition to recording 1080p video, this Samsung waterproof camera also enables up to 5.5MP still image capture. The 2.3" clear pixel LCD enables composition and review, while 3x digital zoom helps you get closer to your subject. Other features like Record/Pause, Auto Aqua mode, and Smart BGM 2 (for adding background music to recorded videos) enhance your creative options.

My husband bought this refurbished for $54 on newegg.com.. We have used it many times now.. Takes great video and pictures in bright light.. It DOES NOT have a flash on it.. That is my only complaint about it.. We take more indoor video than outdoors, so we were kind of disappointed.. The viewing screen is rather small making it harder to tell what's a good image and bad.. It's very user friendly and the buttons are not easy to take accidents with.. If you like easy to use cameras with great video this is for you..

Useful for very narrow use

Great idea, poor implementation.
What's good/OK:
Video/picture quality: not bad with lots of light. The best feature and best quality: underwater mode when it is sunny. After trying this camera at the pool at home, in Mexico, in Hawaii - I've decided that this is the only application I am going to use this camera for: underwater video.
Powers up very quickly. Records in .mp4, which I prefer to .mov.
There is a "pause" function, which lets you pause recording, then resume, and it is still recording in the same mp4 file. Great feature for longer vacations, so you don't come back with 100s of files on your SD card.
What's bad/horrible:
This is a big one and should come with a WARNING (and a huge con): the door lock design is EXTREMELY unsecure. Most underwater cameras feature double locks for access doors. This one does NOT. Very easy to just move the slider accidentally and the doors pop open right under water. Camera breaks instantly (good news is that your files are preserved on the SD card). I tried two different cameras and this happened on both. From now on, on W300 No. 3 I'll have to put a piece of tape or rig something to prevent doors from opening under water.
Pretty grainy in low light, even on a cloudy day. Lacks picture sharpness in low light.
Also, another con is that after underwater use the microphone gets water in it and your sound recording will end up muffled for the rest of the day.
Bottom line: not a bad camera but needs lots of user-friendly/design improvements. It was not a bad buy for underwater footage when it was $70 or so at Costco. But now, when it's doubled in price, I'd look for something else.
