I purchased this for a medium-sized living room, for connection with a Insignia 42" flat screen (HDMI) and XBOX 360. Setup took approximately 45 minutes. The video from DVD's would not display in the 16:9 aspect ratio until I performed a system reset. Once I re-selected the ratio it worked fine.
Pros:
-The unit sounds and looks great with DVD's and the XBOX 360 (XBOX connected via optical cable).
-Setup is fairly easy using the setup menu. The options are easy to understand. I managed to set it up without using the manual, and relied on the on-screen options. After setup, you can use the manual to tweak more advanced features.
-The DVD changer is easy to understand.
-The IPOD dock works great!!
-I have no complaints about the aesthetics of the receiver/speaker. It fits well into my entertainment center.
Cons:
-The fact that the speaker wire appears to be proprietary and permanently attached to the speakers. There is a connector on the end of the wire to the receiver. This is good for ease of setup, but BAD if #1 the wire is too short, #2 you have kids/animals that like to play or chew on wires. There could be an option through Panasonic to order extensions; I don't know. Check your measurements before you buy, or look at their wireless expansion for the unit.
- It could use an additional input or two. My XBOX is connected to the only optical-in, and TV gear connected to an RCA input. I do not plan on expanding my system, so this is sufficient for me at this time.
- Initial setup, using 16:9, resulted in a tiny picture in the middle of my screen from the DVD system. A system reset, through the on-screen menu resolved this issue. Not sure what happened here.
Other notes:
- The unit integrates more seamlessly with certain Panasonic TV's. I think that would allow for more on-screen control in some situations, and improve the experience. The display on the receiver does a good job, though.
- The remote is fairly easy to understand, but I'd recommend checking out the manual for greater understanding of some functions. Especially the "surround enhancer" and functions that enhance the TV experience that may not be surround-enabled.
- Like most component systems, you'll need to buy an HDMI or composite cable to connect your TV. It does not include an optical cable, either.
I debated between 4+5 stars for my review. It would have been 5 if it were not for the speaker wires and 1 more input.
