This is my third Eureka Boss. I have not found another brand that works as well. I love the design of the beater bar: virutally nothing gets wrapped aound it, including long hair. I also love the fact that it is bagged! I have a dog so the cleaner is used every other day. It is heavy but I view that as a necessary exchange for the powerful motor that makes it work so well. The downsides: the material used (cheap plastic?) for the hose tears at the first joint where it connects with the wand extensions, making the hose feature unuseable. The new design has a mechanical release for the beater bar to unlock it. I like the fact that the bar stops when the vacuum is in an upright, still position. However, after pressing the foot release you must bend over to reach the switch to unlock. Eventually, this loosens up and the bar doesn't automatically lock anymore. I can live with that. Eureka would do much better to have a design like the Bissell, an acutal electrical switch that turns the bar on or off. Since this came bundled with a handheld Bissell, I use it in place of the hose attachment for cleaning floors and tight places. The attachment mini beater bar does a good job, but tends to wear out as fast as the hose. So all things considered the machine is definitely worth the relatively inexpensive price for the deep cleaning it does on carpets. I get about 3 years per vac so that averages out to a cost of about $50 per year.

Love it!!!! My last one lasted over 12 years. The old one actually still works..... just a lot of little cosmetic things wrong with it. I do notice, however, that my new Eureka vacuum has better suction than the old one, which is understandable, considering it is over 12 years old.

I searched long and hard and read endless reviews in my search for a new vacuum. I vacuum regularly and I wanted a vacuum that had great attachments that were easy to access and use. I also did not want a bagless vacuum nor did I want to spend a small fortune. This one definitely met all my criteria and exceeded my expectations! Excellent price, it was delivered quickly and works great. The only thing with mine is it took me a moment or two to realize that you sometimes have to flip the switch from bare floor to carpet to turn the beater bar on. Most times it does it automatically but if I have manually switched it to bare floor then I have to manually turn the beater bar on the next time. Not a big deal at all but you do want to watch or it will start smelling quite warm if you try to vacuum carpet!! It is remarkably light with an easy carry handle for when I want to take it upstairs. When you are actually vacuuming the self propel virtually does the work for you! The appearance is quite fun as well and the bag is very easy to change.

I do recommend this vacuum to people who don't suffer from severe allergies like me. The vacuum does suck up dirt off the carpet but the HEPA filter blows air and dust from the dirty carpet back out through the front into atmosphere breaking me out in hives daily. So that is the only reason I will be returning the vacuum

You can't just turn this one on and go like your usual vacuum. There are things you need to know first.
1. For those who think it doesn't recline properly are not stepping on the recline lever correctly. You have to step on the highest part and click it to your left.
2. For those who feel it's hard to push, after you recline the vacuum, you need to lean over and push the "brush roll control" lever to "carpet." You will then feel the vacuum start moving forward on its own. And yes, every time you put the vacuum in the upright position, that same lever will pop back up to "bare floor." A big pain the butt to my thinking and hopefully Eureka will have a "Eureka I have found it" moment and correct this problem with either a longer lever that you can kick back down with your foot, or just make it not pop back up to begin with!
3. For carpets and floors, make sure you have the side switch turned to "floor." For attachments, turn that switch to "hose."
With that said, it picks up dirt and thread from my sewing room easily. It propels forward making it very easy to vacuum just like my old self-propelled Hoover Windtunnel that finally bit the dust. I gave it only 4 stars because Eureka needs to correct that little floor/carpet lever from popping back up when in the upright position.

On mine the carpet/bare floor switch automatically switches to carpet (from bare floor) as soon as I recline the vac with the pedal. I do not have to switch it manually.
When vacuum is set upright it automatically switches to bare floor again on its own. Yours might too.

Good, strong motor. My dog sheds A LOT and it picks up her hair easily and thoroughly. Easily adjusts for bare floors to carpet. A bit heavier than I like but worth the tradeoff for the quality of the suction/motor.

Vacuum came with a major defect which would not allow it to recline or switch from floor to carpet mode. I was offered by Eureka customer service to have the vacuum repaired, but I refuse to pay "new price" for what is essentially a used (damaged) product. I returned it and got a refund of my money. I have lost trust in all newly manufactured vacs. Wrote a review on this before, but the sytem assigned it under a nickname which I did not create, choose, or have the ability to change.....

This is a very good vacuum except for the hi-pitched whine of the motor. I put tissue in both ears before I use it, but other than that, it works fine. I never encountered this noise in a vacuum, but this is the first time I have used a Eureka.

I will refrain from using inappropriate language as per the Helpful tips/Guidelines. I purchased this vacuum cleaner online and picked it up at a nearby Walmart store. I began to assemble it immediately after I got home. The assembly was fairly easy and all seemed well until the part where it said switch lever to carpet mode. The lever would not stay in carpet mode once switched.....AND the vacuum DOES NOT RECLINE AT ALL! I called the customer service number on the instructions and was told that this was most likely a manufactures defect. I understand that mistakes are made, but to buy a brand new piece of merchandise only to find that the main component required for it to work is defective just erks the you know what out of me. What happened to quality control..does it exist anymore? I was given the option to either have the item repaired or exchange/refund. Seeing as though I've had my old Eureka vaccum (bought used) for 7 years until it finally gave out about a month ago, I seriously doubt that I will waste my time and energy getting a brand new vac repaired. I will probably just get my money back and find someone to repair my old vac because it's probably ten times more reliable. They just don't make things like they used to.

This is my second Eureka Boss vacuum that I've bought. The first one was about 8 years ago and I found by looking at consumer reports magazine. They rated it as working very well and not breaking down. It was stamped as the best bang for your buck. It has lasted well and long for the price. I had to borrow my Mother's kirby while I was waiting for the new vacuum to arrive and my $150 Eureka did a better job sucking up the dirt than her $1000 vacuum. That says a lot.

Bad design. The unit always flips back to floor mode when you upright the vacuum. This means that every time you stop and restart you have to bend over and flip to carpet mode, that would 30 times. Terrible design if you are vacuuming carpet. It should stay in the mode you selected until the user changes it.

You might try reclining it first before turning motor on. On mine the bare floor/carpet switch automatically switches to carpet on its own when it is reclined, as well as switches back to bare floor when put upright. Maybe yours does too.

We believe this is a very good vacuum. We like how all the accessories store on the vacuum. It picks up very well. It is much less noisy than our old Eureka. We like the height adjustments and the brush roll control. It is nice to be able to send all the suction through the hose when needed. We see no drawbacks to it's performance at this time though it is noticeably heavier than our old vacuum.

I've had basically the same model before & knew I'd be happy with it. However, when it came the rotating brush at the bottom would not work. My husband found the belt inside was too large for the vacuum. Rather than reorder or the internet & have to wait again, we returned this one & decided on a model that was available at the store. It was Eureka bagless. Very satisfied with the one we just purchased.

I was given the Eureka Boss smartvac as a gift and I am completely thrilled! I have owned and used several vacuum cleaners from shark to bissel and everything in between! This smart vac is of superior performance to all the others that say they are #1 for pets! I hav 2 dogs and 2 kiddos with allergies... Since using... all of us are living in harmony :) My only drawback is the weight of the machine! But I suppose we all can't have our cake and eat it 2.

This vacuum is better than the one that broke on me. (a Eureka bagless - I was warned by the vacuum repairman to avoid bagless vacuums.) It is very powerful. I had no problems vacuuming my throw rugs. All you have to do is move the carpet level up and it works fine. Also you have to remember to flip the lever between floor (up) or down for the rollers to start running on the carpet. It vacuumed my regular carpet better than my old vacuum. I did not have to lower the carpet level after doing the throw rugs and it still vacuumed the regular carpet better. I've always bought Eureka vacuums because they usually last a long time and vacuum very good. My only problem was putting the handle on. The handle fit perfectly where it was suppose to go. Trying to get the screws to go in was my main problem. I would rather have a taller box with the handle already attached by the manufacturer. Other than that I had no problems setting it up to use.

I have a #4870..the bottom base plate is cracked where the screws hold the base on. I thought I would replace it, since it would have cost about the same to repair it. The new one is not made as well. After running it for a few minutes it got warm and then I got a high pitch whistle. From the reviews it sounds like the luck of the draw with this model. I put my old one back together with electrical tape and it worked better than the new one...that's not saying much. Walmart shipping & returns does get 5 stars. I would give it a try, if you get a good one, they work well. If there is a problem Walmart makes returns easy.

I bought this vacuum for my daughter's fist appartment. I used it myself in my home for a couple weeks before passing it on. Great vacuum for the price. The 4870MZ has excellent suction. I feel it is a little harder to push than other vacuums I have used. Not a big problem, just an observation. Great on-board attachments. I was concerned over noise factor of the vacuum. The last Eureka Boss we owned was exceptionaly loud. Eureka solved that problem with the 4870MZ. Good price, quiet, good suction.
