I enjoy drinking red wine, and wanted to cool it to the recommended 62 degrees F. or so, especially in the summer, when household temperatures can reach 75 degrees. Since I buy the larger 1.5 liter bottles for value and convenience, I couldn't find an individual bottle cooler that would hold that size bottle, even though several that I looked at claimed that they hold bottles "up to 3.5 inches in diameter". The Emerson unit holds 4 of the 1.5 liter bottles, but you have to remove the rack, since it is designed to hold 8 of the 3/4 liter bottles - not a big deal. I set the thermostat to 60 degrees, and the actual interior temperature varies from 59 to 62 degrees, which is acceptable. The wine bottles stay noticeably cooler than room temperature and the wine maintains its taste for several days longer after a bottle has been opened.
The cooler uses a thermoelectric cooling mechanism, which is quiet and energy efficient. The only sound is the occasional whispering of the fan in back. The unit is well made and looks solid. It compliments our kitchen decor well, and sits in a corner of the countertop
