Since I still use a Toshiba 32" CRT TV this DVR is perfect for me. Programming is like a VCR but picture quality is good and tuner is able to get all channels. It works well for transfering my old home videos on VHS to DVD. The unit did reset a couple times till I set the clock to manual. I dislike the tiny remote because the buttons all look the same and print is too small.

This is an excellent product. It has two primary issues. 1. If the clock is set to Automatically set, and you want to record a movie after midnight, the auto feature erases your record time.
2. The Digital channels will not turn fast and if you try to flip channels too fast, it loses connection with the digital signal - then you have to reprogram the channels (takes 20 minutes).
Overall, the digital picture is beautiful and the HDD recording is excellent.

I really love this product. I didn't know what to expect since magnavox isn't a huge name but I am really glad I bought it. The built in tuner doesn't work for me because I have satelitte and my channels go higher than the recorder but everything else is great. I love being able to record to disc or the actual unit. I record almost everything now and hate watching live tv. It it nice that I can record and watch something I have previously recorded at the same time. Editing titles is super easy and I have the ability to record to the unit and then dub on to a dvd. I record my daughters favorite shows to hdd then dub to disc without all of the commercials and it works out great. The only con is that it is kind of slow to load dvds but with a little bit of patience that can be overlooked. I would definately recommend this product to others.

I am very pleased with this Magnavox DVD recorder. It is relatively easy to use and every thing, so far, is working just fine. The one thing that I did not like was the very small remote control that is tedious to use because of the small buttons that are too close together and poorly labled. Also, there is no tv volume control at all built into the remote control..

A modern VCR,

So far works great. All the features I wanted and none of the ones I didn't want to pay for.
All I wanted was a simple upgrade of our old VCR: - Can record all the channels we get - Record more than 6-8 hour max on tapes - Watch 1 channel on TV while recording another (needs a tuner) - No subscription fees
I finally found what I was looking for in this product after spending days looking online. Mostly all I found was DVD recorders which can't record more than 8 hours onto a DVD, or subscription DVRs from Tivo or the cable company for $10 per month. I almost gave up and built my own but then I found this product.
If you really want an internet downloaded TV guide this is not the product for you, but if you think you can manage to type in the time/channel you want to record and don't want to pay for a subscription this may be the product for you.
Only alternative I seriously considered was if you have a wireless home computer network you might want to think about getting a TV tuner card and either Microsoft Media Center / Vista Premium, or if you are more tech savvy Linux/MythTV.

The unit is well made physically. Its heavy which usually means good components. It also works great as a DVR and DVD player. Some exceptions are the editing functions and the TV guide. The editing functions are tedious and poorly designed. They certainly work, but it takes hours to do simple cleanup on a movie. For example, simply changing the title on a movie takes several minutes of fumbling with the remote. The TV guide function doesn't work at all. It tries to download the data every night, cycling through all the channels on my cable box looking for a signal, and never finds one....even though it promises in the manual that it can get a signal from all major digital cable providers (Time Warner). But as the title of my review states, it's still better than paying TiVo monthly fees just to get a TV guide which is free on the internet. And programing it manually only takes an extra minute.

This is one of the neatest pieces of technology that I own. I simply love it! I read the reviews and looked into other units before deciding on this one and have been so happy with it that I'm sorry I didn't buy it sooner. I only have a couple of complaints. One being the remote. (Surprise, surprise!) Tiny buttons with small words. I keep a penlight flashlight close by to help with that. The other complaint is that if something is recording, I am not able to watch a program on another channel. (Although there is the capability to watch another recorded program.) I have yet to record from HDD to DVD but the instructions look fairly simple. I also like the editing feature so you can edit out commercials from HDD recorded programs then save them. If it's something you want to keep indefinitely, just recored to DVD...commercial free!I'm anxious to check into other features that the unit has. All in all, I am very pleased with this DVD recorder.

I bought this before the holidays and was able to record all the holiday specials I wanted. I did however have to split my cable signal to be able to watch one channel and record from another. There aren't many DVR/DVD recorders on the market for this price so I figured I'd try it out. Glad I did.

Some of the positives: easy recording and editing, great capacity, sdtv tuner is really nice, user adjustable jump forward / back increments, multi-title previews screen, protected recordings, easy initial setup.
Some of the negatives: no programming guide, no "last" button, no built in RF modulator, high speed dub is only "highest quality" recording = least amount recorded to DVD, poor remote ergonomics.
All in all, a great value that functions quite well. I am converting from an old Panasonic Showstopper DVR and was expecting something similar in features of use but this has a few advantages the old unit does not. I am not used to having to set this unit into record mode for live TV to pause and skip commercials but only a minor inconvienance. Still getting used to it. Discovered by accident when used in conjunction with old unit, it is the ultimate setup. Maybe I will keep both together. Thank goodness I have a 4 port RF modulator that allows this marriage. Overall, a good purchase and value.

The DVD recorder was a Christmas gift for my wife. It was easy to connect and easy to follow the setup instructions. We are still learning all the functions of this recorder. The only problem I had was that it was delivered promptly to my home, as promised, in the original box. My wife found it on our porch and my Christmas surprise for her was ruined. You need to send items at Christmastime with packaging that does not reveal its contents.

these machines are great, why anyone pays a monthly fee for dvr service is crazy, plus with this you can save directly to a dvd if you want , i have returned this machine because the remote also controled an emerson and other brand products that i have , crazy !! plus like others have said , the remote buttons are all wrong !! the other model (180) has a better remote , however , if you can get used to the buttons, and it doesnt control your other equipment, i guess it would be fine , like i said , once you have one of these, you wont know how you ever did without one !! have had a poloraid brand dvr for years, they are all awsome , but poloraid dont make them anymore . spend the extra to get the 160 hard drive if you can . better remote and twice the storage !!

I wanted a DVR with a hard drive so I would never have to worry about having a spare tape or DVD disc for a half hour or hour recording or a 3-4 hour recording. There aren't very many and this one was fairly cheap so I was wary. I also wanted something to receive OTA HDTV signals since this particular TV is old SD. It works great!
No problem with disappearing scheduled recordings as others mentioned. Maybe they fixed the problem, don't know, but I've only scheduled a day ahead once and it worked with the autoclock set. Funny how as soon as I plugged it in it found the PBS signal immediately and set the time. OTR works pretty easy. Setting scheduled recordings is easy. Buttons on the remote are not to be worked in the dark though.
OTA reception is good for HDTV, receiver even picks up stations that my other Panasonic HDTV didn't. One annoyance is that the coax-out connection is pass through only meaning signals from other sources than the antenna couldn't be routed to the TV, meaning I had to hook up the TV via component cables. I had to find the old remote to switch between TV and AUX. The advantage was I was able to hook up the old VCR via the coax.
A big annoyance is with deleting channels from the rotation. The manual talks about major and minor channels but I could not find a way to delete some minor channels with out deleting the entire, major, channel. Really annoying since PBS has 6 minor channels to zip by but each has to be pulled in before the remote goes to the next.
Another disappointment is, according to the manual, this machine only records in standard 4/3 format. Okay for now since it is hooked to a 4/3 TV but someday that 20 old Zenith will die and I planned to hook it up to the Panasonic 16/9 widescreen. maybe this is why it is cheap.
Otherwise, Magnavox meets my expectations and needs.

I read all the reviews before purchasing this product. I was so excited to get it. After my father-inlaw had to come help us hook it up, he said it would not work with HDMI and I wouldn't be able to get my HD channels on it. I'm very disappointed, but I don't know much about electronics. Don't let this review keep you from purchasing this DVR, just check further into it than I did.
