Bushnell 4.5" Reflector Telescope

Bushnell 4.5" Reflector Telescope

Bring outer space into your own back yard with Bushnell's classic shorttube 4.5" reflector telescope. See the craters of the Moon, the polar icecaps of Mars, the giant moons of Jupiter, Saturn's rings, and two million light years out to the Andromeda Galaxy. The Red Dot Finder scope is easy to use: simply look through the sight tube and move yourtelescope until the red dot merges with the object.

I have been involved with telescopes and astronomy since 1943 when I made my first of 2 telescopes, including the Newtonian Mirrors. This telescope is also a Newtonian type reflector, and therein lies a problem. First it is a "Fast" Newtonian, meaning the scope is a short focal ratio. which is great for a bright, wide field, but the optics have to be of excellent quality manufacturing and precision aligned..as we say "Collimated" Without an instruction manual, it is best to have an experienced person help you to keep it collimated ( optically aligned). The eyepieces furnished are Huyghenian, a simple., two lens element, 1703 design, and poor for a "Fast" scope. Get Plossls ! But, I would recommend, the Meade TeleStar RB-60 that Wal-Mart sells here. Far less expensive. It is a refractor type, on a far superior mount than this Bushnell. And should not need any collimating..ever.
Astronomy is great fun and a joy, if you are not hammered with optical and mechanical issues to ruin it! I would not buy this Bushnell. I have one, I bought it used.I know what I am doing, and I have superior eyepeices

Cheap ... Yes.
Quality at all ... NO.
Flimsy, plastic, not user friendlly, and well what do ya expect from something so cheap.
I took the chance and took it right back after assembling it and trying it.

No directions came with the telescope, so we were unable to put it together. I had 2 people who have used telescopes try, and they couldn't figure it out either. I eventually returned it.

For a product advertised as great for beginners there are no real instructions. The few instructions there are are written as if the consumer has assembaled a telescope before. This is not a telescope for a first timer.

It is hard to focus if there is ANY kind of light pollution. The laser view finder is also not very easy to adjust and align. I would not suggest this for younger star viewers. It does come with a pretty cool computer program if you have the correct longitude and latitude for your area.

After reading the only review when I purchased this scope I though it would be great. I got it for my husband. It was very hard to focus and stay on your subject (the FULL moon). The red dot is a joke. There is such play when you attach it.
The directions are also a joke. Does not tell you what the different accessories are used for. We are returning it and going with a different brand!!

I did some research on buying a telescope and found that a telescope with the specs listed for the Bushnell (Example 4.5 mirror) would be impossible to find at this price anywhere else. After, I got the telescope I found out why...It doesn't focus any good. I’m talking on the easiest thing in the night sky...The Moon. Forget the planets unless you want to see blurs. The telescope will make a pretty yard decoration or convert to a bird feeder. I saw other reviews on other Bushnell products on this site and saw that Bushnell doesn't seem to make good, useable quality, products.
Just pretty products.
