Sanyo Sanyo 42" Class LCD HDTV with Digital Tuner, DP42647

This high definition model features an NTSC tuner for conventional analog channels and an ATSC digital tuner to receive over-the-air HDTV broadcasts and unscrambled digital cable channels. 720p display capability delivers a smooth, detailed picture. HDMI inputs and a variety of other video inputs and audio outputs make it simple to connect DVD players, surround-sound systems, and other entertainment gear. Note: You must have a source of HD programming in order to take full advantage of an HDTV. Otherwise, the picture quality of an HDTV without an HD source may not be much better than that of a standard definition TV. Please contact your local cable or satellite TV provider for details on how to upgrade to HD programming.

Less options than some of the others, but the price reflects that. What you're paying for is a baseline large LCD, what you get is a LCD that has picture quality akin to sets costing twice as much. You won't see a difference between this and a Samsung, except maybe the Samsung looks a little better sitting there turned off :)

Fantastic 42" Sanyo HD TV

I bought the 42" Sanyo LCD HDTV about 4 weeks ago. I am extremely pleased with the quality and value of this set. I was fully prepared to spend more money but found that the picture quality of this tv was far superior to any others of this size and pixels. The contrast ratio and input ports meet all of our needs, as there are many. We love the ability to choose from 4 different pix sizes and can customize the format for each movie. In closing, I would highly recommend this tv to anyone looking to buy. Great value for the money!
Thanks,

ok, ok the only reason I am writting this is because I hope to help u find the same amount of JOY and SATISFACTION as I have. Seeing as to this is my 4th HD TV 2 own in a 2 month span, I was skeptical at first. My first three were all from Best buy
a DYNEX, and 2 Insignias, which all fell short. They were all nicely priced at 37" 4 $750, but if youre like me then you want to be afforidable, but still have quality. And my 360 just didnt perform well on those best buy tvs, nor did my surround sound, it was always buzzing. So anyway brought this home to surrprise my wife, we watched I AM LEGEND, and loved it!! Then to end the night we played a friendly game of NCAA 08, and Shewas like,"WOW, Babe this Tvs amazing". And now after 4 long months of being a poor newlywed , she is saying ok, it's time to get HD CABLE!! So long story short this tv is Great, the sound isnt that bad, but could be louder!! and there isn't a VGA hookup but still with 3 hdmi's, and the s video You should be good. SO GO, AND BUY It.....now stop reading this and GO! and Best Buy should change their name to ok buy.

Good TV...while it lasted!!

When I first bought this TV about 9 months ago, I was thrilled with it. The sound isn't great but a quick connection to a surround system took care of that. Great picture with the DVD and Xbox 360 and digital cable. But.... this morning while watching it, it just went blank. No noise, no smoke...no nothing. After a little research I found that this has happened to quite a few people. So, while it was a great price and a good TV....it's just not worth it for something that's going to last less than a year. A lot of the great reviews I've seen on here are from people who either just bought it or who have only had it for a few months. I loved it while it lasted but I just can't afford to shell out that kind of money for a new TV every year. Skip this one if you're looking for any longevity.

I searched a while before I selected this TV. Was going to get the Visio but just didnt like the picture and the shiny black frame around the tv. It distracted ur eyes from the picture on the tv. I compared these 2 side by side and decided on the Sanyo. So far I haven't been disappointed. I love the TV!! It looks great with an HD picture. Regular cable looks like..well regular cable just stretched out. You can adjust the picture too, like width and all that if u don't like the regular cable all stretched out. It still doesnt look bad though. If u can though get the HDMI cable and get the HiDef. Remember though with Comcast not all the channels r HiDef. Also, definitely get the warranty for the TV. Your TV is an investment with that kind of money, protect it. It's well worth the money. I've had portable DVD players protected by the warranty and I haven't wasted a penny because I've needed them. You can't go wrong. Nice TV !!!!!

Brought this TV home and connected it to my satellite dish... great picture clarity. Blacks are black, whites are white, colors brilliant. Then I upgraded to HD on my satellite dish... WOW! What a difference! Sound is good even without a surround sound system. Though this is the first Sanyo product I've ever owned, the name Sanyo is a plus. My in-laws are still using a Sanyo VCR that we bought them way back in the early 90's. This is a great TV for a great price. Buy it.

I have now had this model for about 2 months and it is absolutley perfect in my living room.
I only gave the picture 4 stars, because this set doesn't go to 1080i, but i knew that when i got it.
other than the lack of 1080i, this set is amazing, 3 hdmi inputs are very nice if you play a lot of video games.
I really can't think of a way sanyo could have made it better

I shopped for a TV for 3 months. This TV has surpassed my expectations. Sometimes the picture is not all that it should be but it is only when watching analog (Regular Cable channels 0-99). But with DVD, Digital Cable and the built in digital tuner, the picture is awesome.
Channel 43 (TVLand) has ghost lines through it using the cable box, and not quite as many (or as bad) using the built in analog tuner. But I am quite certain that, since it is the only channel that does it and it comes and goes, it is a problem or noise in the cable not the TV.
Watching digital cable (channels 100 and up) the picture is better than I have ever had on any TV. But watching an HD (or DVD) signal, I can actually see the threads in their clothing. It appears I am sitting in front of a stage watching it. It is an exceptional picture!
Selling factor: 3 year extended service plan (4 years total) available. My TV is on 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.

I havent even gotten my HD hooked up yet because the picture looks so good as is.

I have had this TV for more than three weeks now. I have had no problems out of it. I do know that you must digital cable to get a sharp clear picture. I had my x-box 360 hooked up to it with the HDMI cable and wow. If you don't want to spend alot of money then this tv is for you. I paid $989.00 out the door and it was well worth it....

This television is fantastic! Excellent sound and picture quality that surpassed my expectations. I hooked up an HD VCR, an XBOX360 and a PS2. I used the HDMI cables for the VCR & XBOX. Those cables give the best picture I have ever watched. Surround sound system connected also. There are connection ports behind the TV for everything you will need. (More than some other HDTV's that I looked at) For the best value for your money, I recommend this TV highly. Watching sports on it, I now see more of those referees's bad calls. I would love to purchase another one but not sure I could get it into the bathroom! :0)

9 months after purchasing this TV we heard a loud pop and it no longer works. The power light comes on, but all sound and picture are gone. Fixing it will cost more than I care to pay after owning it for such a short period of time. We love the TV, but I'm afraid of the hassle it is going to end up costing us.

Setup Help

My Husband and I bought this TV with high expectations - mainly to the fact of all the reviews detailed here.
-
We got the TV home - took it out of the box - connected it and was very very displeased to say the least. The picture quality was absolutely horrible. Everything was fuzzy and grainy. HDTV channels looked like my 4 year old smeared something all over the TV. The colors were just mushing together. My husband was ready to take it back after 5 minute of watching it.
-
I decided to give it a shot by doing some research and trying to figure out just what was going on.
My first step to getting this wonderful TV working to its full potential was to buy a HDMI cable. We went back to Walmart and purchased this for 30ish dollars.
-
Second we had to go to the cable company to ask some questions. The technician recommended that we get an HD Receiver. So we did. That tacked on a mere 5 dollars to our monthly bill. We opted to go ahead and by a HDTV package that bundled in about 20 or so extra channels.
-
When we got the HD receiver, it came with some regular cables - the Red/Green/Blue as well as the Red/White for audio. We decided to give those a shot. Well we didn't know exactly where to hook these things up. We moved them around for a while until we found the spot that worked best. It was the middle for Video 2.
-
We then went to the Picture/Video settings and played around with the manual settings for about 2 hours and had no luck getting that "Perfect Picture". So we opted for the Auto setting. That did it. The picture went from "Ok" to absolutely amazing. Now we did all this while testing an HDTV sports channel.
-
We then realized after watching it for a while that the HDMI cable and the cables that came with the box produced close to the exact same picture.
We decided to keep the HDMI cable as it might come in handy some day, but for now we're sticking with the other cables as its way longer and makes moving the TV around very easy.
-
So our next problem was that the normal - non HD channels such as the news would appear grainy or fuzzy from up close. I noticed the further back we got away from the TV, the clear it would get.
We then went into the HD Receiver settings and set it up to 720p. The auto detect kept putting it to 1080i. I have no idea what this means.. but we assumed it should match the TV. We then went to settings on the receiver, and set the picture to "stretch" vice normal view. This enabled us to use the 'Pix 2' setting. Using the stretch or Pix 4 setting wasn't producing as clear of a picture. So we found the perfect mark there
-
We rearranged our living room. We put our entertainment center roughly 15 feet away from our couch - and that did it. The picture was perfect from 8-15 feet away. ( we have a 20x20 living room) The up close - 4 or so feet away was too grainy.
After 5 hours of testing the picture, 2 hours of finding the perfect living room setup, and 4 hour of internet research, we finally did it. We got the amazing picture quality everyone was talking about.
-
So if your like us and have absolutely no idea what your doing with the TV - Try the aforementioned steps before you return the TV. You will be amazed at what it can do.
-
My husband plays his Xbox on it and was just astonished at the picture quality. It was simply amazing.
-
All in all I would give this TV a 5 out of 5 for picture quality. 1 out of 5 for all of the additional hardware you have to buy to make it work properly. In my opinion, the setup instructions needs to include alot more information on setup and picture quality advice. Having to spend 10 hours trying to figure it out is just too much. Hopefully my review will help someone out and they won't have to endure the headaches we had setting this up.
-
We're also looking into adding in surround here soon to make the TV more exciting. We can't wait!
