I love Philips, or used to, so other than the price that's one reason for the purchase. It played fine for a few weeks but then it would start to skip. After a few more weeks of play it didn't skip anymore, it froze - making me have to unplug it since pressing the power button wouldn't work. I used a disc cleaner and it ran slightly better than the last few times but then went back to freezing.
My friend bought a Coby years ago and it still runs fine. Maybe this one is a lemon like other sites state. I read their reviews recently hoping I could get some fix tips but found none.

I really love this Philips DVD Upconvertible player. I bought it while the "Blu Ray/HD DVD" battle was going on. One thing that I love is how much better my DVD movies look. It provides a crisp picture and great sound. This player is also very slim and lightweight. It also provides a HDMI cable output for your LCD or Plasma TV. The menu's are easy to guide through and accesible thru the remote. Also a earlier review listed that you have to get up and push the eject button to open the player. I have to correct that and say that I found if you hold the "stop" button on the remote for 5 seconds this "ejects" the dvd tray. I happened to stumble on that which made me so happy! Until I decide to upgrade to Blu Ray, this is the player for me.

The $40 price on this DVD player really IS too good to be true. About 5 minutes after taking it out of the box, the DVD player just died - it no longer recognized ANY discs... just kept giving the "no disc" message. Save yourself the hassle of having to return to the store for an exchange - just buy the slightly more expensive Sony.

I find the product a bit slow but besides that it is great. It has played all kinds of formats and I am sure will be updated to recognize more. The price is very reasonable.

This DVD player is a good value. Only complaint is that if you pause a DVD the player automatically shuts off after a set amount of time which forces you to start the DVD over at the beginning.

I loved this Phillips DVD Upconverter. I raved about it all the time...until 3 days ago when it started 'sticking' in the middle of a movie. We had to unplug it just to get the disc out and be able to shut it off. I've only owned it for a year, I can't believe it's broken already. But for the cost, I can buy another one.

If your shopping for a new DVD player this is the one to get. It is an upconvert and the difference is plain to see. Movies are Sharper and the colors are more vibrant. Everything seems brighter and details in the movies are much more noticeable. Hooked mine up to a 32" LCD TV using the recommended HDMI cables ( Great!) one cable does it all easy to connect to player and TV. Also if you have a 5.1 surround system hook it up through that for a totally new experience for a night out at the movies. The player has easy to use drop down menu choices for different video and sound schemes. Sounds like your at a top quality movie theater. Our favorite movie to watch is Phantom of the Opera, we tested out the new player by watching 3 chapters in the old dvd player and then hooked up the new Philips Upconvert. An easy no brainer which one was the best. If you need a new dvd player or want an upconvert, this is the unit to get - and the price is right.

So far so good. The picture and sound quality are excellent. It is just a little bit slow when changing scenes, but not a real problem. My husband plugged in the audio incorrectly. But, it was simple to fix. I would definitely buy this product again.

i have had mine for about 4 or 5 months now and have no problems at all except that usually during playback of a DVD movie, the picture on my HDTV goes blank but the player is still playing and the sound is still working almost like the video wires were unplugged for a few seconds(usually 2-3 seconds). i am not sure if it is my tv either tho. i have a 19 inch sanyo 720p tv that has no HDMI input so i am using component cables. i have the player in the video 2 input now. i tried in the video 3 input and played the same movie, and within an hour, the picture went out twice, so i went back to video 2. if it happens to be my tv doing this or the cables doing this, then my ratings would go higher on all aspects of the ratings. i would give 5 stars for everything.

Understand that DVD players aren't meant to last too long, a few years at most. For this price, this player is well worth it! It is small and lightweight, barely makes noise (except when making menu/chapter selections, which is not a big deal), and you can clearly read what chapter your are watching and how far into the DVD you're watching (some players do not include this feature). It is very easy to connect to your television, I didn't even look at the manual. So far I am completely satisfied with my purchase. If you're looking to buy a DVD player that is inexpensive while still willing to pay a little extra more for quality, this product is for you!

the quality of this dvd player is very good people. the main reason i bought this one is because it plays divx and xvid video files for a decent price. burn any tv episode or movie on a blank dvd and this dvd player can play it. you don't have to watch anything on your computer monitor anymore. if your someone like me i would highly recommend picking one of these up. also it upconverts all dvd's up to 1080 so it plays dvds nice too.
