My 6 year old son just received this for his birthday. He started to work on it immediately. 3 1/2 hours later he was proud of his buildings. His brother (3 yrs) and he spent hours more playing with the creation. The details are amazing.
The ages on this start at 8 but my son did not have trouble putting it together. I think it depends on if they have gotten the hang of the way the lego instructions sheets are made.
