Excellent unit., 11/16/2008

Accurate unit. Have owned for over 2 years and highly recommend it to my friends and family. I currently own 3 different GPS units of various brands and this one tells me the most. Good clear voice. You can also attatch an external submini stereo jack to your head phone jack on you laptop and then connect the sound output to your cars speaker system. It also adjusts itself to the time your at meaning if its getting dark out side, it knows where your at and adjusts the screen colors and brightness accordingly. Has never made a mistake. It might take you a slightly longer direction to get where your going but it has never steered me wrong. My wife didnt trust it when we first got it until she made the wrong call several times and she got us lost and the GPS was right every time and had to correct our trip and direction. If you miss a turn it will auto-correct your mistake within seconds to the next available turn. For the price, this is a steal. Makes your laptop much more useful. I invested in a car mount for my laptop (Acer) and now it wont fall off the seat.

Review 2 for Garmin GPS 18 Receiver with USB 2.0 Interface

Great hardware, mediocre software, 09/03/2008

I bought the GPS18 to work with software I already had, aviation planning software for my tablet PC. The GPS18 sits on top of the dash in my airplane, plugged into the tablet PC, and shows my position directly on the aviation charts. For that, it's perfect.

The GPS18 also comes with software for navigating in a car. I installed it just to try out, and it's very clunky as compared to alternatives (Streets & Trips, Delorme, etc.).

The USB interface allows my Dell XPS M140 Laptop to be a backup unit to my recently purchased C330 and C550 Garmin StreetPilot GPS units. I had tried for over two years to utilize my Laptop to other Garmin Marine GPS units but the Garmin Serial to UBS cords would never work. The bundling of GPS18 with NRoute & UBS Cable made this possible for under $100. I had spent more just for cables that didn't work.

I have 2 other Garmin units in our vehicles and we are pleased with them. This unit came with outdated software but Garmin responded quickly to rectify that. The ability to see the maps on a full sized laptop is a step into a new world. I like it and highly recommed it. Good GPS!

Works great around large areas and on major roads. Some of the streets that appear in rural areas are non existant, some places there were no roads when the map was showing a road there.

This product was very helpful in our recent trip to Michigan from IL. There were a couple of times that the GPS got off track or said we were driving in the middle of a field, but I think that had to do more with the fact that the satellite reception up there was not as good as in other places. Overall, this product was great and I would recommend this to anyone wishing to purchase a cheap but dependable GPS.

I have been very happy with this unit. It allows me to setup a route from anywhere to any where and make custom waypoints. It also will allow you to setup speed alerts for school zones or just general proximity alerts for points of interest.

It will also allow you to avoid any road (i.e. load zoned bridges or low clearance) even if it would be a good choice in a different vehicle.

If you already have a laptop and need a good GPS I believe this is a good choice. I have purchased a second one.

It works!, 10/30/2007

I found the detail of the maps, even in a rural setting to be very good.
Also a change of route or a wrong turn did not phase it.
This is a real bargain to the business traveler. At night in hotel
rooms you can still use the mapping program even without the satelite
connection.
Voice directions add to the safety.
I even use it on my boat.

If this gadget could do the dishes, I would propose!!. Just back from the Black Hills of SD from Los Angeles and It followed me around in large truck stop parking lots with corrections !!! I'm in a Tioga Montara and just stuck it in the windshield and figured out the rest. Only drawback that I see is the Help portion is not compatable with Vista Home edition. It took me awhile to get familiar with it's operation....But I would still recommend it with an Acer Laptop.

Very helpful on trips, 07/13/2007

I am in the midst (almost finished) of a 6,000 mile car trip. On the East Coast, Canada, and several places that i have never visited, it was a trip saver. Very good map, but only updated every year or so, unlike Microsoft's Streets and trips.
Heavy trees, and one really heavy rain storm in Canada stops satellite signal from getting thru.
I really recommend it. Make sure you have spare batteries or car charger for your laptop. Otherwise when when you really need it, the computer dies...
