More bang for your buck!

I've had my new Acer for about a month now and I am really impressed. This is a quality laptop that is loaded with features, speed, is lightweight and will not break the bank.
It's very light and thin (just like the ultrabooks). I carry it to work every day in my briefcase and it's not heavy or cumbersome like some laptops. If you absolutely need an optic drive, this may not be for you. I have a USB CD/DVD drive and use it maybe once a month to load a new program or update. Otherwise, I don't need the added weight.
I do not game with this computer. It is for my work/home responsibilities and it has been proven to be a real workhorse.
The standard size keyboard is a big plus. While I did get used to the compact keyboard on my netbook, this one is more comfortable to use.
It has plenty of USB ports to power your mouse, optic drive, backup drive and anything else you can think of.
Great job Acer for building a laptop not for a computer geek, but for the everyday working world and thanks to Wal Mart for bringing it to us.

A lot of power in a small package.

Great little notebook. It's as small as you can get while still keeping a keyboard that is comfortable to touch type on. CPU is plenty capable of anything you'll throw at it. The only time I see much difference between this and an i5-2500K quad desktop is in movie encoding and that isn't a task you buy something like this for.
I was a little annoyed at first with the color. Picture clearly shows an all black machine but mine came with the "brushed aluminium" silverish colored lid. It doesn't look bad in any way but it's not what I wanted. It's clearly not aluminum and just seems a little tacky to me when something tries to fake it. Just a personal preference. Many will prefer the brushed look. I just wanted black.
Machine comes loaded with bloatware but it all uninstalls cleanly. It's pretty obvious what is junk and what to keep. Running Win7 home premium which is perfect for the VAST majority of people. You can upgrade to Win8 for 15 bucks right now but I'd avoid it personally. Windows 8 is a trainwreck in my opinion unless you are using a touchscreen and even that is debatable.
I swapped the stock hard disk with an SSD almost immediately and I'm using it in a USB3 enclosure for bulk storage. Speaking of USB3 this has every modern port you could need. HDMI, USB3, Gigabit, N wireless, bluetooth. It's all there.
Mine came with a synaptics touchpad that is quite capable. Just make sure you update to the latest driver from the synaptics site, not acer. The factory driver stuttered on 2 finger scrolling whereas the updated driver made the touchpad quite good. Almost macbook levels of good. I've read reviews that seemed to indicate not all of these come with the synaptics touchpad so just keep an eye on it. You want this one, not the other.
The wifi radio (atheros I believe) gets good reception and has given me zero trouble. The bluetooth is broadcom and uses the widcomm stack which is excellent. Paired with my phone and some headphones without trouble.
Battery life isn't fantastic but it's a solid 4 hours of actually being productive. Would love to find a 6 cell battery though. A second power adapter can easily be had for under 20 bucks shipped from several sources.
Screen isn't IPS but it's more than serviceable. Good for head on productivity and such but this isn't a screen to share a movie on. The resolution is a good match for the screen size. It's a glossy type screen. Some people hate them, some love them. Your call.
The speakers are pathetically poor. Barely good enough for skype. Pack some headphones as the jack works just fine. Trust me I know people go overboard in reviews but they are in fact THAT BAD. My daughters ipod touch has a better speaker on it. Even the cheapest of the cheap pair of earbuds will be a dramatic improvement.
The webcam is nothing special but works fine for skype. People said I looked a little darker than normal but the kids can talk to grandma no problem. The built in mic didn't give me any trouble either.
Lappy is easy to upgrade. 1 screw removes a large panel on the bottom that gives you access to anything you'd ever realistically need. The hard disk is easy to swap and both DIMM slots are easily accessed. Just keep in mind you'll need a 7MM drive if you replace the disk. They are pretty common. I'm using a samsung 830 SSD if you are looking for a specific suggestion. It really makes the machine fly.
6GB of RAM is very nice and more than enough for any task this will be used for. I've found no reason to upgrade this to the typical 8GB that is usually the first purchase for any machine I get my hands on. Good job Acer.
The HD4000 graphics handle light to medium gaming surprisingly well. Torchlight 2, Diablo 3 and WoW all are perfectly playable at stock resolution. Wow choked when outputted to a 1080p monitor but again this isn't the purpose of this machine. For some light gaming on the road or in a hotel room it does the job quite well.
Machine stays pretty cool under normal usage with an SSD. Got a little warm while running the games but it's not likely you'll try to balance something this small in your lap while playing a 3D game anyway. Runs perfectly fine under full load for extended periods when on a flat surface. Fan stays pretty quiet except for full load and even then it's not too loud.
Comes with a serviceable neoprene slip case. It's nothing super fancy but it's a nice touch that it's included. I have no doubt it would protect the machine from scratches well enough but it's not very thick and doesn't provide much cushion. Still free is free and it'll do the job if you need something on day 1.
Overall a great machine. I've been using this much more than my desktop since buying it. It's a fantastic couch surfer and other than intense gaming and the occasional movie conversion for an ipad there is nothing my desktop really does better. This could EASILY serve as a primary machine especially since it will hook up to a monitor and keyboard/mouse very easily to act as a desktop.

This little laptop is just what I needed. It's lite weight...easy to travel with and has the power of my desktop. The speaker however is not very loud, additional speakers many be needed. But I am still very happy with my little PC.

Best 11.6" notebook to date

This particular Acer i5 notebook is without a doubt the best travel notebook I have used and the best 11.6" notebook/netbook my research turned up. I have had a very good experence with this unit and unlike other size comprable C-60/C-70 and ARM type CPU units, this unit actually has real-world business performance metrics. The only design feature I'd change is to add mSATA drive capability so a "m" class SSD drive could be used for the operating and then add a standard 2.5" 1TB drive for the data drive, If Acer cwould come up with this configuration it would be the undisputed market leader in termes of sales for 11.6" notebooks. In any case I highly recommned this unit.

Acer --- Love it!

I had a net book before and loved the convenience but it was under powered. I had purchased a 15" laptop but it was big bulky and heavy. I couldn't imagine carrying it around easily. Tablets are trendy and sleek, but I want a key board, some powere, and memory. Plus I can use my mobile for what tablets provide.
I wanted something that was powerful, light weight, had a good battery life, big clear screen that I could use for word processing, excel, reading and preparing powerpoints. Something that hit a sweet spot right in between.
The Acer fit the bill nicely. Love it!
For the $$$ its a great value.

Great features in a small package

I bought this laptop mainly to act as a backup device for photos on a 2 week photo safari in Africa. I needed something light and compact, but with plenty of horsepower to copy photos quickly. But I also wanted a computer that would serve me well all around for other uses after the trip. Weighing only 2.98 pounds, this seemed like a perfect fit for travel.
For anyone not used to a fairly small keyboard, the size may take some getting used to. The trade-off for getting a small computer is it's a little bit difficult to use if you plan to be doing a lot of typing. I do not see this as an issue because I do not plan to be typing a lot on it, and I also have one of those roll up, full size rubber keyboards that I could use with it if needed.
The items that made this computer an attractive value compared to others I looked at were the fast and powerful i5-3317 processor, 6 GB memory, 500 GB hard drive, usb 3, and Windows 7. This little unit runs Photoshop CS6 as fast if not faster than my i7-920 desktop. The USB3 was also something I required because I need to back up large numbers of photos quickly without the fear of running the battery down. Doing a quick test with a USB 3 card reader, I transferrred 4GB of photos from a CF card to this laptop in 1 minute and 36 seconds. The same exact folder of photos took 3 minutes and 51 seconds with my usb 2 desktop and i7-920 processor. I was delighted with transfer speed amost 3 times as fast as I have on my home system.
This laptop does not have a CD or DVD writer due to its small size. But with today's small and slim external DVD writers avaialable for around $40 or $50, this was not a deal-breaker. I made my recovery DVDs using one of those and it was very easy. I also used the external DVD writer to load Photoshop CS6. You have the option of using a 16 GB jump drive for the backups, but I did not feel it was practical to tie up a jump drive forever on the odd chance that I may need the backup. DVD backup makes a lot more sense. You also have the option of using the compter's built in backup partition for recovery, but the drawback is if you have a total hard disk failure, this would not be available.
I've only had this computer for few weeks and I have not used it a great deal yet. But in the time I've had it and used it, I feel it is a very solid package and it's very fast. CNET reviews on this item indicated that the two negatives were a relatively short battery life (rated at 5 hours) and that it was a little bit thicker than some of the newer ultra thin laptops. If you feel you need more battery life, you do have the option of purchasing a spare battery for only $40. Since the battery is also fairly small and light weight, this would be a good option for someone who needs it.
One last thing that was a MUST for me is this computer has the Windows 7, home premium 64-bit operating system. It appears that Windows 8 is a train wreck, so I was not about to purchase a Windows 8 laptop. We have Windows 7, 64 bit operating systems on 2 desktop computers and on a larger laptop and are very pleased with it.
Once this model sells out, you would be stuck with windows 8 as all the new systems coming out have it.

This is a great laptop if you need a relatively powerful, lightweight machine. 64-bit Windows 7 with 6GB RAM is also very good. Can carry around machine without it being painful to carry; weighs about 3 lbs. Get a bluetooth mouse and you have full use of the 3 USB ports (1 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0). An overall great buy!
