Review 2 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
Upgrade OS and RAM to make it faster !!

This little netbook comes with Win7 Starter. This is the light version of Win7 and has all of the functions I need but Win7 Starter limits the RAM size recognition (it only recognizes up to 2GB of RAM). So I did some research and found out that you can actually upgrade memory higher than 2GB and also it can improve the performance dramatically !! Here is how.
Step1: Upgrade OS from Win7 Start to Win7 32-bit or higher I installed previously purchased Win7 Pro 32-bit to my 4010u. With this OS, I can make 4010u to recognize RAM size up to 2.99GB. I heard if you install 64-bit version, you can recognize higher memory size upto 4GB. The challenge is since this PC does not come with a CD/DVD drive, I installed Win7 Pro from USB thumb drive. If you have a external CD/DVD drive, use it, but since I don't, I used my desktop PC and created an ISO file from CD, then installed from the USB thumb drive. There are many instructions available online so just google it. After I installed Win7 Pro, I went the Gateway site, downloaded all drivers and installed them. When I finished installing Win7 Pro, I found many drivers are missing and some functionality became unstable (e.g., touch pad). So you must install all drivers listed in this site to fix all of that. You don't need to install Gateway applications which you can find them on the same website but I only installed the WebCam app.
Step2: RAM upgrade from 1GB to 4GB After Win7 Upgrade, I bought following memory from Amazon. I bought Crucial 4GB Single DDR3 1066 MT/s (PC3-8500) CL7 SODIMM 204-Pin Notebook Memory Module CT51264BC1067 for around $26. You can find the instruction of how to open 4010u and install RAM at following Youtube site. The netbook on this video is different from 4010u but it has a same exact design so you can apply same procedures to open 4010u and install RAM. Just search for "How-To: Gateway LT4004U Netbook RAM and Hard Drive Access"
After these upgrade, you can run this netbook much much faster !!

Review 3 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
I already had this exact computer, but it was several years old. Still works pretty well but I got a virus I couldn't get rid of, and my cats knocked off a few keys so I decided to just go ahead and get a new one. These little computers are super easy to set up. The batteries last for hours (probably around 4-6) and they don't get hot on your lap. They're lightweight and I can carry it anywhere. I've dropped my old one on the floor so many times I can't count them and it still works (not that I'd recommend that lol).
Anyway, I don't really have any complaints about this computer. It does what it's supposed to do. It's fast, easy to operate and durable. I have no qualms about recommending this computer to anybody that wants a netbook.

Great for old fingers vs touch screens and tablets

Needed a light weight computer for real lap use. Tried 10" tablets (Lenovo and Kindle) but did not like touchscreen operating systems (such Windows 8 and Android) and so stayed with Windows 7 and Starter Set is all most of us need. Note...77 year old fingers are too insensitive for accurate touchscreen use. At under $200, only 2.4 lb weight, 4+ hours battery, this netbook has proven great. But do recommend upgrading to 2 gb memory which can be done by $15 purchase (crucial.com) and getting a local PC shop to fit it (involves difficulty in removing keyboard) for basic charge of $24. .

Review 5 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
I bought this for my teenager. She had 2 complaints. One that it runs really slow and that the battery runs out quick. I think it serves its purpose for her just slowly.

Review 7 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
If you need a small laptop that's a good value this is it. It doesn't have a very big screen or keyboard but it works great. There it doesn't have a dvd/cd drive. It won't do a lot of complicated stuff but if you are looking for something to do general email, facebook, etc it's perfect. I really love it.

Review 9 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
It does what I hoped and is cheap, cheap, cheap, for sure. That said, I bought it because I was so happy with my old Gateway lt2014u, and this is substantially slower. Get this if you're looking for something for the occasional train or plane ride.

Review 10 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
Great netbook computer. Quality wormanship throughout. Upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate x86 and Pny 4 gig memory. Maybe Scorpio black 750 gig HDD next. Only bad thing is no 64 bit drivers for the display. And for some reason the brightness control buttons are reversed...

Review 12 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
I was looking for an inexpensive small laptop to do mostly word processing and basic internet access- check and send email, bill pay, basic google/information searches. I thought this would be a good fit. I had read the reviews about the computer being slow, but figure for what I needed it for, it wouldn't matter. I was wrong. This computer was SO slow it didn't even work. You could type a few things and then it would stop, the cursor would circle and then I would get program not responding. The same thing happened when ever I tried to go online. I could pull up a web page, type in what I was looking for or the site, and then once in the site, I would get the circling cursor and "program not responding" I tried removing a lot of unneeded programs, etc. but nothing helped. Ended up returning the computer after a week. Do not recommend.

Review 14 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
I got this netbook mainly for when I'm traveling, so I'll be able to skype with my husband and go online and not have to lug around my normal laptop though out the airport. The size is very convenient for traveling. The netbook of course will be a bit slower than a laptop computer, but it still gets the job done for what I need it for. When purchasing, remember it will not have all the same functions as a regular laptop. And due to it's size it does not have a cd drive, but you can always purchase an external drive if you really need one.

Review 19 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
As a new beginner to computers, this item was a great pick. Easy to navigate and upload softwares. Only problem i noticed is that the keyboard doesn't come with a light, so you always need to use it in a lighted environment.

Review 20 for Gateway River Black 10.1" LT4010u Netbook PC with Intel Atom N2600 Processor and Windows 7 Starter
It is just too slow. At first, there were about 82 Windows 7 updates that needed to be made. I figured that that was causing the slowness. But I rebooted after the updates, and it is still too slow. Maybe it cannot handle the anti-virus software on it.
