Record media in high resolution with the Magnavox 320GB HDD and DVD Recorder. This HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner lets you watch, forward, rewind or freeze live TV while recording. With a hard drive capacity of 320 GB, you can put an end to disorganized drawers of VHS tapes by selecting media to watch in-menu. Featuring 1080p up-conversion, the Magnavox HDD DVD Recorder provides faithfully high definition recording of your favorite shows or movies. Unlike TiVo, there is no monthly subscription fee and it functions much like a VCR. With 4-way dubbing and Dolby Digital stream out, the Magnavox 320GB HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner will become an indispensible part of your TV-watching regimen. A DV-input allows you to connect the device to other electronics for storage so that you can keep recording your favorite shows. If you're looking for a smart digital recording solution, consider buying the Magnavox 320GB HDD and DVD Recorder.
If you are like me and HATE to have to PAY for commercialized TV,,, then this unit may be a blessing for you. Set the timer and record the program you want to watch to the hard drive. Next, you can edit out the commercials and then watch the program or burn it to a DVD and then watch it without commercials. The only issues I've incurred so far isn't so much the unit, but with the remote control. In my opinion, it isn't laid out very well for editing which to me is the MAIN purpose for a DVD recorder with a HHD. I also think it would be real nice if I could remove the stupid layering commercials that totally ruin some really good movies that are broadcast by telling me constantly what I already know!!!!! Other than these ventings, I'm sure you will really like this unit...

Review 3 for Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, 320GB
Does what i want it to do. I can watch a show and record another , but you have to use a splitter ,I Have not tried to record to a DVD or to program a show yet. I just press the record button on the remote for the show i want to record, then switch to the other show i want to watch. When the recorded show is over, all i do is press the stop button. The reason i give 4 stars is because of the splitter and it is not HD just HQ . The HQ to me is a step up from a VCR. I have only had this for a very short time so opinion may change later. The FF/Pause and rewind work perfect for me. I will update my review at a later date when i get more familiar with the machine.

WITHOUT a cable box, you don't need a splitter. Run the coax to the MAG first then on to the TV and the Mag will pass the raw cable or antenna signal to your TV for tuning with its tuner, while being able to record different channels with the Mag's tuner (the Mag's coax circuit is an amplified splitter).
Connect the Mag separately to your TV to see internal Mag stuff (menus, channels, recorded titles, DVDs).
Even with most cable boxes you don't need a splitter. With the Mag on the coax in front of a cable box, the Mag will be able to tune any non-scrambled channels your cable service delivers, while the box will be able to tune all channels, whether scrambled or not.
With some cable boxes that require comm. back to the cableco for guide maintenance or ordering PPV/VOD thru the box, you can still record one channel while watching a different channel if you put a bidirectional 2-way splitter on the incoming cable coax, with one output to the box and one to the Mag.
Both the Mag and the box still need their separate connections to the TV

The dvr worked correctly for 5 months, then the tuner only receives one channel. It only has a 90 day warranty. I am told it needs another tuner board installed.

If you were told that tuner info by the Funai/Magnavox telephone support people, they are most probably WRONG, as they have consistently been in advising MANY other people!
If you have cable, one likely reason for losing channels is that the cableco started scrambling all their channels, which the FCC has recently allowed them to do if they switch to an all-digital system (esp. true with Comcast).

The Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, 320 GB is probably the easiest recorder to set up that I have ever owned. I have owned several. The Pros and Cons of this recorder compared to other recorders I have owned.
Recording programs is much easier without the hassle of recording on DVD-RW. Deleting is a much faster process. Picture quality is superior and recording capacity so much greater. The manual is more user friendly than most manuals.
Dubbing from HDD to DVD is a long tedious process. I found that the price was a little steep. Hoping that the life expectancy of this recorder exceeds the others.

Review 6 for Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, 320GB
This replaced a 12 year old DVR because the old one only had an analog tuner and I canceled cable. Most people in the Phoenix area can't get NBC with an antenna. My 60" TV couldn't, either, but this DVR DOES! The instruction manual will give you a migraine, but the controls are actually easy to understand - just don't read the manual.

Great for Recording Over the Air Programs for Free

Great for recording over the air HD TV broadcast programs onto a hard drive for free. It's just like using an old VCR recorder but without tapes or DVDs but recording in much higher quality. The 320 GB hard drive can record hundred of programs and you get a small preview image of the recorded program instead of just a list so you can find the show you are looking for easier. Hookup is easy especially if you use HDMI. The manual is not very user friendly, but has all the information you need if you look hard enough. Picture quality of the recordings is not the same quality as the original program, but close enough and way better than the old VCR tape recordings.
The two things that I don't like about it is that the recorded picture size is smaller than the original aired program. You can zoom the picture 1.2X but you lose some of the picture on the sides. The other thing is the remote control is not that intuitive with oddly placed buttons but you get used to it after awhile.
Overall it was worth buying. There aren't many options for hard drive DVRs out there so I'm glad that I found this one because I would hate to have to pay a monthly fee just to record TV programs.

Review 9 for Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, 320GB
The quality is fair but not as good as my Pioneer Hdd Recorder but since no on else manufatures this product anymore you don't have many choices . Their customer service does not seem very knowledgeable . A few times different operators had to get help to answer questions so there is limited technical help . But it is worth the money for it does bring in digital channels .

I bought this unit because it has a tuner which I thought would enable me to watch one channel and record another." Well, apparently, because I have a cable box IT CAN'T DO THAT. It's going back!

I needed a machine to replace my old Panasonic DVR that got damaged in a minor power surge. I have been using a digital TV convertor box to watch TV. This machine is a great replacement with a bigger hard drive (320 GB). Now I don't need the convertor box and can program a variety of digital TV channels. It was sold at a decent price and the shipping was outstanding.

Unit is not capable to record one channel while watching another. The unit must be on and the TV has to be on also or you'll record a black screen. I returned my unit back to Wall-Mart.

Black Screen?
Posted 05/12/2013
Are you sure you had your cable hooked up correctly? It's never been that you have to have your TV on to record. The only reason I can think of for this is that you, somehow, have your cable running to the TV first then to the Recorder, rather than the other way around. However, if you do indeed have it as the latter, then like ajo2 said, "operator error". You must have something not configured correctly in the machine settings. It is also possible that, as otherwise rare as it is, you just plain got yourself a defective machine.
The original unit I got was a lemon. It failed to finish channel discovery during setup, though it did find the channels. I had to power cycle to end discovery. I ended-up returning it, however, as it would reset its date after about an hour. I reset the date/time several times and it would always reset back to July 2009.
Walmart was very good about returning the unit at the local store and credited by credit card. But I had to go through the effort of repurchasing the 2nd unit on the web site.
After a few weeks, the 2nd unit is working fine. It does everything I expected. Having a number of connection options is good and I can record from the raw cable input and from my cable set-top box. The standard picture quality is OK.
I've done some high speed dubbing from DVD to HDD. Unfortunately, high speed dubbing is only available when both the source and destination qualities are "standard". That's common for me, si ti is not a problem.
What I do find bothersome is that, when not high speed dubbing, the video output shows the content being recorded. I don't want to watch what I'm dubbing. I should be able to watch something else. It's as if they bolted a DVD recorder onto an HDD and just plugged the HDD output into the DVD input. They could have spent a little engineering effort and wrote some firmware to perform a more intelligent dubbing method that was always high speed and doesn't require use of the video circuit.
They also could have spent a little money on the on-screen graphics. The graphics are pretty minimal, but they're easy to view and to understand, so this is a minor gripe on my part.
Anyway, I really do like the unit and what it does. It's the only model that combines a DVD writer & HDD and it performs what it claims.

I was disappointed in the performance of this unit

I bought the unit so I could use it as a second tuner for my Samsung HDTV. However, the Magnavox recorder wasn't able to capture all the clear QAM channels that my Samsung TV identified. The Magnavox unit made good recordings from DTV channels, however, it was slow. Also, the recordings that were made when I connected my HD video camera to the BNC video input came out very poor quality.

Review 17 for Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, 320GB
On 4/16 my cable company-Comcast-went to all digital broadcasting. All the old VCR's in the house were suddenly obsolete (for time shifting). I ordered the Magnavox thinking it would act as a DVR. Turns out Comcast wont allow any DVR except their own for timed recording. But I thought outside the box and decided to keep the "Maggie", since I have over 40 old VCR recordings of movies and musicals that are deteriorating. Now I can record them to DVD by simply feeding a VCR into a line input of the Magnavox. Of course I can still record off of TV even tho I am now a "slave" to the cable box, as long as I preset the Channel on the Comcast box and keep The Magnavox set on channel 3.

Add a simple indoor antenna and get local channels the Mag can tune by itself. Many people get more than 20 local OTA channels, all digital/HD quality. I get 20+ channels and I live 40-50 miles between two large cities, and ALL my timer recordings are from the local network channels, ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC.

So far this product is excellent. Easy to set up and run. I am very happy with it. Thinking of getting another one to have as a back up. Is the only thing I have been able to find that I am able to record on with just having an antenna. Very easy to use.

My TV gets channels clearly. This thing does not. I have an older model of this DVR. I now use it for surveilance cameras. It has a substandard tuner too. I have a Channel Master DVR with problems of its own, but it at least has a real good tuner, so I'd rather put up with it than this thing.
I couldn't find a way to control the aspect ratio on playback. Stuff not in HD was stretched.
The DVD recorded one session, after I deleted it, it wouldn't accept the disc any more. I took it back to the store.
