I bought the first version of this item years ago when it first came out. It worked great then and this (third replacement) works great now. They have a limited lifetime due to the non-replaceable battery, but they do the job. I use it when fishing from my canoe to determine depth.
It can be used when ice fishing to determine depth through the ice if you first make a small puddle on the ice for the unit to float in. It works in salt water too. I don't rely on it to show me any fish.
I'm sure they could make it so the battery was replaceable. But then they would sell as many.
