This device will take a little bit of time to set up, especially if you want to use the RAID 1 option. It needs to reformat both drives if you choose RAID 1, and the reformat can take a few hours. Be prepared to start the reformat then walk away (or leave it overnight).
I had to choose the included WD back-up softare because I couldn't set up an auto backup from Windows 7 to the NAS since I only have Windows 7 Home Premium. Apparently you have to have Professional or Ultimate to have the option of a network-accessed backup location. (I'm not a savvy computer techie, so I don't know if there is a work-around for this.) But, having said that, the WD software worked just fine and I completely backed up a home-business laptop in about 3 to 4 hours. Now that it has been backed up, any changes to files or new added files are backed up automatically.
One quirky thing that happened was, I have a little-used Windows 7 desktop that I recently bought, and it has a 1TB hard drive. So I thought I would schedule the WD Live Duo for a back-up of its own onto this hard drive. Well, the PC was not password protected, and when I tried to point the WD drive to the PC hard drive, it kept asking for a password and would never let me continue. I then set up a password on the PC, and all was well again. (I only intended for this to be an occasional secondary backup in case for some reason I lost the WD all together -- which is not very likely with the RAID 1 configuration.)
I haven't set up the remote access options yet, so I can't speak about those. I can confirm that there is an Android app available for this. The manuals say there is also an Apple app but I can't confirm that.
I purchased this item as a network storage device, and don't intend to use the media-streaming capability or the personal cloud capability, but its nice to know I can if I want to.
Overall, I think the product is worth what I spent on it. I am a bit leery that it doesn't have its own cooling fan, and I am thinking about putting it on a laptop cooling pad just to be sure there is sufficient air flow. But, the fact that it has 2 hard drives is very attractive and for the price it can't be beat.

So good so far...all the apps work without any problem and are easy to set up. I also use this as a music server that I can access while away on business rather than having to load up my iPhone or laptop with music. I also have all of my movies and pictures on there as well. Great to keep a little one happy.
