Review 1 for Safety 1st - Guide 65 Sport Convertible Car Seat, Athens

Very pleasantly surprised

I suddenly found myself needing to buy a new convertible carseat for my toddler, as our Evenflo Triumph LX only rear faces to 35 lbs and my daughter (2 1/2) is 35 lbs, and I am not ready to turn her forward facing for safety reasons. But I could not afford $170-$300 for a carseat that would fit her rear facing. I bought this one and am just amazed. First, according to the manual, they are safe to ride in it rear facing until the top of their head reaches the top of the head rest (which moves up), not with an inch in between as many carseats are...which means my 36" two year old has a lot more room to grow before turning forward facing. It RF to 40 lbs, and even though it isn't rated for this height (only to 40 inches), my 39 lb, 42 inch almost-five-year old fit in it rear facing with his head just even with the top of the headrest. I was also surprised at how comfortable the carseat seemed...side impact head protection and EPS foam...Not hard as a brick like the Scenera. And lastly, they really are not lying when they say it is a compact carseat. Though my daughter had plenty of room in it, it looked tiny compared to our Evenflo Triumph. Sitting in one of the captains' chairs of our Grand Caravan minivan, i could put both arm rests down on either side without it touching them, and with the front seat in a normal position I could easily get between the back of her carseat and the front seat...they weren't even close to touching as with many other rear facing seats. The box shows pictures of these seats three-across in the back of a standard sized car, and I believe it.This carseat didn't take up much more room than our son's Evenflo Big Kid Sport High back booster. I am very impressed.

I purchased this for my 6 mo. old son who had outgrown his infant seat. I was looking for a seat that would not take up a great deal of space in the back seat but without compromising on safety. This is a perfect seat. I am continuing to use it as a rear facing seat and it takes no more space than his infant seat. I have a Honda Accord with this seat in the rear middle, I am still able to accommodate two basic travel booster seats when my niece and nephew are running about with me.
I had intended to purchase a comparable seat in the Eddie Bauer line; however, this seat is primarily identical to it. The only exception is a small pad in the other brand. The price on this one however is substantially less so I could not see paying a higher price for the same style seat.
Pros:
*The additional head support.
*Comfort- it is very well padded/cushioned under baby's bottom and back.
*Doesn't take up a lot of room...can still accommodate 2 passengers in the back seat with the seat
*Adjustable harness, buckle, and head support to grow with child
Cons:
*Some difficulty bracing the seat in the reclined position for babies under 20 lbs. (This could be unique to my make of car...the seat has to be in the middle due to side impact air bags).
The biggest plus is my son loves it!!

My husband originally bought a car seat from another baby retail store as a last-minute purchase since he had to pick up our daughter from day care. After one use, that car seat quickly was returned because it basically was a cover over the hard styro-foam base with no head support at all. I felt sorry my kid even had to use it. Finally after reading lots of reviews for this car seat, I ordered it online. To my surprise, for only $10 more, this one makes a perfect 2nd car seat. It's compact, has nice head support and cushioning. While it it cumbersome, like others have said, to adjust the straps, it's tolerable for the price. We will be keeping this one.

Looks and feels great. My twins seem to love sitting in them so far. Fit great in my car, I was worried I wouldn't have enough room, but I did!....only down side I could NOT figure out how to rear face them!!! :( forward facing was easy though! :)

Great for our Prius or any small car, only wished it tilt back a little ( like our bigger carseat) so when our son falls asleep his head doesn't fall forward. Overall I would recommend it.

Great Seat and Great price

After doing research and reasing lots of great reviews I decided to purchase this car seat for my 7 month old son. Although he had not yet outgrown his infant carrier (he's only 15 lbs), I had to purchase a new car seat due to a car accident and it didn't make sense to purchase another carrier if he would be outgrowing it soon. Installing this seat was a breeze. The seat is well padded and seems super comfy. The padded headrest can be adjusted to your child height. He loves it. The only complaint I have is loosening the harness is a little tough sometimes. The seat fits in a smaller car wonderfully and still leaves room for other passangers in the back seat. I love that I can use this seat rear facing to 40 lbs and forward facing to 65 lbs. Overall I and extremely satisfied with this car seat and would definitely reccommed it.

MY BABY IS 9 1/2 months old! use this for main vehicle, love it. fits in my 4 door car awesomely with room to put another carseat on each side. baby loves it and instead of head falling forward when sleeping it just rests sideways on the head support. easy to install, easy to move headrest. Plenty of room for her to grow!

I love the Safety 1st car seats. We bought one for me daughter when she outgrew her infant seat at around 11 months. My six month old son outgrew the infant seat very early( he is a chunker!). I ordered the Air Protect seat from Safety 1st and returned it. It was huge and very bulky. This seat is perfect. It is very comfy, works great rear facing and looks like it will be great forward facing. My son fits in it perfectly. The rep I spoke to at Safety 1st customer service said this seat is great for compact vehicles. I have a full size Suburban and it works great for my car, but I can see that it would fit nicely in a smaller car too. Some other seats are so bulky. I am very pleased with this seat and would recommend it to anyone!

We got this car seat for my husbands car for my son who is 50lbs and 43 inches tall. We want to keep him in the 5 point harness as long as possible and we figured he would still have some room to grow in this car seat and then we could use it for my daughter rear facing as she is 1 and 25lbs and this car seat goes up to 40lbs rear facing. They say this car seat is for children up to 52 inches but I don't see how that's possible as much son just fits perfectly in this seat with a tiny bit more room to grow and he is only 43 inches.
When my son first used the seat the straps were very hard to tighten but that was because my husband put the strap for adjusting the harness underneath the strap that goes around the legs so it wasn't able to tighten correctly. But that was no fault of the car seat. We used it rear facing for my daughter for couple days and it worked just fine after the straps were fixed. In the end I did return it and get the Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat which seems to work a lot better and had a lot more room for my son, and also goes up to 54 inches instead of 52 inches.

Didn't install well in our car

I purchased this seat with the intent to be an inexpensive, lightweight second seat we would occasionally use to transport our child in our secondary car, which has a small back seat. I received recommendations for this seat, and was hopeful it would serve this purpose.
I was initially disappointed after reading the manual and finding out that the less reclined option for rear facing installation is only usable if your child has good head/neck control AND weighs 22 lbs or less. I have an older baby who is very light for his height, and he will for sure outgrow his infant seat by height before he would reach this 22 lb limit required for the more upright install position. Some other seat manufacturers will allow for use of the less reclined option as long as a baby is older and has good head/neck control, without imposing a weight limit. I am not sure why the Guide 65 has this limit.
I was also disappointed that the seat was not as compact front-to-back as I would have hoped. Installation at either level of recline would still require us to put the front seats further forward than we would like. Note that our secondary car has a very small back seat, so we are very limited as to what will fit in our car. The Guide 65 might be a compact convertible car seat, but it just wasn't compact enough for our car.
Finally, we just could not achieve a good LATCH install in our back seat. Even after using 3+ towels to achieve proper recline, and with the LATCH belt tightened as far as it would go, it still was very loose and could easily be pulled quite a bit side to side on the belt path. This was the final confirmation that this seat was not for us, so it went back to the store.
I ended up purchasing another seat of a different brand - though not as cheap or lightweight - that achieved a tight install in our car without requiring towels, and was more compact front to back than our infant seat. I am sure the Guide 65 is a good option for some, but it just didn't work for us.

Great forward facing, horrible rear facing

We used this car seat once for our nephew in the forward facing position and it seemed great. However, we just installed in for our 10 month old in the rear facing position and we cannot get it tight enough, no matter what we do. It moves easily and tips side to side, I don't feel good about using it rear facing at all. Even those certified in installing car seats couldn't get it to tighten enough! We will keep it as a spare for forward facing, but not rear.

Straps twist too easily

The first 3 months or so this was a great seat.....then the straps got twisted and will not stay untwisted at the clip part....I am a carseat safety guru so for me this is unacceptable and I have since purchased a britax. I recommended this seat as "an inexpensive way to RF to 40 lbs" and for that it is great, installs very easily.....the holes for the buckle part just need to be a tiny bit wider and then the straps would not twist and this seat would be wonderful.
