Great investment. So much better than paper filters. My water looked like pea soup when I turned the pump on. Within the first 6 hr cycle it was clear. The only downfall is it does not come with the sand and doesn't say that on the box. Also, I could not find the sand at my local Walmart so I had to go to another store to get it.

We purchased this sand filter after many years of dealing with those filters that are for the Intex filter system that comes with the pools. Already it has saved both time and money. We did have to adjust the input for the pool itself so that the fitting would slide through but that was simple. After using it to open the "green" pool this year, it is almost clear already within a week. Back-washing is great but I do recommend getting a hose to attach so that you don't flood the area around the pump. GREAT FILTER for these types of pools!

I have been using the Intex Krystal Clear 1600 Sand Filter for a week now and just love the job it is doing. We have been having weather in the 90's and the kids in the pool constantly. The filter is doing it's job without a hitch. It was easy to assemble. I am using it in a 12 x 20 x 48 pool and I highly recommend this product.

We should have done this years ago!! After spending hundreds on the paper cartridges, we invested in this sand filter and pump. Our pool is sparkling clean and we are thrilled! This did not, however, fit immediately onto the 18' Intex above ground pool we have. It required an adapter, not included, and some serious manhandling. The adapter was found at a somewhat local pool supply store. Overall, am thrilled with the purchase!

Great replacement for pool pump

My original pump started to fail the second year and could not keep enough flow for the saltwater system to stay on. I also got tired of changing the filter every couple of days as it tried to clean up the pollen in the water.
I have the 20x4 round pool and it has been working great with it. Backwashing and rinsing the filter every couple of days is a quick process so much better than buying new filters. Having put this pump in place my water was crystal clear within a week.
My only design complaint is that there is no air release valve in the clear lid over the waste basket like I had on my inground pool in our last house. The air does seem to finally get reduced down to a small bubble though so it is not an issue. When it starts to surge and draw more air I can tell some debree has made it through the in pool skimmer basket and is trapped against the outlet filter at the pool wall and needs to be detached and cleaned.
We had so much rain my pool started to overflow but with the 6-way valve it was easy to just turn it to watse and dump the excess water without disconnecting hoses.

Review 9 for Intex Krystal Clear 1,600 Gallon Sand Filter

This sand filter and pump works great!

We set up our 22' round Intex pool last summer with the cartridge type filter and pump assembly that came with the pool. I felt right from the beginning that the unit that came with the pool was just adequate at best. I would have to wash the cartridge filters at least 3-4 times a week, but it did the job, barely.
Upon opening our pool this spring, we had an algae growth issue to deal with. After cleaning the cartridge type filters multiple times while vacuuming the pool, I switched to the sand filter so that we had the option of vacuuming the pool to waste. It took a thorough chlorine shocking and algaecide, along with brushing and vacuuming the pool several times, over the course of which I backwashed the sand filter about a dozen times, but within a week I have the pool back to looking brand new. The water is getting clearer and clearer every day.
After getting the pool back to the way it should be, I added an Intex saltwater chlorine generator. The water tests out perfect now after a little chemical adjustment to correct the total alkalinity and PH. I look forward to the rest of this summer without having to wash or replace cartridge type filters. When the water flow gets low, I can just backwash the sand, then rinse it, top the pool water back up with the garden hose, and I'm set to go until the flow drops off again. The filter has a pressure gauge you can monitor for when to backwash the filter, but the drop in water flow is your true indicator that the filter needs a backwash. In fact, a slightly dirty filter will actually clear more debris from the water, so don't backwash more frequently than needed or you will be compromising the water filtering capability of the sand.
Backwashing and rinsing are very easy. You just shut off the pump and then set the filter lever to the marked position for backwashing, then run the pump until the water coming from the waste hose is clear (this takes about a minute and a half). To rinse the sand back down in the filter, you once again shut the pump off, set the filter lever to rinse, and run the pump for about another minute. After that you set the lever back to the filter position and set the pump switch to the timed position. I currently have it running 12 hours, but I'm going to back it down to 8 this coming week and see how that works for us now that our algae problem is no more and I have the saltwater chlorine generator maintaining a free chlorine level of 3 ppm.
As previously mentioned, you will need to top the pool water back off, since the backwashing and rinsing does cause some water to leave the pool. My experience has been that running the garden hose for about 15 minutes brings my water back to the correct level. That will, of course, vary with your pool size and the water pressure in your area. To this point, all the backwashing and rinsing I did was prior to adding salt to the water for the saltwater chlorine generator. From this point on, I will be checking the salt concentration in the water and adding back more salt as needed whenever I lose water and have to add it after a filter backwash. It initially took 6 bags of salt (40 lbs each) to get the salt level correct, so I would imagine that 1 additional bag of salt will likely get me through the summer since I should only have to add perhaps several cups for each water top off. A 40 lb bag of salt is less than 6 dollars, so I consider this expense to be minimal.
Overall, I am very pleased with the operation of this sand filter and pump assembly. My only regret is that I wish I would have bought it, and the saltwater generator, last year when we got the pool. I could have saved myself a lot of time consuming maintenance and expensive pool chemicals. Going forward, I look forward to less work and expense to maintain a clean and sanitary pool for my family and friends to enjoy.
By the way, ordering online and then picking up the unit at a Walmart near me saved me nearly $65 over the in store price. If you are considering purchasing this filter unit, I would definitely suggest going that route.

I had the Cartridge filter that came with my pool and by the price of the filters you save a lot purchasing this sand filter any-day I also purchased a side wall vent to and when pollen and bugs are bad you put a ankle stocking in the deb re basket and keeps all these particles from flowing back into tour pool but over all it's the best no more money wasted.

Excellent value for the money

This is my initial review of this filter pump. Updates will follow.
Purchased online and had it shipped to the store. This was to replace the stock pump and cartridge filter that came with my Intex 15' metal frame pool. The stock unit worked fine if left running long enough but the filter cartridges were only good for 72 hours running time max and at ten bucks a pop, got to be expensive, and hard to find late in the season. This pump/filter unit is very competitively priced compared to similar units
This unit is a much stronger pump (1600gph vs 700gph) and is quite robustly built. Just about everything was included to fit -any- pool. Hooking it up to my Intex pool was a breeze. The instructions are very clear and easily understood if you aren't already familiar with this type of filter. For hook-up to non Intex pools you -might- have to buy one or two adapters to fit your pool, but several are included of the most common sizes.
The unit was well packaged and undamaged in shipping. All parts were separately packaged in the main box and clearly labeled. The only thing -not- included was the filter sand. You need 50-55lbs of the -right- sand. Loading it into the unit can be challenging because of the weight, but if instructions are followed it will go fine. Take your time here and do it right.
The unit has it's own plastic base, but it should be placed on a good firm surface rather than just sitting on the grass. I put mine on a raised platform made of 3/4 Plywood and 2x4s. The unit can be bolted down. The power cord is generous in length and includes a GFCI plug. Power consumption does not seem excessive. There is good suction at the inlet for a vacuum attachment
This filter is really meant for much larger pools than mine. My pool was quite green from the winter when I hooked it up. After about two days of running the water was almost clean again even with no chemicals added. Once the pool is properly treated I expect this unit will keep my water crystal clear with much less work on my part than the stock unit.
The pump has a timer on it, but it controls duration only, not start/stop times. If you set it to 6 hours and turn it on in timer mode it will run for 6 hours then shut off and restart at the same time the next day.
All in all, an easy upgrade to any pool using a cartridge filter.

Review 13 for Intex Krystal Clear 1,600 Gallon Sand Filter

Great filtering system!

After dealing with algae growth and debris collecting on the bottom of my pool (Intex, 15' x 4'), I decided to invest in a sand filter. I keep my pool up year round (covered during off-season), and I could not get the water to clear up or keep debris out of it. The filter (cartridge) and vacuum system that are included with this pool are inadequate unless the pool is emptied, cleaned, and refilled every "pool" season. I did have to invest in another vacuuming system (vacuum head, pole [the pole that comes with the pool is not universal as it does not fit most vacuum heads], and hose); however, it has made all the difference in the world when cleaning my pool. The debris (leaves, sand, bugs, algae) is easily removed using the new vacuuming system. I did have to vacuum the pool initially using gravity to remove the leaves as the leaves were stopping up the filter. For anyone who doesn't know how to use gravity, you simply attach one end of the hose to the vacuum head and put the other end on the ground. This will remove a lot of water, but it also removes leaves and other debris, thereby keeping the filter from stopping up. After the initial gravity vacuum, I attached the hose end to the inlet in my pool and vacuumed up the remaining debris. This system keeps a majority of the algae and sand particles from reentering the pool. The net system only picks up larger debris while allowing fine particles to escape back into the water. It is easy to install and works well with my Intex Salt Water Filter. Also, the sand filter holds 55 lbs. of sand. I would highly recommend the Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter (I have the 1600 gallon model) to anyone who does not empty their pool. It is well worth the money!

Easy to set up. You will need about 50 pounds of pool sand, be sure you are able to handle it without hurting yourself. You can vacuum with this pump, which is better than using the garden hose vacuum that came with the Intex pool. Buying the vacuum, vacuum hose and backwash hose can cost as much as the pump. They aren't necessary, but nice to have. It works great on a 15 foot round pool and would probably due just as well on a larger diameter pool.

I just got this and is so worth it. But seen where someone said they ran it 24/7 you are only to run it 12 hours. it saids that in the book. And you really only have to run it 1 to 2 hours at a time. It was easy to put together. My only complait was the 2 bolts were missing and one of the connections to the pool is no good and leaks. And the murky water is just lack of chlorine. We keep it floating 24/7 and that keeps it clear.
