Brother makes great machines. This machine is perfect for a beginner user. It does exactly whats needed and it does it well. It's not stressful to thread. It's also equipped with all of the feet that are necessary to get started. This is a great first serger. It's also light weight and easy to move around.

Great deal for the price, 10/25/2009
By Sweetpea10
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I have just recently purchased this serger. I have not had the chance to do very much yet, but am looking forward to it. I had a White Serger before that was the pits. This Brother has a fabulous threading system. I could rethread and go on using it instead of fighting to get it to thread. Wal Mart was very fast and gave excellent service in getting the serger to me. The price was great and service too. I hope in the long run Brother did as good a job on the serger.

Brother 1034D Serger, 10/21/2009
By SherriFL, Florida
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I lost my beloved Babylock serger in a fire and had to replace it. After hours of research I decided to go with the Brother 1034D. I took it out of the book and tried it. It serged beautifully. I then rethreaded it with cone thread and made a skirt for my daughter. It worked the first time! No trouble and no rethreading! This is a great serger and I love it. I am VERY happy with my purchase.

Nice serger, 10/04/2009
By SouthBeachDieter, Grand Island, NE
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This is a good machine. I got it threaded right on the third try. From what I hear from other serger users, threading a machine is very difficult. The different colored thread tension dials are helpful in that they are different colors. I haven't sewn alot with this machine yet, but I have lots of patterns I intend to make. The instruction book is a bit technical, but the DVD's that came with it were helpful.

This is a great serger. Wonderful stiches and so easy to thread. I can't say enough about this serger. I purchase my first one and loved it so much that I purchased a second one. I use both in my pet bedding and clothing business. It's not a complicated machine to learn or sew with.

Review 31 for Brother Serger Lay-in Thread Machine

Great Sturdy Product, 09/13/2009
By Shell222, Buffalo, NY
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

This is one of the best machines I have ever used. It is sturdy, and handles well and is easy to sew with. This won't make you a better sewer, but it does make sewing sooo much easier. You still need a regular sewing machine, but If you buy one of these you will use both machines when doing your next project. I was and still am a little intimidated by the nature of this machine but that isn't enough to stop my from using it and trying new things. I use it for draperies, home decor, and kids clothing and costumes. Will highly recommend this to anyone who pulls out the sewing machine to make beautiful creations for her home and family. I am one of those people who will sew to get what I want without the high retail cost of a custom drape or dress or whatever. Good Luck.

Easy and reasonable, 09/12/2009
By LoveTulip, Portland, OR
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

Even though I'm a very beginner for serger, after seeing CD-rom's and manuals, I was able to figure how to use it. My few complain is that there is no handle on the machine and that explanation about how you deal with the start and end chain was not enough.
Over all, it was a very god price at Walmart and it is easy to use. I'm using it very often. I love it!

Review 33 for Brother Serger Lay-in Thread Machine

AWESOME, EASY, OUTSTANDING, 09/12/2009
By TailoringandUpholstering, San Diego, CA
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

Im a new student tailor, but an older furniture upholstering technician. I have used industrialized machines, european, asian, american. For the projects that I have been doing with furniture upholstering and now tailor I am happy to recommed with flying colors the BROTHER Surger.

This machine's overall quality deserves 5 stars across the board. I gave it 4 stars on the durability aspect due in part for only minor physical strengths. They are the thread tower - Very Flimsy, and the pullout free arm converter. Very plastic, very flimsy. Otherwise I can't say enought AWESOME points on the overall machine.

Very stable, at high speeds, EASY, EASY, EASY threading. Worked out of the box and purposely took ot the treads from the guids to rethread, and you can't go wrong. First time rethreading and it worked as expected.

Comes with CD's (2) of them. One is about the machine and the other about the versatility of stiching types. This machine can replace a reqular sewing machine for most home projects.

Cord is long enough so that it does not need an extension cord. Cutting blades, are very sharp, stiching type such as rolled hems are easily done on the fly without having to switch out throat plates, or accessory foot. Uses regular home sewing machine needles. Comes with multiple extra feet, is able to stich about 22 different kind of variable stiches including flat lock.

Again just because a machine is produced in another country and sold for more does not mean that it is any better. If you are into starting and completing your projects with minimal technical machine trouble purchase this machine.

I have now had this machine for about 3 months, and have sewn on it without any troubles for about 350 hours total usage time. Not a click, not a misalignment, not any type of trouble.

TIP: Purchase the best thread and it won't snap your line. Most of the time its not the machine it is the quality of the thread.

Okay happy sewing I hope this review helped...!

Brother Serger Lay-in Thread Machine, 1034D, 09/08/2009
By SergingSuzie, Villa Hills, KY
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I bought this product and have used it only a few hours -- in that time I've had to both re-thread the machine and replace a broken needle -- Each time I simply referred to the manual. It was a fairly easy task to do both! And, that says a lot about this serger. It runs smoothly, is fairly light weight and fairly easy to re-thread and re-needle. I'd buy it again.

A MUST HAVE FOR PROFESSIONAL RESULTS, 09/02/2009
By AspiringDesigner, Lawrence, MA
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I LOVE THIS OVERLOCK. I just opened it, and it was all set up and ready to go, but of course I wanted to learn how to thread it. The instruction booklet is extremely easy to read, it has clear, neat pictures for everything. On top of that, after you look at the instructions there are directions in the machine itself so if you forget how to thread it the instructions are right there. Also on the instructions book, they have pictures on how the stitch should look, and what it may look if the tensions is wrong, and it gives exact instructions on how to fix it. After I thread it myself, thanks to the book I saw that 2 of the threads needed more tension. Since I'm a beginner and still learning I wouldn't know it was wrong unless I saw the pictures. It's nice, simple and white so is very gender friendly; it also has suction feet so it doesn't move around on slippery surfaces. I admit I still didn't use all of the feet and done all the different kinds of stitching, but the regular overlock stick looked exactly like the one from my mother's industrial machine. I did a lot of research on machine both straight stitch and overlocks, and as far as overlocks goes, this is the best one I found in value, looks, and results. Whether you are are a beginner like me or someone who just wants more professional looking results on their projects, you should get this machine!

This is my first serger and the thought of rethreading it was pretty scary. I decided to watch the instructional video, which went through the process step by step, and discovered that it is actually pretty simple. I can't compare it to any other serger, but I am very happy with it so far.
