I ordered the Brother 1034D online on a Tuesday and it was at my door on Wednesday. I did not open it until Christmas. The thread spools had come off and were in a mess so I was forced to learn to thread the machine before I ever used it. I have been practicing serging on infant gowns and have used up a lot of almost empty spools of thread. The machine is not hard to thread but the practice has helped. It makes a nice stitch, is not loud, and is easy to use. I recommend this machine to a first time Serger operator.

I was intimidated with the thought of buying a Serger. I was afraid that I would not be able to thread it, figure out all the things it could do, would not use it enough to make it worthwhile, etc...I spent many weeks looking at Sergers online and even went to several sewing stores to compare different brands and styles. My son was buying this Serger as a Christmas gift for me so I was not too confined by price.

However, I kept coming back to this Brother 1034D. Several years ago I bought an inexpensive ($80) Brother sewing machine from Wal-Mart and have been very happy with it. It is user friendly and has not given me an ounce of trouble. Although I do not sew everyday, once I start sewing I usually do so everyday for several weeks at a time so my Brother machine has seen several good "workouts". Also, it is simple enough to use so my 10 year old daughter has not had a problem hopping on it and sewing something.

This is my first Serger ever. This is a great machine that I pulled out of the box and had working in minutes. Mine actually came pre-threaded but some of the thread spools had slipped off and were all tangled when I took it out of the box so I immediately had to re-thread it. It is VERY easy to thread following the directions that are right on the machine. It came with a few different feet and some nice accessories.

For the money, I don't think you can beat this Serger. It is a great machine to start with if you are at all unsure of your abilities in handling a Serger. I LOVE IT.

My serger stopped working in the middle of a Christmas project for my 3 granddaughters. It was an older machine and had had problems in the past so it wasn't a surprise. It was just inconvenient. I went on line and looked at serveral different sergers and shopping sites. This serger was rated very well and seemed to fit what I was looking for. It arrived in a timely manner. It is easy to thread and has worked great on different thickness of fabric.

I bought this for my wife and she is providing the input for the review. She is thrilled by the ease of threading the machine, tension adjustments, and overall use. She said that one of these days, she will actually look at the CD's provided to see what else the machine can do. She immediately sewed a nightgown and then proceeded to make curtains and pillows in the first 2 weeks she had the machine. She loves the fact that the machine uses standard sewing needles and regular spools of thread. In addition, the trimming tray (that captures all of the cuttings) is a very nice feature. She does recommend using a scrap piece of material to ensure thread tension(s) are correct before actually sewing a project. She did confirm that setting the tension a little tighter on the left needle does indeed sew a nice gather stitch as stated in the users manual. Overall she is very pleased with the price and performance of this machine.

This is my first serger to ever use. I have a very basic Brother sewing machine that has been wonderful so I decided to stick with Brother products. After seeing all of the wonderful reviews here on this product, I jumped in. It sat in the box for about a week since I didn't really have a place to put it (and honestly I was a bit intimidated). I finally got it out and began playing with basic serging and the gathering foot using the thread that came preloaded. I played so much that one of the spools actually ran out!! So I HAD to learn to thread it. After watching the included CDs and looking over the manual, I did it! I've had it for about 2 weeks now and have rethreaded 4 or 5 times (to change colors) and can now do it without looking at the manual! I love the gathering foot and capabilities as it saves me SOOO much time when sewing clothing for my daughter. The rolled edge hem is also a quick and beautiful way to finish edges of ruffles! I am so happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone! I've included a pic of a ruffle on jeans that was finished on the bottom with a rolled edge hem and gathered with my serger.

I did quite a bit of research before purchasing my 1st surger... I have dabbled in sewing and used various sewing machines over the years since my childhood... functional, but far from expert. I wanted a surger to make bandanas for my grooming business, but did not want to spend a lot of money and time learning how to use it. I was thrilled with the results and the quality of the stitching. The price was lower than any I found, and it's very easy to use. I read that many sergers are tricky to thread. Not this one. I read the instructions and followed the diagrams... I am now making professional quality bandanas in no time at all, and I feel much more confident.

I have been sewing for 42 years and have been scared to death to try serging. Finally gave in and bought this machine which my husband found for me. Fairly easy to thread, just follow the diagrams. I messed up the tension right off the bat, but didn't have too much trouble getting it back in balance. It is really fun to use and turns out a great finished seam. Why did I not get this years ago?

I just started to get back into sewing and needed a serger for some new projects I was starting. This is a great value and does exactly what it says. The instructions aren't the best but I had no problem threading the machine at all. Definitely a great serger for a beginner.

This machine came with instructional CDs that could only be played on a computer. Walmarts website does not say that--it says "...instructional VIDEO TAPE included." So you cannot watch it on your DVD player. I had to watch the CDs on my computer at work then come home and try to thread it. The bottom loopers are constantly coming unthreaded which is a real pain. But when it works it works fine. I haven't gotten too much use out of it because I'm constantly rethreading the machine...but that may be human error. The instructional video is pretty outdated (host, music, clothing), not high tech at all and shows a DIFFERENT but compatable machine. Overall, I think its a great value and a fun product.

Threading was simple which was better than my expectation. CDs required to play using computer was not good design. I had problems threading it at first but after a few tries it was my misunderstanding. Still early to give it a full review but overall it met my expectation. For the price, I think it is a good buy.

I have never owned or operated a serger before and I was scared to even un-pack it when it arrived especially after reading some reviews here regarding the difficulty in threading, etc. I watched the two DVD's, read the manual and unpacked the machine. I sewed some trial samples with the thread that was pre-threaded onto the machine, then re-threaded it with my own thread with no problems at all! I made a pair of pants within the first day and can't wait to make more things! I can't believe I went this long without a serger!

I have only owned this serger a few weeks, but I love it. I have not had a chance to try all the features, but what I have done with it has exceeded my expectations. This machine stitched everything from the sheerest fabric, to 3 layers of heavy denim. I even threaded it and had no problem on the second try. The only thing I would have prefered was a DVD instead of a CD for instructions. This is my first serger so I have nothing to compare it to, but I am very pleased.

I love this machine. I don't know why I never bought it before. All those long projects now are done in less time.
This is my first time using a serger and at first when I looked at it, I thought I could never operate this, let alone thread all the different threads! But, I took my time and listened to the CD-ROM that is included and it help me alot. I am not overwhelmed anymore.

I bought a Singer that malfunctioned only 12 days after I had it. Took it back and decided to look for another brand. Bought the Brother and it is so much more user friendly - much easier to thread, has more options included, works just great. Never had a serger before, and enjoying it greatly.
