Great camera. Has a lot of features that makes it really nice for taking pictures for any occasion. I use it frequently for everything from everyday pictures to special occasions. Picture quality is great.
The "CONS" I have for this camera is: 1. You can't make any movement of the camera when zooming. BUT this is something that was stated in other reviews, I just didn't realize how bad it really was. When zooming you really need to use a tri-pod. 2. Not enough options on the "edit" with the software. Paying this much for a camera it would be nice to have a lot more options for editing pictures. 3. Little expensive

Review 4 for Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video
I bought this camera to take photos of my two young children. My previous Samsung was terrible in low light or action conditions. This Powershot is perfect for what I need. So far, I couldn't be happier with my results. It takes excellent portrait style pictures and I never miss a shot in low light. I've only used the auto function and haven't really gotten into the details of what this camera can do. It's unfortunate the owner's manual is on disc. It would be much easier to have an actual book to read. I would highly recommend this camera.

Review 5 for Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video
The SX40 replaced a 7 year older Canon. This new model has fantastic pictures in the auto mode, and I have not yet learned to use other settings. Zoom is easy and takes very clear pictures, however is seems to take several seconds to adjust on the LCD screen. Software is easy to use on the computer and you have online options if you care to use them. Would highly reccomed this camera.

I had my camera about 5 months, and loved it. Took great pictures. Then I had to send it in cause the card reader quit working. Under warranty so it didn't cost me anything. But gone almost 3 weeks to get it fixed. Worked great when I got it back. Then just before the warranty is up, the screen started blacking out and getting a lot of blurred pictures. So, once again sent it in. waited over 2 weeks and heard nothing, they are supposed to let me know what needs to be done, and estimate on time. When I called in, they said oh oops, someone was supposed to call you a week ago to get picture samples. I had already emailed them in. Guess they got lost, so once again sent more pics. Then another few days later they decide they can't figure it out, so they send it back as is! Want to do a troubleshoot over the phone with me having the camera. When I got it, I took a few pics to check it out. Blacked out within a few minutes. So I called back, they say send it back and we will check again!! So more time goes by, and then they say they will replace it. With not a new camera, a used refurbished one. Just got nothing but runaround and treated very rudely, they ask if I know the camera has a power saving feature that shuts off the screen after a minute? Had it for a year, and I guess I didn't know that... Love the camera, when it works, but the customer service is BAD!!!

Review 7 for Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video
The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video is typical Canon well built and thought out package. I have used Powershot cameras for years and am rarely disappointed. The camera shoots well in low light situations, and with 12MP resolution, keeps the picture focused. It offers a range of shooting senarios, and includes rapid fire photos for action shots. Controls are well thought out and placed in convenient places. The HD video is controled from a single button on back that has a red dot. The 35x optical zoom is only surpassed by the newer SX50 HD, which also features WIFI. The 2.7 LCD screen is bright and crip and easy to see. It folds out for self portrait veiwing, or folds down on the back. A single button control can switch to a veiwfinder, or simply fold the LCD down. The SX40 has everything I was looking for in a digital camera, at an affordable price.

I absolutely love this camera. It is so easy to use and the zoom is amazing. Pictures are so clear. It is a lot of fun using the filter effects. Even if you aren't technically competent, the auto feature will do all the work for you--all you have to do is point and shoot!

As I reported in an eariler review on 12-16-2012 this is a very good camera and would recmmend it to anyone. I just want to make a correction that I said in my eariler review about the movies can't play back on the camera display, it Does playback. As I said eariler I am still exploring all that this camera as to offer.

Review 11 for Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video
Bought this for an early Christmas present for my daughter (age 17). We were heading to Ireland and needed a good reliable camera. We had no problems with the camera, she took over 900 pictures on this card. Granted, she wasn't sure how to use all the settings, but did use the black and white feature. The battery lasted the whole day. We haven't printed the pictures yet, but they look great on the computer. I think it was a great deal. I read a lot of bad reviews, but it's always possible to get a bad one out of the bunch, this camera worked great. (we have only had it for about 2 weeks now) It is easy to use if you don't know what your doing, but there seem to be many other settings for those out there who want it. I think its a great in between camera, as I'm not sure my daughter will get into taken many pictures, I didn't want to spend a ton, but didn't want a cheap camera either.

Review 13 for Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video
I haven't used the camera much due to I ALWAYS forget to bring it w/ me! But what I have used of it I like. The only thing I don't like is the that the flash doesn't pop up automatically-you have to put it up and then the camera will use it if needed. I don't know that I would pay full price but I bought it right after Thanksgiving on sale so I think I got a decent deal.

Review 14 for Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video
I purchase this camera going on reviews of others and they were right. This camera has great zoom, takes great pictures and I have taken a few movies. The only thing that I wish that this camera could do is to play back the movies on the camera screen (you have to down load to a computor to view). I have only had this camera a few weeks and have not tyied out everything this camera has to offer, but so far I am very pleased with this camera and looking forward to many years of use.

Review 16 for Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35X Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, HD Video
I needed a new camera to record violin and piano performances for my son. According to several articles Canon SX40 appeared to have better stereo sound quality, so that's why I purchased one. The sound quality indeed is pretty good and the pictures I've taken are much more colorful than my old cameras'. Its cheaper price is an added benefit. I noticed that the movies it took is in .MOV format so it will use about three time of storage space than .MP4 format other brand(s) might use at the same recording quality. Luckily, I purchased a 32 GB SDHC so it's not a problem for me. The 8 GB class 4 memory came with the purchase probably does not have enough capacity and might not be powerful enough to record 1080P.

My first camera, 30 years ago, was a Canon Sure Shot, and I had not met its equal in a digital until using an Olympus 10 years ago that I just plain wore out. In the past two years, I've purchased a Canon and an Olympus, each for about $200 on sale, point and shoot with good reviewst, and I was found them both disappointing. The colors were not all that great, the zoom made the photos fuzzy, and the batteries didn't last long. What I wanted in a camera, this camera has provided:
True colors: love, love, love the lens on this camera! The colors are clear, crisp, true to life, indoors and outdoors, wildlife, scenic views, skin tones.
Zoom that doesn't distort/create noise: This was fun to use! I shot bird photos, and it looked like the birds were sitting right in front of me. No details were lost, color and clarity remained fantastic even zoomed all the way out (optical zoom only).
Good battery life: Several hundred shots and three hours later, the battery had plenty of life left to it. Next day, without recharging, took many more and still the battery is going strong. It's too soon to know just how long it will last, but so far, I'm impressed.
Easy to hold: So many cameras are small now, and this fits my hands well. It has a nice shape to it, making it easy to hold securely.
Strap (neck strap comes with it): Nice strap, and that matters because my first camera broke only because I dropped it, and most cameras bought in this family have come without any strap at all.
Ability to override auto settings: Though I haven't tried this much yet, I have the option to set this to manual. I can even save my favorite manual settings. This is the one area I need to work at a bit; the menu is just a bit more complicated than I'd like for it to be, and there is no printed user guide. It should be noted that I had not read the user guide before using this camera other than to read the cautions and stuff you need to know to get it going (charging and using the battery, what size card and where to put it, etc).
Macro setting: I found it once, haven't found it again, need to learn where it is. The photos I took using it were excellent. See above--I just need to learn my way around the menu better.
Viewfinder: I like using a viewfinder, and most point and shoots don't have them. I like this a lot! It will save using the LCD screen all the time, and I enjoy composing a photo.
LCD screen: Very nice. It can be closed so that screen is protected (I do this while using the viewfinder and when not using the camera). When open, it can be set at various angles, which I suspect I'll use a lot, especially when getting photos at school plays, in crowds, and wherever it helps to hold the camera at an odd angle to get the shot.
The only con I would mention is the lack of user guide. There is one, but it's not in print. I find the printed books that used to come with cameras to be helpful--tuck them in the camera bag for quick reference.
I do need a bag; none of mine are right for this. I am using a Sans Disk SDHC card that I got on sale. That's the brand I've used for years and never have had troulbe with, so I stuck with what I know and don't regret it. It worked beautifully in this camera.
There is the ability to add lenses and even an extra flash. Though I didn't set out to find a camera with these features, I was torn between this and a Sony that is similar. The Sony lacked these features, so I went for the one that had similar reviews, features, and price but gave me more options.

Bought this for my daughter after she took a photography class in high school. Its so nice I almost kept it for myself. About the closest you'll come to a DSLR without spending huge dollars. Has a high quality feel and takes really good pictures. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
