Did my research and im so happy i bought two of these heaters. One for front of my apt, one for the back, and turned my central heat system off. Both heaters warmed up my apt front to back, and shut off when reached desired temperature. My electricity bill was cut in half. I was amazed. The remote control was super convenient too. Unit is small, very easy to carry, safe to leave on while im not home. Shocking how a heater this size can heat up the whole apt, and my apt is not small. Its long and tall seelings.

Purchased a Lasko last year for use in my camper. It eliminated "cold spots". I then began using it in my basement in October 2012 and it has been running 24/7 ever since then. There is NO heat in the basement other than this heater. Energy efficient. I bought this second Lasko to put back in the camper. (Camper furnace runs every 10 minutes and is noisy.) This heater maintains an even heat and is quiet. I love it!

I have now purchased 2 of these plus was given the model without the remote... All three are no longer working. They overheated more than once. My son briefly brushed past and now has a nice little scar of three lines. I purchased these based on the ratings and safety features. It's supposed to be "Hot" but not actually burn. The scar says that isn't true. If you are looking for a cheap heater to use once in a while... this may work, but they are NOT built to last. Will not buy LASKO ever again.

We bought a couple of the smaller laskos one year ago and have been very pleased with them. No problem whatsoever. However, we wanted something to heat a larger area so I ordered one of these a couple of weeks ago. When I went to pay for it, it was only $29.00 on clearance at our store! Thanks Walmart! I went back a couple of days later and bought another one (last one that they had in stock).
Both have been working perfectly and put out lots of heat. We tripped a breaker once when both were on high at the same time, but when both are on low, there is no problem with that and there is still plenty of heat coming out. We have had no problem with the cords getting hot.
We have 4 lasko heaters now and have been very pleased with all of them. Also pleased to be burning a lot less oil than we used to which is the reason we bought them. With the kids at school all day and the husband at work, I'm able to heat only the room I'm using when I'm the only one at home.

heater does an great job warming up an area very quickly. low power setting won't trip circuit beakers in a room with lots of other elctronics. very light weight and portable. liked this heater so much I purchased a second one. had it for over three months with no problems at all.

HI I GOT THIS Lasko 5538 ceramic tower heater TO SEND HEAT INTO MY BATHROOM WHEN I SHOWER EACH DAY IN WINTER IT WORKS GREAT IN 5 MINUTES IT GOOD TO GO I PLACED IT JUST OUTSIDE THE DOOR FOR SAFETY AND TURN IT OFF WHEN DONE THIS WAS BETTER THEN SPENDING A LOT MORE MONEY FOR A CEILING HEATER/FAN INSTALLED IN BATHROOM. OVER ALL ITS A NICE HEATER.

Replaced a similiar heater with this one. The old one still worked but no longer oscillated. Use in our sun porch to keep the plants from freezing. Set on 60 and it comes on and goes off itself, keeps the warm room and saves my plants.

A heater that works - FINALLY!

It took a month of researching, purchasing, buying, trying and returning. I have a 25 x 12 family room that is at the far end of my rancher and it never got warm in the winter. I purchased one of those wood cabinet-type heaters (Life Smart) for 800 sf, and it never reached 68°, so it never turned off. Took it back and upgraded to the 1500 sf model - same results. For less than 1/3 the price of the Life Smart, I purchased this little guy (Lasko #5538) and it does the job! I turn it off when not in use but when I go to that room & turn it on, it gets warm quick and toasty within an hour. It reaches my desired temp and turns off & on as needed. If I want to use the room immediately, I just move it close and let the gentle fan blow on me until the room warms up. I can now set my heat pump to the mid-60's and still be warm in the room most used.

I love this heater. I got it because our heating in our house broke on a cold night and the heater i bought was on clearance only $29 each. I got two one for my room and one for my mothers. It didnt take long until our rooms were so cozy we forgot our heater was even broken. The remote is a little wonky but i love the heater itself.

I got this after our Bionaire micathermic heater started failing. The Lasko just wasn't able to get the entryway of our old, drafty house any warmer than 67 on its max setting. Now we just use it in the kid's bedroom and it seems to work much better. Makes really loud beeps with every button press, which is kind of annoying.

I love everything about this heater and plan to buy another one. Controls are in site as well as the handy remote. I first purchased a different brand heater but RETURNED IT cause I would have to get on my knees to read the controls or lift the heater.

Works well but shortcomings

The unit is a nice design except that the base is a bit smallish for thick carpet and could easily fall over with an unexpected bump by you or your pet. This is a particular concern since there is no tip switch to shut it off if it falls over while running. The cut-out style handle is flat, smooth, and slanted so you can't get a good grip and your hand wants to slide off. The remote has the same features as the main unit and it works well.
The fan is a pretty quiet hum and blows the heat sufficiently well into the room. The whole unit, except for the small black base, oscillates about 45 degrees and is smooth and quiet. The heat from the unit is nice and warm. According to my amp meter, it draws about 10 - 10.5 amps on high and about 6 amps on low.
The automatic temp control (thermostat) works well except that it only works on the Hi setting (10.5 amps). If your 15 amp circuit breaker has some other stuff running on it, you may not be able to use this feature, least it keeps tripping your circuit breaker. Same goes for the Save-Smart feature and I haven't a clue how this feature is supposed to save energy. So, if auto and save-smart draw too many amps for your breaker, your only option is to skip these features and just use the Low setting which runs until you manually turn the unit off or use the timer.
The unit does not save settings when you turn it off, and always starts on the Hi setting when you turn it back on. So, for example, if the unit is off and you want it to run on auto/smart-save, and oscillate, you push start, then smart-save, then oscillate. Not the end of the world, but one would think....
I found a few Lasko units with manual (non-digital) controls with settings for fan only, and hi or low heat on the auto setting. But those units were smaller than what I was looking for. It seems strange that most, if not all, of the Lasko digital control units would not have the same options as the ones with manual controls. Again, one would think....and makes one wonder....
Since the basic unit does actually work very well, one might ask why only 3 stars. Well, it's because I believe that ANY unit should perform it basic function(s) as intended. That, to me, is average. And 3 stars is average. In fact, since the fan-only and auto with Lo functions are no-brainers for an engineer and doesn't cost a cent more to design in or to manufacture, 2 stars is probably more appropriate. The fact is, if we expect less, they'll give it to us! And just because "everybody does that" is no excuse. I expect better and I don't grade on a curve.

This lives in my 14x14 bedroom and keeps it heated perfectly.
Best features:
-Auto mode- you set the temp and it will turn on and off accordingly, to ensure the set room temp is maintained. Seriously, this makes the extra 25 bucks over other decent heaters well, well worth it.
-Oscillation is smooth and the heater never gets stuck.
-Not too loud. Noticeable, but much quieter than other space heaters I've tried.
