These rods are excellent for most saltwater fishing applications. I use mine both for trolling for kingfish, wahoo, and dolphin as well as bottom fishing for grouper, snapper, and amberjack. I did a lot of research to get the best quality and value and paired these rods with Penn Squall 60s. I highly recommend them. By the way, Walmart.com had the best price I could find anywhere.

Review 2 for Penn Mariner 6' Slick Butt Alum Reel Seat Standup

Useful for heavy duty fishing

This is a review of the Penn Mariner Stand Up Rod, Model 660CHST. The fishing rod has 6 aluminum oxide guides and tip, two handed foregrip, aluminum reel seat, and slick butt.
This fishing rod was reccommended to me for shore-based shark fishing years ago. This fishing environment can generate a lot of grit, a combination of salt, moisture, and find sand or mud particles. I prefer the fixed ring guides because rollers can require higher maintenance tempos than I wish to perform. The guides are large and accept knots very well.
The rod that I purchased from Walmart is the same that I bought from Bass Pro Shops 3 years ago except it was $17 cheaper. The finish was slightly marred, but it does not affect the performance of the fishing rod and you have to be looking for it. Walmart packaged the rod in its own tube. BPS bundled thier rods together with a rubber band and only 1 out 4 was undamaged, which is why I only bought 1.
This rod is an exceptional value. I highly reccommend it for 50# to 80# lines in difficult or dirty environments.
Be sure to get a rod belt to match. The butt cap is removable and slots into a fighting harness. You will need a kidney harness and stand-up tackle rod belt to fully utilize the power this stand up rod can generate: use your legs and not your back muscles.
Depending upon how you are fishing, a Penn 114H /114HW (6/0 or 6/0 wide), Penn 115 (9/0), or lever drag reel would be a good choice. I prefer the star drag reels for beach fishing because they handle the beach grit better than lever drag reels. I use a highly modified 114HW with one piece Tiburon frame, replacement spool, steel (rather than bronze) main gear sleeve and dog, and HT-100 drag washer stack. For the uninitiated, its like replacing the engine and transmission in a tuner car so it runs 'Fast and Furious' . . .or in this case, can catch large sharks.
Notes
1. Penn 114 attached for reference. This is the H2, or 'China Production' reel. I use the earlier American made version. There is a Wide version that I prefer, the 114HW.
2. Walmart does NOT have an appropriate rod belt at the time of this review.
