Review 1 for South Bend Royal Coachman Fly Reel

Nice reel for a great price

I bought this reel to go with a Crystal River rod that came in a $20 starter kit from Walmart. The reel that comes in the kit is junk, but the rod is not bad. I wanted a better reel for the rod, I did not want to spend a lot, since the rod would cost less than $20 on its own. This reel seems far superior to the graphite one that comes in the kit. It feels solid and looks very good for something so inexpensive. The disk drag tightens down well, but is probably not necessary, as I doubt it would hold up to a big saltwater fish, and no drag is needed for freshwater fish. It is set up for LH retrieve, but looks as if it may be possible to reverse it. However, since I am not using the drag, it really doesn't matter, as the click and drag seem to be about equal in both directions when the drag knob is turned to the lightest setting. I would highly recommend this reel for a starter or as a backup. If you are looking for a starter kit, I would recommend buying this reel and an inexpensive rod, rather than one of the cheap kits, as this reel seems better than the ones that come in the kits.

After a few months and not much use, the drag on this reel is just about stripped. It still clicks but you can feel and hear it slip. It still functions okay, but the drag is not really usable any more. They would probably be better off not putting any drag on it, and just make it as a click & pawl reel. It still seems like a solid reel for the price, but unless you really want the "classic" look, you'd be better off spending a few dollars more and getting a Cabelas Wind River reel.

The drag is not that good. It is a small arbor reel so it takes a lot of backing to fill the spool. It is worth the money. Blue gill and small bass or crappie it should be fine.

I bought this reel to replace my aging Shakespear reel. Initially the drag setting was torqued all the way tight but I was finally able to loosen it up to function properly. Overall it seems to be a well made reel but I have not have to opportunity to really try it out afield.

not precision

The reel is heavier than I thought. When I rotate it, the rotation is not straight and smooth. The product detail says it comes with a small bag, but no bag with it. It is not expensive and maybe I should not expect the high quality for the reel. Maybe it is ok to use for beginners.
