Transferring files is easy with the Targus TGR-MSD500 USB 2.0 SD Card Reader. This card reader features lightning-fast data-transfer speeds and high levels of encrypted security. It works fast to transfer data in just a few minutes. It is quick to install and very simple to use. This USB card reader is flat and compact and can be carried in your pocket wherever you go. The cap on the USB protects it when it is not in use. It is compatible with Windows Me/2000/XP/Vista and Mac Osx V10.1.2 Plus. It supports SD/SDHC/MMC/Micro SD/T-F. This micro SD card reader is a functional product that makes data transfer a lot easier.
Usually I like products from Targus because they're products are really cheap and work but this SD Card Reader does not last long at all. The structure is poorly made. The plastic breaks very easily. A child could crush it just by pressing down on the middle of it. Also some SD cards it won't read and some SD cards you have to format for it to be able to read it and lastly the problems I had with it is you can only have either an SD card or micro SDHC card in it for it to work. You can't have both otherwise Nothing with happen when you plug it in..

Review 2 for Targus USB 2.0 SD Card Reader
does not work as advertised

The package says it will work with Windows 7 but it does not. When it tries to load the drivers, a message comes up telling me I need to load windows 98 service pack 1 for it to work. That is a stupid response. Tracing the manufacturer's web site as Targus.com will take you someplace that looks like it should be the correct place but you need to go to Targusdigital.com. They do not acknowledge the unit sold at Walmart by the any of the product codes, but if you look long enough you will find a place where the product code will give you a driver that covers all of Windows, but that doesn't work either.

I bought the first so-called SDHC card reader on line. It would not read an 8 gig SD card. Returned it to a local Walmart store and bought my second Targus card reader there. It would read a 2 gig SD card but not my 8 gig card. Returned it and bought a Vivatar brand reader at Staples across the street. It works on my 8 gig and 32 gig SD cards.

This is the second card reader I bought and knew I wanted another Targus because of their features (caps both ends), convenience and ease of use.

Review 5 for Targus USB 2.0 SD Card Reader
Piece of Junk

I needed to get some photos off of my camera and did not have the USB cord. I picked this up at Walmart for $8.00. It DID NOT work at all, and it DESTROYED all of the photos on the memory card. There were numerous photos of my child's high school graduation and a family vacation. Luckily we were able to reformat the card, but the photos are likely gone. We've ordered a different card reader with the hope that we maybe able to recover some of the photos. It's pretty unlikely though.
Walmart should not sell this piece of junk.

2 of the 5 I purchased do not work, and one the cap broke as we opened it. It is only a $5 item so it does not make sence for me to pay someone to return it. The 3 that work are great.

I bought this to use with an SD card that I have in my digital camera. Since I bought it around the 14th of February I've had no issue what so ever. Hopefully that'll continue to be true. I use it not everyday, but every couple of days thus far. Each end comes off and while it could open a bit smoother. That's no big deal. The SD card goes in easily and the card reader read the SD card immediately.
I've seen some bad reviews and I suppose every item sent off doesn't always come without error nor does everything that one has will work with the item bought. Things like this just happen, but I have no complaints and none of this is fluff. It is what it is and if it were horrible I'd be telling that.
Hope more and more people have good luck with this!

Review 11 for Targus USB 2.0 SD Card Reader
Does not work.

I bought this in-store, and was excited to use it, as my computer does not read SDHC. My computer tries to look up the device driver, and cannot find it online. I tried going to the company website (Targus Digital, seperate from the Targus main company) and there is no product with the same product code. No drivers available. Stinks to buy a product you computer cannot recognize! I am running Windows 7.

Just recently purchased because of the price but I guess you get what you pay for!!! Used the reader once and it worked fine. Tried to use again and my computer(running XP) would only recognize that it was some sort of usb device with a problem. Now my pc won't even see the reader. Taking back for refund!! Pay the xtra money and get something more reliable.

I bought a SimpleTech 512 mb USB flash drive years ago when 512 mb was the highest capasity FlasDrive at the time and I still use it every day as i do this Targus SD card reader. I didn't do any research on this Targus SD card reader when I saw it at WalMart and I needed something that I could switch my SD cards around from my TOSHIBA Netbook, Desktop, Dell Laptop and Digital Camera and took a chance on it. It has a cap on both ends that snap off and on easy to change cards and to plug it into a USB port or cable. It has been a perfect little reader for what I payed for it. I know some don't like USB card readers that have cover caps because they can get lost if you don't have a place to put then when not in use. I will buy another and will recomend it if you need a low cost SD card reader.

Wish I'd read the reviews before buying. This really tarnishes Targus' reputation for me. Returned it and bought the Sunpak 72-in-1 reader on the next peg, which does read 2Gb cards.

I knew this memory card reader was too good to be true. The cheap plastic lid splintered into pieces when I took it out of the package. I took it promptly back for a refund.

Review 19 for Targus USB 2.0 SD Card Reader
Piece of junk...

When I saw this I figured the price was just right for something as simplistic as a single card reader. The only reason I wanted it was so I could more easily transfer pictures taken with my DSLR to my PC. Previously I would have to have my camera attached to the PC the whole time and swap SD cards in and out of the camera just to get my day's worth of photos onto the PC. This card reader fails at even the simplest of tasks. Out of 5 PNY 32gig SDHC cards it doesn't recognize any of them. Out of 3 random 8gig SDHC cards, it only reads one. Ironically made by PNY. I basically cut my losses and just keep the one 8gig card in it that does work and just use it as USB flash drive. I wouldn't recommend this thing to anyone. I've attempted reading from it under Windoze XP, 7, and Linux, with the same results every time.

Waste of Money

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to depend on which memory card I'm using. Some work, some don't. Do not recommend. Had purchased a different, more expensive one, from a different store that worked, but I returned when I believed this one worked. Should have kept the more expensive one only, since now I have to go purchase that one too in addition to this one.
