Introducing the TomTom VIA 1535TM GPS offering superior driving intelligence with Free Lifetime Map and Traffic Updates with no advertisements. Travel throughout the US, Canada and Mexico with ease and style. This innovativeTomTom 1535 navigator boasts a contemporary slim design with brushed-aluminum finish, a new intuitive user interface on a 5.0" touchscreen and over one million more miles of mapped roads in the US. This TomTom 5" GPS is also enhanced with a suite of features designed to help you drive more safely, including voice recognition and Bluetooth hands-free calling
This is my second Tom Tom. My last one I used almost daily for 6 years. I take it in my suitcase when I travel so I never get lost. The new one has a little different configurations, will be an adjustment. The bonus is the lifetime maps and traffic. The other GPS's don't always have the current maps on them at point of sale. Only downside is the battery doesn't last the life of the unit, and can't be replaced. Also, my first one was $700. This one was much less:) Enjoy!

Review 2 for TomTom VIA 1535TM 5" GPS w/Lifetime Traffic & Map Updates
Tried a Garmin first, plugged into the computer for reg and update, before it even finished the first update it told me the memory was full and to go buy a chip. No thanks, I took it back and got the TOMTOM. It works great and does what I need it too, plus free downloads for different voices. The voice recognition works great, gives me the right options when it can't decide on one. The only problem is with Ave B,C,D,E,G,P,T,V. If your going to those streets a lot you will have to do it manually. This isn't a surprise and isn't a drawback for me. Does a great job navigating street to street and the lane assist is especially helpful.
Best of all, no purchase of extra chip reguired for updates.

Just used it for the first time to get to the home of a craigslist seller who lives way out in the sticks. He said that two previous buyers were no-shows. I believe that they couldn't find the place and gave up!

The new TomTom rocks ! I'm on the road every week traveling to art shows and it even knows all of my short cuts the old tomtom never picked up. The hands free phone is the best thing I've had since I had a vehicle with onstar.

Issue rich product

I don't believe this company has done it's job in getting bugs out of this product before putting on the market. Had issues with it immediately just trying to get it registered. The short and long of it, it took them two weeks to solve the issues of registration and updating, then it halts and suffers slow response sometimes so I re-start it. Their customer service and technical support also was not impressive to so the least. This is my second Tom Tom GPS. The first was great but became obsolete with age so I wanted to remain loyal as I was impressed with the old unit. Very disappointed!

I purchased it for a trip to Ky and Ar. It stopped working after 10 hours. Really liked all the features. What a shame. Also the price has gone up online on this unit. Not sold in stores and unable to exchange this unit for a new one. So no choice but get a refund.

Review 12 for TomTom VIA 1535TM 5" GPS w/Lifetime Traffic & Map Updates
Nightmare

We bought this unit recently and it was a nightmare! For one, it took very long for the device to locate us everytime we turned it on. I used a Garmin before. The Garmin unit gave me problems too once in a while, but it was only when the weather was cloudy, or when I was driving through many high rise buildings. The Garmin unit also quickly asked me Are You Indoors? This TomTom unit, on the other hand, took its time to turn on EVERY TIME - 5 minutes at least or even 20 minutes on one occasion. I read about not being able to update maps on this device before we bought this unit. We got lucky and were able to update maps - IT ONLY TOOK US HOURS AND NUMEROUS PHONE CALLS WITH CUSTOMER SUPPORT!! Then, we started a short trip with the newly updated maps and we were directed to a highway/bridge, which was closed. After blaming my wife for not knowing how to drive and being blamed for not being able to read GPS maps, we found out on Google that the bridge had been closed for months. Google map was able to get us out of the area, and this GPS unit kept trying to take us back to the closed route. We returned the unit right after we got back from that trip.

BEFORE you purchase a Via 1535 TM, go to TomTom's website and check out their forum on the Via series. It is awful. Not the forum, but what Dis-Satisfied users are saying. I am surprised the company hasn't corrected the software problem. I now use a 550 XXL TM on the old software (Tom-Tom Home) and it works great.
Overall, I think the 1535 WILL be great once TomTom gets their act together and stops being what appears to me as greedy and gets their software up and running.
I am disappointed that they put out the via 1535 TM and advertised it to do basically everything, when it hasn't from the start. I have been waiting over six months for them to fix their software. Some, I hear have been waiting over a year. Heck the unit will be a relic if/when they get the software fixed.
You can't (no function available yet) back-up the GPS, you can't get QuickGPSFix, you can get/update speed or red-light cameras plus quite a few other things you still can't do.
So, its not the GPS that is the problem, it is the manufacturer of the GPS that put it out and marketed it before it was fully operational. It seems like.....let's get their money and then we can deal with them or put them off later.
Lastly, if you have or have had a Tom Tom product and had to call their Customer Service, you are in for a real treat. Again, check out their forum on their website. I am surprised TomTom allows the people to rant/vent as they do and yet they don't heed the issues and correct them.
They have outsourced their C/S department to somewhere in Central Mexico. The C/S reps try but it appears they have their hands tied and can basically only read a paper, no real functional help for the most part. My last tango with them was trying to get the unit to turn on. Their response was for me to take a picture of the Life Time Map Code and email it to them. What that has to do with the unit even turning on, is beyond me. They didn't know/understand what I was talking about or didn't want to deal with the issue.
I think a little more training and latitude for some of them would be in order. However on the other hand, I was able to talk to a friendly C/S rep and although they ended up not being able to help me, they did try and enlist help from others. So some C/S reps were trying. I think just a poorly managed company putting out products that do NOT work as advertised. Not too good of word-of-mouth advertising on their part. Seems like more concerned on getting our hard earned money for a product that does not work as advertised.

Most of the functionality STILL is not available, such as camera, updates, backup just to name a few. They put out the unit before the software platform was ready. News Flash - The software platform STILL is not ready. On the positive side, once they get the software platform fully functional (if/when) it should be great. For general GPS use it is great. But, for the functionality you PAY for it is POOR. Maybe by mid 2012 some of the functionality may work. Had I not got this as a gift, I would have immediately returned it. For the price and functionality, I went down and purchased a T/T 550 WTE with Maps and it works Fantastic, but it works on the T/T Home software platform. T/T from what I heard will be migrating the software platform to T/T.com one day.

Wife got me this TomTom to replace an older Garmin unit. Switching from day light mode to night mode takes up to two minutes (rather distracting). Tried it out going to work (been driving there for 20+ years), it missed the address by 1/4 mile, and correction is too hard to get to. There is no option for detouring at my choice. I would send this back except I don't want to hurt my wife's feelings, I'll just have to continue to explore the unit until I'm comfortable with it, right now I would not trust this on a long trip or to find my way to a location I've never been to near home (it can find my home OK). In a nutshell I much prefer another brand (anything but TomTom).
