I have seen similar type cameras for more than double to four times the price, the key here is the unknown name. Its a great inbetween camera for those what non SLR camera with more than point and shot abilities. The auto night mode is awesome. It has a general auto mode too. I'm going to anime expo and planning on taking a few thousand photos, i wll see about the battery life (4 AA style); i just bought a 8 way charging system and 34 3000Mah batteries. I figure i ill go thru 8 - 12 batteries a day for 5 days for a range of 800 to 2500 pictures each day, mostly without a flash. I can take continuous photos; and more than that even.

The camera takes great photos in all the different settings I have tried. The only bad thing is the delay from when I press the button until the picture actually takes. There is anywhere from a 0.5 second to a 1.5 second shutter delay depending on the lighting or settings being used.

When I first glanced at this camera at a store (cannot remember what store it was) I was apprehensive. But after considering all the other major top-tier cameras in the market (including those bundled at wholesale outlets), I gave this obscure camera another look on the Internet and indeed it caught my eye, in particular are the white GE X-series digital cameras. And since digital camera manufacturers and sellers require you to pay a huge premium on the number of pixels (resolution) a camera has, I decided to purchase the white GE X500 Ultrazoom Digital Camera with 16 megapixels of resolution. The price is hard to beat even in the mid-tier camera category, it has a better picture than a small digital point-and-click camera especially in low-light conditions because of its larger lens. I was interested at first on the X600 with its 150x combined zoom capability (25x optical times 6x digital) but the X500 will beat that camera in the resolution category (the X600 only has 14.4 megapixels of resolution). Since I already have experience using a small point-and-click camera, the controls on the X500 did not become too foreign to me. The new features, like Panorama, Face Detection, Blink and Smile Detection, Automatic Scene Mode (ASCN), etc. just came about with the assistance of its owner's operating manual (I had to refer to its manual to familiarize myself with the new features). But all of its modes (or controls) are easy to configure being completely intuitive, just refer to its automatic 2.7-inch LCD screen for guidance. The photos it takes are outstanding, it is phenomenal if you apply its Scene Mode (SCN). And be sure you have a very good inkjet printer if you intend on "blowing up" or print a large-size photo of your shots. The camera comes complete also with Image Stabilization and Face Detection features that GE is pioneering on making them standard in all of their digital cameras. The camera is complete, and if you are indeed a budding photographer, this camera will not let you down. I believe it can even go further. My overall assessment of this camera (X500) is Excellent or Outstanding. It is a well thought-out camera, a unique design, a durable construction, and a hefty weight. Unfortunately, there is no "hot shoe" for a larger, long-range flash unit. The flash included has a range of 23 feet according to its Internet specifications, which is a good medium range (23 feet). If you really need to take more distant pictures with a flash unit then that is the time you need a top-tier digital camera with a "hot shoe". Its integral flash unit is also outstanding. I personally recommend this camera to both professional and amateur photographers also. GE is known for excellent products, and these cameras are along that line.

I am a property inspector and use this camera all the time for work and play. This is a great camera for the money and looks high end in the white. The camera is a bright white, in the picture it looks like a dull white. Get rechargeable batteries and print out the manuel to learn the camera and its many great features.

I wish I were able to say more about this camera. I got it after I read all the good reviews. And I still think it is a good camera.
Only it is too heavy.
Even with the strap around the neck wasn't any lighter. In a hot day, having this as heavy hanging your neck. it is not pretty, or comfortable.
Someone younger with a better grip of their hands have it much easier handling this camera, as it is bulky. I didn't even know how to hold it properly. But this might be a knew look as I seen it in many other brands.

I was very upset when I dropped my Minolta because I knew I couldn't justify buying another. Well, not true! This GE has a better zoom, nearly 4 times the megapixels and way more neat features (smile recognition, face recognition etc.) I haven't used all the scene modes yet, but after only a couple weeks, I'm thrilled with this purchase.

This seemed like a good buy after reading the specs and reviews. When I got my camera and started taking pictures, my heart sank. The pictures are horrible! They are so blurry. And after reading all of the directions about the settings on this camera I still can't get it to take good pictures. I am going to return this camera for a refund asap. It looks cool and has a bunch of cool sounding features, but buying this camera is like burning a $100 bill.

This is a great camera for all occasions. I take professional photos for various occasions and this piece of precise craftsmanship does exactly the trick. The detail in the exterior surface can't be beat; my fingers don't slip when I'm holding the camera with one hand due to it's easy to grip texture. I chose the white version and it reminds me of something out of Star Wars! I would recommend this camera to anybody, I already encouraged two other people to get one of their own!

I got it from Kmart for christmas and returned it because camera kept freezing. I had to remove batteries to restart.

Picture quality is mediocre at best

Thought I'd try it since the photo quality was rated on par with better cameras on CR. But actually, it is lousy picture quality as compared with my little Panasonic and Fujifilm point and shoot cameras. Lense is poor quality, as I suspected it might be, but for the price and having a viewfinder, decided to try it. For casual use, it's o.k., but expensive for the low quality results. Also agree that screen and viewfinder imagery is poor. Would recommend a little Fujifilm that is cheaper and better photos. Returned the GE to Walmart and sprung for the Nikon Coolpix P510 and no OMG comparison! Of course, big difference in price. A good compromise might be the Fujifilm Finepix S4250 as I have an older similar model and it does take some very nice photos and has a viewfinder. This GE though is not worth the money; much better point and shoot options for under $100 by Nikon, Fujifilm, and others.
