I decided that buying an external CD/DVD drive would be cheaper than trying to repair my laptop's internal drive. I am happy to report that this product works! I can now do everything I did before.

It performs as expected, and is great for netbook users for installing software. We did encounter one issue that made us think it was non-functional at first, though: when we plugged the unit in, it did not power up. What we found was that you first have to plug into the USB ports, THEN plug into the back of the unit for it to power on. I don't know why it doesn't power on when you plug into the unit first, but the point is, it does work, and great, at that. I like that it works on non-level surfaces as well.

Got these for my daughters (11 and 13) to use with their Dell mini netbooks. Work great! Good value for the money, and make their netbooks so much better since we can now install programs, they can rip their own CD's for use with their ipods, etc. Love that they are USB powered. They have Windows XP, so it was just plug and play-the computer detected it and set it up all on its own. I'd recommend.
