These are by FAR the best books I have ever read. Each book is like 800 pages plus yet you blow right through them cause you can't put them down. On sale for $21 here all the time even though they are worth like $35 and you can get free site to store shipping like I did and they come in fast and mine was in good shape. HBO has made this a TV show and it's just as good as the books, but the books go into WAY more detail. This is the first 4 books only but the 5th is out now sold seperatly but it's a very nice box set. There are 7 or 8 total books planned last I knew and I can't wait for the story to finish even though many a fav character has been killed off.

George Martin has set the bar unbelievably high with "Game of Thrones". I like to think of this as "anti fantasy" because after getting through each book you thank God that you don't live in that world.
The Ice and Fire series is grim, harsh and ugly...the way medieval life would truly be....yet it is because of that very thing, the series shines. Yes, there be dragons and castles...and thar even be mammoths and witches, too; ( arrrr, even some pirates ) but they are only set pieces for compelling characters of all sorts. The action is very well written and the characters are quite realistic in their behavior. Unlike much fantasy, even the evil characters in the Ice and Fire Series have good moments and they have REASONS for being evil...though they generally do not see themselves as such. Same goes for the "good guys".
The chapters are generally very short which makes the books easy to put down when you HAVE to. Rarely will you WANT to.
Those who are sensitive to the plights of women and children will find these books very harsh...and medieval life truly was....just a warning.
Getting FOUR of the paperbacks for 20 bucks ISN'T a good buy...by the way...IT'S A STEAL!!!!!!!

Those of you who know Game of Thrones only from the HBO series now have an opportunity to buy a boxed set of the first four books at an unbelievable price. I love the TV series, but the books are the finest fantasy works since Tolkien, and are very much a canon of American imaginative fiction. They are long. Very long. Really, really long. And there are a lot of characters, lots and lots of characters. But the completeness of Martin's world, the variety of his people, the depth of his themes, his broad humanity and firm moral bearings suggest no one quite so much as Tolstoy. All of this wonder is yours for less than a movie and a popcorn. True the print is small, the bindings fragile, and the maps nearly indecipherable but this set will give you more for your money than any other set by a living writer.

I knew this show was on HBO but usually I would rather read the books. I decided to buy them and I am so impressed. I don't usually like fantasy but these are very well done. Also, the books came in about two days when they said it would be over a week, so a definite plus!!

Got this as a give for my husband since we watch it on HBO & he can hardly wait for the next season. He is on book 2 after a week + of having it. The print is kinda small but he hasn't complained about it.
This is a great show & great series.... He said their is much more details than the show tells but you get a more indepth understanding of why things are the way they are.
