The Schwinn A40 Elliptical Trainer is a quality, sturdy, no-nonsense front-drive model that is an exceptional value. This Schwinn elliptical also includes seven programs that provide a workout variety. This elliptical machine has a computer-controlled eddy current resistance and perimeter weighted flywheel to ensure quiet operation and smooth stride. A grip heart rate enables you to monitor your fitness level and an integrated 2-speed fan keeps you cool. The Schwinn A40 Elliptical Trainer also features an integrated leveling feet that offer enhanced stability for this exercise machine while also protecting the floor. The Schwinn elliptical trainer is battery-operated (not included) but an optional AC adapter can also be used for power.

I really like the design of this machine, the weight is focused on 2 large rolling wheels under the pedals rather than hanging on the rotating assembly. I think it will last a good while. There is only a little bit of squeaking but thats an easy fix. Overall operation is quiet though. I would have given 5 stars if it came with an AC adapter. If you are a looking for an elliptical machine with good value, this is what you're looking for. I also works well for taller people over 6 feet or others with a long stride. I had no trouble with assembly and all parts fit together properly. It will take 1 hour to 1.5 hours to assemble if you aren't in a rush.

I think the trainer is well built, not difficult to assemble, quiet, and overall great exercise. However, the arm exercisers are too far from the body of the unit. This requires that using them one has to assume an uncomfortable forward leaning position.

Pros: Easy set-up. It only took me less than 2 hours to set-up. The assembly guide is easy to understand and direct to the point. It's easy and comfortable to use. I'm 5'5" and my wife is 4'11" so it's just the right size.
Cons: It doesn't come with a power adapter. I bought one in eBay immediately so I won't be using size D batteries. The machine is somewhat squeaky but was quickly resolved by spraying some WD-40 on all joints. Maybe because the machine is on the carpet without a thick pad underneath. Another con is that the LCD display has no back-light so it's hard to read the data displayed and the fan is completely useless so don't even bother to turn it on.
Nevertheless, the A40 is a great machine for the budget conscious.

easy to put together, I like the a/c adapter option, I already had a compatable adapter, stride is not as big as I would like, but overall I am happy with this eliptical, would recommend this to others

It is a very good work out.I bought a clip on light because I couldn't read the display.I also bought the power supply cord.It is very quiet.I use it 6 days a week.The fan is a waste of space, it doesn't blow any air out.Very good workout for the money.

After one week...
Right pedal squeaks. Any suggestions to fix?
Overall smooth operation. The machine was a little larger than anticipated, but fits well in my bedroom. Easy assembly by my handyman, we were done in 1.5 hours.
Have been using daily for limited time periods, but already feel energized.
Console is small, but if I focus I can read output. Heart monitor is not helpful as it takes too long to register info.

I have never used an elliptical before so I was a bit scared to get started, but even after just a week of owning it and using it - I'm hooked. It is very quiet and has a smooth glide so it doesn't bother anyone else in the house while I'm working out. I have it in our bedroom so I can watch TV while I do it and I don't have to turn it up too loud to hear over the elliptical. I'm very excited about continuing my workouts. The only negative is the display isn't backlit so if I don't turn on the overhead light in the room, I can't read the display. But other than that it seems to be great.

This is a good piece of exercise equipment for the money. I read many reviews on many different styles and prices of Ellipticals and found the Schwinn A40 to be a good value and reliable as rated by users. The A40 has a much smaller foot print than our previous treadmill and is easily moved about if necessary.
I found the assembly to be fairly straight forward and easy if you have even a small amount of mechanical ability. The assembly instructions I think would have been easier to understand if the images were supported by more textual info. All in all however.... Not bad!
I think the manufacturer should include a small amount (tube) of grease/lubricant for use on all the moving/rotating parts. I used my own and it ultimately made for a much more smooth and quiet stride.

As for the actual operation of the A40, I rate it as good. The stride and overall operation of the A40 is smooth, quiet, and seems to provide a varied workout level depending on the pre-programmed or manual settings provided by the user at the control panel. As for the control panel, it could use some work. The fan is useless and provides no air on the user at all. It would be much nicer if the control panel view screen was back lit. Unless you have a lamp on immediately overhead you will barely be able to see the settings being displayed on the screen. Really poor engineering. This is not what I would refer to as a 'CHEAP' piece of equipment and the cost for Schwinn to add a back lit panel would have been minimal. Having now completed several solid work outs on the A40 I can say it definitely provides the user with good cardio exercise.
In summary.... would I buy it and/or recommend to a friend? Absolutely! Add a better control panel and I'd rate is as a five.

I love this machine!!! The price is amazing and it is very quiet. The only issue is the display and there is no light and very hard to see I bought a book light and it is on it's way, I am hoping that will solve the problem as other people found that helpful. Worth while purchase!!! No gym necessary! I can get my aerobic exercise in my own living room and the machine is not obtrusive looking and does not take up that much room! I am very happy so far. I have only had it for a week! Hoping it will last and stay quiet.

After reading reviews I decided to give it a try. I have never had an elliptical & didn't want to spend a lot of money since I didn't know how much use it would get. I've used it for a little over a week now & it's worked out great. It's very quiet & smooth. My husband had it together easily in about 45 min & no squeaking like others complained about. The fan is worthless as others have mentioned. The only complaint I would have is that it could be a bit easier to program the workouts. The directions seemed easy but it never worked out & I had to keep pushing buttons by trial & error to get what I wanted. Some complained about not being able to set the time of the workout but I'm not sure why...it starts at 15 min & you can adjust it easily.

Great machine for the money. This a great machine for starter or first time user, or even the senior user. It has 5 levels, but it basic and easy to use. The only negative I can think of is that the display panel is not backlit and the fan doesn't really work. Other than that it's very quiet and it was easy to assemble. For me, this was a really great value for a quality, basic elliptical. I am quite satisfied and hope to enjoy this machine for years to come!

Ordering was easy and delivery was actually early. I used the expedited shipping option and it was 7 bucks cheaper than standard shipping.
Upon arrival, i unpacked all the parts and noticed the hardware blister pack had exploded. There were about 50 bolts and washers mixed in with the sea of styrofoam blocks and plastic bags. Even with that added level of difficulty, assembly was easy. There was only one little washer missing.
My complaint, besides the washer being missing, is that there was a sticker instead of a real Schwinn head badge. How hard would it have been to put a real head badge on the thing?
My g/f and I use the thing for 20 mins each every day and I love how quiet this machine is. I've been sleeping in the next room while she was on it and it didnt even wake me up.
All in all i'd say it's a good machine and I'd recommend it to my friends.

The Elliptical is sturdy and operates smoothly. I am a bigger guy, but the system is still stable. There are only two real issues I have with this unit.
1.) it takes a great deal of time to put it together. Not a huge issue, it does come with all the proper tools etc.
2.) the display is very hard to read. I hope schwinn improves it, its the only major complaint I have.

I bought this after my cheap elliptical broke. I wanted a better machine without spending $1000. It arrived at my home within 3 days. It took my husband about 2.5 hours to put together. All of the parts were there and fit correctly. I have used this 30 minutes a day for over a week. The machine is very quiet and sturdy. I am 5'7 and the stride seems a bit short for me. But, I am adjusting and it does not keep me from using the machine. As mentioned in other reviews the fan is pointless and the pulse monitor is inaccurate. Neither of these things are that important to me. This machine gets me sweating and makes you work. I am very happy with my purchase. This is an awesome machine for the price.

We were very limited in our budget, so we decide to choose this product. We ordered it by site to store, it took 2 week to deliver. When we were getting it from the counter in the store it took really long time and it was heavy but we made it. My boyfriend put it together during 2 days. It was pretty easy except a few screws were with damaged tips so we were need to order the screws on the different website for 6 dollars. We ordered AC adapter from schwinn power supply - it works good.
In our opinion this is a good machine for beginners or for people who really limited in the budget. It feels smooth when you use it, but it makes some noise so you will need to get additional lubrication. The fan doesn't make any difference - it doesn't feel when it's on. The heart rate monitor makes not correct measurement. The monochrome monitor has a really bad quality. So I think if I would know that before I would better get machine without any screens or heart rate monitors.
