OnkyoOnkyo AVX-280 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package
This entry-level Onkyo home theater receiver/speaker package offers a brilliant combination of up-to-date features and rock-solid performance. At the heart of the system, the receiver pumps out 5.1 channels of finely calibrated surround sound. Three HDMI 1.4a inputs give you seamless, one-cable connection of high definition sources such as a Blu-ray player, a gaming console, and a cable/satellite tuner. The receiver can handle most audio formats, including advanced lossless codecs from Dolby and DTS. Digital signals passed through the Onkyo surround sound receiver are converted to analog by high-quality Burr-Brown DACs. To provide more low-end heft, Onkyo also includes EX.Bass technology. Among the other highlights on the receiver are a handy overlaid On-Screen Display, a Universal Port for peripherals, and specialized audio modes for different game genres. A compact, yet loud, Onkyo surround sound 5.1-speaker system rounds out the Onkyo home theater receiver/speaker package.

this receiver is extremely picky when it comes to HDMI components. It seems to have HDCP handshake problems with a variety of HDMI dvd and bluray players. I have an LG DVD player that won't work and has never worked via the hdmi input thru the Onkyo. i contacted Onkyo service to see how to correct this and I was told that they knew of no handshake issues with LG devices. He told me to reset my receiver and if that didn't work, it was a problem with my dvd player. well my LG dvd player works just fine with every TV i've hooked it up to. I also have a memorex blu ray that up until today worked fine with Onkyo. I unhooked it to reconfigure a few things, and now upon rehooking it up via HDMI, the screen is blurry and fuzzy. I'm using the exact same HDMI cord I was before. I've tried 6 other HDMI cords to try and hook up the blu ray player, and i get a fuzzy screen with each one. If i hook up the blu ray player with the same HDMI cord directly to the TV, it works just fine. So my only conclusion is that this receiver has some HDCP handshake issues which makes it worthless if you can't hook up devices to the receiver via HDMI. i will be contacting Onkyo to see about a exchange since i'm past my 90 day return to walmart.

I bought a Sony home theater for a hundred dollars less but couldnt get the front speaker to level up because it would only calibrate and wouldnt turn up or down. So I spent the extra one hundred for this system and fell in love with it. I cant say enough about the sound of this system. I use it for my Playstation, MP3, and movies and it is a wonderful sounding system even with the radio I get all the channels in great. Thinking of getting HD radio from Onkyo next for it also.

I have some technology set-up experience, but not with home theater systems. I took me about 45 minutes for the initial set-up, mainly because the speaker wires had to be pulled through holes in my built-in entertainment center. One aspect I did not set up correctly initially was the two front speakers on each side; they get wired on the left hand side of the rear of the receiver, not next to the other wires for the speakers. Also, I initially noticed the dialogue volume was low. However, when I pressed the "Audio" button on the remote and cycled through the different speakers, I found I was able to increase the decible level for the front speakers; this helped tremendously. One other snag I eventually straightened out was getting the speakers to function while watching cable shows; I have the reciever hooked up through the blu-ray. Once I realized I could run an audio cable directly from the tv to the receiver, it was like magic. I have this system hooked into a 55" Vizio with built-in wifi and it works great! Great sound...

You can not go wrong with Onkyo. I figured for the price they would have cut allot of corners, but I get the same great sound out of this one as one would from the thousand dollar system.

Only available online, but worth the wait. Surround sound is excellent quality, I hooked everything including my pc that routes thru the receiver to the hdtv. Once you figure out how to setup the hdmi settings, you can also use only the tv speakers, for late night without disturbing others.
I paid $300.94 including tax. what a deal! I bought it after reading other's reviews. Can't go wrong for the price.

I had a general poor opinion of wally world electronics but Onkyo makes great stuff so when I came across this I decided to take a gamble on it and it really paid off. The sound quality is phenomenal and the price is right. I have it hooked up to my Panasonic DMP-BDT110 Bluray Player by optical cable using the bluray player bitstreaming both all forms of Dolby and DTS sound to the Onkyo receiver and the playback is seamless. Also This took me less than an hour to assemble and have completely functional. Thank you wal-mart.com for carrying this, this truely is a great piece of equipment. Simple enough for a beginner with enough features to satisfy more seasoned home audio gurus all in all a nice combo.

Connected the system to my PS3, Xbox 360, TV, and Direct TV box through the assigned HDMI cables.
****YOU NEED to CONNECT your TV to the receiver. Then you connect your systems and cable/dish with HDMI cables to your receiver. So there will be only one HDMI connection to your TV, which is from the TV to the receiver. ****
The back speaker wires are pretty short.
The sound is nice.
Overall great buy.

I bought the new Onkyo AVX-280 5.1- last month, after reading the reviews. I am very happy with the purchase. Has met & exceded my wishs by far. Wanted a reciver that would give clarity & bass. I had not relized my windows would rattle like they do now, had a sony 1000 watt reciver & this new Onkyo really put it to shame. the only complaint now that i have is my wife, she makes me keep the volume below 8, when in the house, it will go five times that amount. My room is 16 by 18 ft. It has so many bells and whiles, that you will be tricking it out for days for fun. So very easy to setup, a 12 year old can make it happen with ease, everything color coded & matched, very easy pictorial guide as well, use HDMI cables, is only way to go.Really, you would have to be a real goofball to mess anything up when sitting it up, bought the phillips 40 in. flat screen, both are realy great. a pice of cake to incorperate, have fun!

I had few hundred dollars in Walmart gift cards saved up and decided it was a good time to replace my old surround sound. I was quickly loured to the Onkyo AVX-280. I didn't do much research other than reading other customer reviews. I've had the system for a few weeks now and it is a great product. Some reviews claim that it sounds the same as their more expensive competitors such as Bose. I disagree. How ever it does sound better than many systems in the same price range.
Cons - What you may want to know is that the system is only speakers and a receiver. "NOT A BLU-RAY PLAYER". It is "blu-ray ready" however. Another disappointment was the remote. I wanted to make Onkyo remote control my entire system but could not find the codes anywhere. Not in the manual, online, or even on the Onkyo website (which isn't very useful). After a little research I learned that many other people who bought and like this product had the same issue.
A pretty neat feature is the hdmi and aux ports. I ran my blu-ray, xbox, and satellite through my Onkyo system. Not only is the picture quality great, but when I turn on or off one appliance the receiver will follow.

So far, so good. The one problem I had was I didn't read the instructions thoroughly prior to putting it together so I didn't think it was working. It took me a long time of messing around with it and lots of frustration to realize what the A & B button does. Definitely figure this out before wasting lots of time, like I did. This is my first experience with a surround sounds system, so I am enjoying it thus far, I do wish the cords for the back speakers were longer, I will probably end up going out to buy more speaker wire to get them where I want them.

I was looking for an audio system to use with my Mitsubishi big screen but didn't want to spend a fortune and didn't need something to blow the doors off. I did some extensive comparison shopping and found this Onkyo at Wal-Mart. In comparing with other similar Onkyo units and Sony and Panasonic I decided this was the unit.
I have had the system for 6 months and have zero complaints. Hook up is easy and set up for your particular needs and wants is easy. There are some features not found on much higher priced units but again for the $$$ everything I need.
The speakers come with specific color coded wiring if you wish to use those out of the box. I decided to purchase higher quality 16 gauge wiring and am glad that I did. Not a "knock" on the wiring that came with the system but I wanted the length custom to my needs.
To date everything has worked fine. My only complaint is I purchased a Sony BDP 470 3D Blu Ray and so far cannot get it to work. I am going to upgrade HDMI cables as I believe that is the problem. I have a Phillips Blu-Ray that works perfectly and the sound is awesome but found the Sony at a price I couldn’t refuse.
Again everything is relative, $$$ for quality and I cannot say enough positive comments about this unit and would recommend to anyone.
