Does the job, 03/01/2010

This is my first road bike. I've taken it out on a couple of 25 miles rides and can't complain. I went on these treks with riders with more expensive rides. I held my own with this bike the whole ride through. But when I tested out the speed of this bike, and I got passed up by the more experienced rider with the more expensive bike, even though my GPS told me I went 32 Mph. I plan to try my first race with this bike and if I really like this sport I will probably by a more expensive bike and save this one as my commuter. But I have to agree this is a great first bike for the price.

I will keep this short, as I have not put many miles on my bike yet. Just wanted to say that from the get go, if the customer swapped out the nylon tires for some reputable ones, ride quality would be enhanced very much. the folded aluminum frame is lolzy, typical for a GM product though.

A wonderful bike!, 02/12/2010

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I have been shopping for a road bike for some time. I was going to purchase one last year but was unable to afford one. (I know the old saying: "For the price of just a few car payments you can have a real nice bike.") Unfortunatly I already have a car payment, mortgage, kids, etc). So I went without a bike. I told myself not this year.

I ordered this bike and had it shipped site to store. It came within a week in perfect condition. It is pretty streight forward to assemble and looks wonderful! I like the looks of the 2010 model (black and yellow) more than the older blue one. I adjusted the breaks without any problem and took it out for a ride. It works very well.
I am 6' 3" 220 pounds and it fits me just fine.

I highly recommend this bike!

Review 5 for 700C GMC Denali Men's 26" Road Bike

Good value! Worth the Price, 02/06/2010
By GarBear12, Rogers, AR
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This is my first road bike, and i must say that i'm impressed, especially because it's a walmart bike. I'm 5'11" and the bike is a perfect fit. I got it for christmas, and because of weather conditions, i've only been able to ride it once for about a 15 mile ride. Before i went out, i had to adjust the front derailleur and the brakes. During the ride, I never had problems shifting, and it never skipped track when i had to accelerate from a stop. There are a few cons tho, one being the weight of the bike, and another being that the shifters and brakes are not in the same place which makes for a lot switching back and forth in riding positions. The last negative, which was a big one for me, being i have to drive to where i ride first, is that there is no quick release on the front tire. Overall, this is a wonderful bike, and if you're willing to spend a little more money, all of the cons i have listed can be fixed.

Great Bike, 01/25/2010
By TheNoobCyclist, Los Angeles, CA
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

Great bike for the money, and priced way below any other road bikes out there. I'm just a beginner and this bike fits my needs perfectly. It basically came fully assembled just add the pedals, handle bars and front tire and your ready to go. I read the reviews before I bought the bike and they were for the most part good except for someone who replaced all the parts on it. If your a professional rider than buy a $2500 bicycle, if your an average rider then stick with this one and you can't go wrong.

LOVE THIS BIKE, 01/21/2010
By SeabPA, Philadelphia, PA
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I fell in love with this bike for it was made for me, for I am 6'3 and anyone smaller may have trouble with the height of the bike. It is a beautiful color and very light weight. I liked the light weight for I have to carry it into the house and up steps. It rides so nice. Way to go Wal-Mart for having a very nice bike that is good on the road and at a cheap price and great weight for someone like me. Mountain bikes are just to heavy and bulky for me to handle. I really like the bike. Very easy to put together and adjust the seat, brakes and items, I had it together with in the hour and ready to ride. The only thing that I have find wrong with it so far is the seat, for it is very hard and uncomfortable, this is one thing that I will need to replace but that is no big deal. The brakes are tight and the shifting is very easy. I would recommend this for anyone that is looking for a first time bike for the road. It has everything that you need to get started and start biking. I live in Philly and bikes come in handle here because of the very heavy traffic of automobiles. I even got the bike shipped to another store and it was delivered right on the date that they told me to look for it. Thanks Wal-Mart for having a nice bike at a very good price

Great for the price, 01/11/2010
By cyclecrazy
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

Great product for the price. Rides very good and perfect for my 6ft frame. A little difficult to adjust the derailiers but once it's good it's good. Shifters are not in a good place for safe riding but you get used to it. Bike is a little heavy for a road bike but the next option is an $800 Trek or $1100 Cannondale. If you are just getting into road cycling, purchase this bike first and make sure you like road cycling. Then, if you enjoy it, take it to the next level with a more expensive bike.

Nice Bike Good Price, 12/30/2009
By BobBikerider
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

My son wanted a "Road Bike" for xmas. These are difficult to find in stores since "Mountain" bikes are currently more popular. I found this bike at the WalMart website and checked the reviews. Based on the honest positive reviews, good price and WalMart's reputation for customer service I decided to buy it. I had it shipped to store which took one week (the Walmart estimate was two weeks to ship to store). After it arrived at the store I received a confirmation email. The email noted that I could wait up to two weeks to pick up the purchase. This worked out well since it was a xmas gift. At the store the pick up process was quick and painless. As usual the employees that I spoke to were knowlegable and courteous. The bike is great my son loves it. It is well made, light weight <35# and a good value for it's price. Assymbly required was to attach seat, handle bars, pedals and front wheel, no big problem. The store even offered free asymbly. Overall a great purchase and great product.

ok for the price, not for the long haul, 12/19/2009
By bikr, jesup, georgia
Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 3 out of 5

i build my bikes, and i'm picky. i bought the gmc denali road bike (large) to use on a trainer, but it will see occasional use on the road as a 'guest' bike. i have plenty of spare parts on hand and so far have replaced the wheelset, tires, brakes, crank, chainring and cassette (53/11), derailleur, saddle, seatpost, pedals (spd) etc with quality parts. next up are bb, stem, dropbar & conversion to 9 speed sti. i already had replacement components and it cost me very little to do this. some of this is complicated, requires special tools, and not for a novice. but its a great way to learn, albeit, the hard way. no matter what you do, the denali will never be a true road bike, because the frame and fork are hybrid by design.

for me, its fun rebuilding this brand new bike, but i would not recommend a novice to buy it. if you dont know how to set a bike up, you'll need to take it to a bike shop where they may tell you it's a piece of junk. and as it comes, it is, but you get what you pay for. for $250, theres a schwinn that looks much better. better yet, spend $500 for a entry level sti bike that will still require set-up. any bike purchased in a box, regardless of cost, requires set-up by a competent mechanic.

the denali comes geared like a mountain bike or hybrid, not a road bike. the frame geometry is odd for a road bike, more like a hybrid with a short top tube for a more upright position. 27.5 lbs out of the box, the large frame standover height is 34" with 700x23 tires that i installed. probably 34.5" with the originals. the denali has a 135mm spread (hybrid spacing) at the rear dropout but comes with a 130mm freewheel hub. as it comes, the rear triangle is squeezed together - this is a no-no with aluminum. so if you want to change the gearing (upgrade to a cassette), you'll have to replace the rear wheel, ideally with a hybrid wheelset as dictated by the dropout spacing. it has a 1" threaded headset which is an old set-up and requires harder to find quill stems, or a conversion adaptor to 1-1/8" unthreaded. the fork is steel and heavy. the supplied brakes flex badly and the brake mounts have to be drilled out to accept modern brakes (long reach) with recessed bolts. the tires/wheels are junk. the stem, handlebar/shifter assembly is bizarre. the cables & housings need to be redone. the manufacturer really struggled to use the cheapest parts/manufacturing possible. in spite of this, it's amazing to me that it could be delivered to my door for less than $200.

i initially tuned the bike as is, and everything worked, but i wouldn't use it that way on the road, or on a trainer. when the transformation is complete, it will be a decent sora/tiagra level bike. but the only original parts will be the frame & fork. as i said, i already had most parts, so little cost to me. if i had to buy the parts, it wouldn't make sense to buy this bike.

as of right now, after replacing the drivetrain, the denali is perfect for use on my trainer, and cost effective in my case. but i would strongly advise newbies to spend more for a decent bike. this one has too many issues. better than nothing though, if its all you can afford. or just want to give biking a shot on the cheap, understanding it's a throwaway bike, not really suitable for upgrading. not a road bike, its a poorly built hybrid with a very strange dropbar and a odd hybrid fork that will be difficult or impossible to upgrade or replace. but it will work as is, if properly set-up. the cables/housings need to be redone and the chain needs to be shortened right off the bat. no cable/housing cutter or chain tool? take it to a bike shop.

if your new to biking, and stick with it, this bike will provide an educational experiance. and you cant beat the price.

my real bike is dura-ace, 60cm, 17lbs, custom built with as much titanium & carbon fiber as i could fit on it. the saddle alone cost $250. on level ground, i can spin it to 30mph+, and i'm 59yo, 6', 215lbs. my normal day ride is a 15mi. time trial on a highway. just to let you know where i'm coming from. hope this is informative.

Great bike, 11/24/2009
By horncastle, Hampton, VA
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I really like this bike. It looks good and rides very well. Nice seat and very nice shifters. Can't understand why you would want to pay more for one. There are only two things that keep me from giving it four stars in all categories. 1) It is a little heavier than I would like, although I can lift it easily with one hand and it is far lighter than most bikes anywhere near this price. 2) I do not like the racing type handlebars, but I knew what I was getting from the pictures. The handlebars do, however, offer three riding positions and came very professionally wrapped. Great bike.

Review 15 for 700C GMC Denali Men's 26" Road Bike

Excellent value for the money, 11/20/2009
By PermanentNick2, Nashville, TN
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I am 6'4", and the bike is quite comfortable for me, but probably it would be more ideal for heights up to 6'1". I have bought the bike a month ago and put 300 miles in it. The gear shift is excellent, the brakes are working as much as a caliper brake can, the frame is well made and sturdy, the seat is OK, the tires are not too good. You have to really know how to take this bike apart when it arrives in the box and put it back together. You absolutely HAVE to adjust the front and the back bearings, they are just too tight when coming off the factory. By default, the nuts securing the bearings are tightened too much, you need good 15 and 17mm wrenches (not included in the box) to loosen it up, and also you want to remove the rear gears, otherwise you cannot adjust the bearings on one side. The pedal mount is OK, but that also needed adjustment. Before I did all this the bearings would give some strange clicks, which is going to kill it eventually. If you cannot do it yourself, then take it to a professional bike shop and tell them to adjust the bearings. Do not expect wonders from this bike, but it is an excellent value for the money.

Review 16 for 700C GMC Denali Men's 26" Road Bike

Great Value, 11/09/2009
By DNrn2009, Tampa, FL
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

The main reason I purchased this bike was the PRICE, plus I liked the colors. So far I am satisfied on my purchase. I have ridden a total 25 miles so far and the bike works well. I am 6’5” and am glad to say this bike fits me perfectly. I have the seat about 3/4ths of the way up and the handle bars at the minimal insertion line. I am not a professional rider but the bike is a great starter bike.

Out of Box:
The majority of the assembly was easy since the back half of the bike was pre-assembled.
After you assemble it you more than likely will need to bring it to a bike shop to have them tune it. The bike was way out of whack I couldn’t even ride it, I had to being it to them because I never adjusted a derailleur before and do not know how to true the wheels. I paid $40 for them to adjust the brakes, adjust derailleur, true the wheels and tighten everything (including what the factory assembled). The previous posts made comments on the brakes. They are acceptable, by that I mean they will stop you but the brakes are cheap, hard plastic so I will soon be upgrading them so I can stop better.

Stuff you should know:
This bike does not include the pedals that you can use cycling shoes (the ones that lock).
Be prepared to make adjustments for the bike to be right.
This bike does not have quick releases for seat and wheels.

Review 17 for 700C GMC Denali Men's 26" Road Bike

Decent Bike, 11/09/2009
By an anonymous customer, Los Angeles, California
Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 3 out of 5

I like the style and weight of this bicycle. However, I am a little unhappy about the position of the brakes. The brakes are on the front end of the curved handlebars, which makes it difficult to reach the brakes when you are riding.

I like to ride sitting straight up and not bent over the bicycle like the professional riders (e.g., Lance Armstrong), so it is difficult to go from that position of sitting up to leaning forward to reach the brakes in a short time. Some bikes have a lever for the brakes near the back end of the curved handlebars, making it easier to reach them from the position I described above.

Otherwise, I like the bike and I expect to put 1,000 miles on it over the next twelve months. So I will update this post then.

So Far So Good, 10/25/2009
By PhillesPhan, atlanta
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I've had the bike a week. I had to assemble it myself as it was site to store, but that was easy. Having ridden mountain bikes for the last decade or so the new riding position took some getting used to, but I had ridden 'road bikes' growing up so it was like... no wait that'd be redundant...
Anyway the bike is solid, the shifters are easy and precise, albeit less than conveniently located if you like to keep your hands near the brakes. The saddle is a bit narrow, and a gel topper makes it quite comfortable for a larger person like myself. I've read reviews elsewhere on the web about how horrible this bike is, heavy, cheap rims..etc, and all I can do is laugh at those around me who paid 400 to several thousand dollars more than I did do do the same exact thing at the same exact speed as I'm doing. If you want a road style bike and don't want it to cost more than a month's car payment, look no further....
