Magic Jack

Magic Jack is a great alternative to a second line, or in my case a work only line where I'd be on the computer anyways. Much cheaper than a typical VoIP account and softphone setup. Or you can still plug a phone into it. People who bash the fact you need a computer obviously don't understand the piece of equipment they just bought. I've used mine for months with no problems. Set up and registration took less than 5 minutes. If you have a good internet connection (sorry, DSL isn't). Plus a typical knowledge of how to install software. Nobody has an excuse to have issue with this great option. People with no technical ability should not buy one.

Bubbly sounding voice, disconnects

I was happy with my first MagicJack, but it normally disconnects me. Now I found out in the news it really disconnects after 3 minutes a secret they kept. The succeeding calls would have terrible sounding voice with static and it bubbles. Now with the new ones, I guess just that, disconnection and bubbles even after only a few seconds...I was so frustrated, I kept a stash of phone cards. Now I am back with the phone company. I will be moving back to Cable VOIP. Problem with that and magicjack? If you loose power, you loose power to your router, you will no longer have phone service, unlike the phone company. Learned that from the last snow storm that cut our power for 3 days...I know, the other company's product is more expensive, but believe me, it is worth it. I you don't, don't blame me that I did not warn you. You know what they say about you get what you pay for? This one is not even the money you paid for it...

Wanted to transfer a phone number. It wouldn't go through, so I had to get a new number. They charged me another $10 to get a new number when they couldn't transfer the number even though it says they can transfer old numbers. Tried to resolve it with technical support and they wouldn't do anything. They pointed me to their terms of service agreement. I read them back their own terms of service where it says they can transfer old numbers, and they hung up on me. It is a good idea, but you cannot use a fax machine. You cannot call some phone numbers because they don't have an agreement with the service. Sometimes the call sounds good, sometimes it's lousy. It states there is caller id. That rarely works too. You get what you pay for.

I have a magicjack for 6 month which I could not use at least once in spite of my hundred of hours spent chating over the internet with their people;every time you start cheating you'll get a message after 20'-30' saying now I'll transfer you to one of our top 10 customer rep and in the end you get noting solved;I was so stupid and I bought a second one thinking that first one was wrong from factory, so I got the new MajicjackPlus which is still unused since I bought it 2 month ago;again I wasted a lot of hours over a couple of days in chating, but for nothing other than promises of feedback or emails which never came to me by email or either way;so my advice stay away of these guys, probably I should start from the begining with Nettalk.

My device is almost 5 months old. It already stopped working. Incoming calls are logged but doesn't ring (through my phone or through the computer but displays as a missed call. Unable to get dial tone for outgoing calls. Customer support after multiple troubleshooting attempts suggested I purchase a new updated more expensive unit. DO NOT fall for this gismo you will loose out eventually. When I first purchased the MJ I wondered why so many people complained about their unit as mine worked fine. Only to find out, without changing software, computer, or phones (but testing multiple phones) the all their complaints were accurate. DO NOT buy this device. Give the money to charity instead.

Website misleads

I checked the magic jack website to see if it would work for a fax line and it said that it would, so I went out to buy the magic jack plus. I am on my third day now going back and forth between the magic jack chat box and Epson customer support. The magic jack chat support is now telling me that most faxes usually don't work. They should have stated that on the website, rather than saying, Quote- from site "It should work fine. Plug your fax machne into your magicJack, just as you would normally connect your fax machine to your telephone jack.
You just cost me at least 10-15 hours of down time trying to get something running that your support team already knew was not going to work.

I was skeptcal about this at first, can't always believe what you see on tv. But, so far, so great! Quick and easy to install; clear sounding calls; and I can reach family and friends back in the US for nothing more than $20 a year. Very impressed and pleased. As long as you have a solid internet connection, you're good to go.

Magic Junk-Buyer Beware-You Get What You Pay For

12/26/2011
By reviewerforhire

If it sounds too good to be true then it is!! "100% risk free - you pay nothing" is NOT TRUE, you WILL pay shipping if you do not like the product and send it back... you WILL NOT be reimbursed.
The Magic Junk/Jack website does not allow you to check online to see if phone numbers for the city you live in are supported by Magic Jack... I found out - after I received the product - during the registration process, that they could not provide me with a phone number for my city. I then plugged a phone into Magic Junk Plus and discovered a radio station broadcasting in the background while I was trying to talk and listen to the person on the other end of the call. I tried numerous phone calls to different people and got the same radio broadcast in the background.
From their website (NOT TRUE)
"magicJack PLUS service has received rave reviews and many people think it is the best Call Quality they have ever heard. The magicJack PLUS has added High Definition Voice. Best Call Quality and it's FREE."
I went back to the website to get an RMA (to return the device before my 30 day "free" trial)... I contacted a Magic Jack site representative using the live chat function on the website and was told I had to pay for shipping the device back and would NOT be reimbursed.
Here's the conversation (which went on for over two hours due to the representatives attempting every way to dodge the actual complaint), but I will capture it in a few lines to save time:
Dissatisfied Customer: I am returning the Magic Jack that was sent to me... I have the RMA and the return address.... how will I be reimbursed for shipping?
Molly: You are responsible for return shipping. Equipment returned without a valid RMA number will not be eligible for the magicJack Money Back Guarantee.
Dissatisfied Customer: I have a valid RMA number Molly.... The free trial states "100% risk free - you pay nothing" ... so why am I responsible for return shipping? The magic jack does not work as advertised and there are no numbers for the city I live in...

Not for senior citizens

Big problems: 1. Voice mail picks up after only three rings, and the ring count cannot be changed.
2. The voice mail cannot be disabled. I cannot use my own answering machine unless I set it for two rings or less.
3. As a senior citizen we need longer ring times to get to the phone before the MagicJack voice mail takes over. MagicJack’s help line says they cannot change it.
Unless you can jump when the phone rings stay away from this product

This was given to me as a gift about 2.5 years ago. Have exchanged it several times since, before finally returning it last month.
When it works (which isn't all of the time), there is an echo problem, static. Often the person on the other end can't make out most of what I am saying, and I can't make out a lot of what they are saying.
For some reason, it does not permit calls to conference calls, which I need to make daily (there is nothing special about these numbers, but for some reason, MagicJack (and Google talk) does not permit calls to them).
I was pretty excited to get this as a gift, but it isn't worth the $40, that's for sure.
For the last couple of years, Google has offered a similar service ... for free (for now) through gmail.com. Same TYPE of service, but MUCH better quality, fewer dropped calls, and it's FREE.

Good Bye Costly Traditional Phone Companies

I bought, installed and started using the Magic Jack from September 24, 2011. It is really like a magic in every aspect. Installation is so simple and fast that it does everything flawlessly on it's own once we connect it to PC USB port on one end and to Telephone Unit on the other end. It is ready for use in just a couple of minutes. New Magic Jacks do work with Windows 7 OS. Phone quality is simply superb even on using a Cordless Telephone that is kept very close to PC CPU. Of course I am using 5.8 GHz Vtech unit. Voice quality is very nice and there is absolutely no break-up. Initially I had the problem of very feeble volume due to which I could not use the phone. But after a couple of days, I suddenly realized that there is a 2nd Volume Mixer popping up on clicking the SPEAKER icon on my PC's Tool bar for which volume level was at 20 or 30. I changed it to max. i.e. 100 and left it there permanently. That is it, the problem of feeble volume has vanished like magic. (The other mixer is for PC's speaker). In my view everyone may happily abandon Traditional Phone Companies phones and go for Magic Jack since it costs just less than $2.00 per month for unlimited long distance calling (US, Canada & Puerto Rico) including 911, free 411, voice mail etc.. Before Magic Jack, I used Vonage VoIP phone and struggled one full year working patiently with them to fix the problem of horrible breaking-up of voice which made it almost impossible to use the phone. But I paid a total monthly bill of $33 for full one year until I closed my A/c. (Ever increasing monthly bill that reached $33 staring around $24 or so). I shall mention that I am using 50 MBPS Cable Broad band connection.

I don't know how this thing works, it may be great but... The idea for this is to get a landline for my home, we just moved here. The closest number I can get within my area code is 200 miles away, would be long distance, and defeats the purpose of the MJ in the first place.

Quick set up and clear call quality. The only things I don't like about the Magic Jack is that you have keep your computer on constantly in order to use it like a regular telephone line and the fact that the USB portion broke off. I will be returning it to the store and trying the Net Duo instead since you can plug that up to your router so you don't have to leave the computer on all the time in order to receive phone calls.
