The company is now blocking calls that worked previosly to have you buy prepaid credits to call, to include 800 numbers and teleconference numbers. Do bot buy unless you want to pay additional fees after you 30 refund policy is done. Wish I would of kept walmart receipt to return.

Don't hesitate. I cancelled my "real" phone account and have saved over $45 a month for a year now. Obviously, when you have a power outage you lose your phone (the downside), but we use cordless phones anyway and would run out of battery in a few hours just the same! Have recommended it to several friends and they are also saving money and very happy!

Setup and registration was pretty painless, I think it took less than 5 minutes. I picked a free number, but I like how they have different options for number selection. My wife is a stay at home mom, and the magicjack is her lifeline, she uses it every day. Make sure you have a good, fast internet connection and you should be good to go. magicjack has saved our small family a lot of money on home phone service.

I was spending over $200 on my home phone bill until I discovered Magic Jack! At 65 years old I'm set in my ways and not very tech savvy, so I was kind of nervous. The registration was so simple even I could do it. I haven't experienced any problems and I'm saving a bunch of money.

This is an updated review Oct/2012
Now there is a new version called the Magicjack PLUS, with the new Magicjack plus you no longer need to have it connected to a computer. The new Magicjack Plus plug's directly into any standard house outlet (110v) and modem or router. Installation and set-up is quick and easy, this was important for me because I wanted something for my 78 year old mother to use, with the Magicjack plus my mother just pick's up her normal telephone and dial's or answers calls as usual, no hassle's and nothing complicated. The savings is fantastic, no more long distance calls to pay, and now with the new Magicjack plus you can keep your old telephone number and transfer that number onto your magicjack. Magicjack PLUS now comes with a NO RISK "try before you buy" option. Customer support is always there to help you if needed, I highly recommend this product, I have had mine now for almost a year and have had no problems. I highly recommend this product. There are two versions, the magisjack USB (needs to be connected to a computer) and the Magicjack PLUS, this version does NOT need to be connected to a computer.
note: I am not affiliated with Magicjack or the company what so ever, I am just a customer who has purchased their product and have great service with the Magicjack PLUS.

Works OK until you have a problem they can't fix.

We bought a MagicJack Plus in November 2011. The first issue is that they say "New! No computer needed!", but that's not true; you have to have a computer to set it up and since I use Linux instead of Windows on my laptop, that's a problem. They try to say that they disclose the fact it doesn't work with Linux, but on their ad page there's nothing that indicates that nor is there an asterisk or caveat or further links to a page where that's disclosed. After days of trying to get it set up, I finally got it working and it worked OK until October 2012 when it suddenly wouldn't drop the dial tone when you tried dialing.
MagicJack is a phone company with NO phone support! If you have a problem, you have to get online and try to get a "Live Agent", not an easy proposition. Also, their agents don't comprehend English well, so when you have a problem that they don't run into regularly or is off their script, they're lost. They know very little to nothing about how the product works or computers. When you get one, regardless of what you say or do, they want you to disconnect everything and reconnect it, despite the fact that you've done it over and over. When they run into a problem that they can't fix or are unfamiliar with, they simply disconnect chat and you're left to either try to get another agent, who will tell you to disconnect everything and reconnect it, or to just try to figure it out on your own.
When you've been through that several times - 9 in my case - and try to find someone to actually talk to, they refuse to give you a telephone number to call and disconnect saying that you're not cooperating. If you get escalated to a "supervisor" - or what they call one of their "top 10% agents as rated by our customers", it must be a joke in their company since those people will try to make the problem anyone's but theirs. They'll want to log onto your computer remotely (I don't think so!) or bring up your wireless router's interface (again, I don't think so!), anything but fix the MagicJack. They kept telling me that my router was down or that my internet wasn't working, but I tried - unsuccessfully - to get across to them that we were chatting on that very connection at that moment and it clearly was working. They disconnected chat. If you ask too many questions, they disconnect chat. If you point out that you've already disconnected the MagicJack and reconnected it 8 times, they disconnect chat. If you follow their instructions to the letter and it doesn't work, they disconnect chat.
When I searched online for a telephone number for MagicJack, I got many, none of which actually call into their office. I finally found a number for MagicJack on the West Palm Beach, Florida, BBB website, called it, and they wouldn't help me because they only handle billing. Their "live agents" kept telling me that they were located at a West Palm Beach PO box. Yes, a PO box. I kept asking how that's possible but they didn't understand my question. Coupling that to the fact that they have such a poor command of English tells me that they're probably not located in the US, after all.
So, we're out the $70 and we've gone back to our phone company.
I would buy 2 tin cans and a giant ball of string before I'd ever touch this company's product again.

EXTREMELY POOR SERVICE

I purchased 5 MAGICJACK units, 1 for myself, and 4 for my children and friends. The first year application was okay, but there was no way for continued service because my children, friends and I could not purchas second year serivce from the store (such as Walmart, Bust Buy). The only place where you can purchase the continued service is from www.magicjack.com, but there is no real person for you to talk to, and continued service could not be purchased. Accordingly all my purchased 5 MAGICJACK units have become junks. Do not make the same mistakes. Do not trust them that the service charge is only $19.95 per year. Another technical problem is that the unit works only when my computer is on.

MJ will cut your service and take your money!

Our 2 year old got ahold of a phone and randomly punched buttons. This is ONE long string, not distinct telephone numbers punctuated by flash or even '1's. We had only a few months ago signed up for FIVE years of pre-paid service. This is one event, over the course of a few minutes. That's it. The numbers in the logs were not real phone numbers in the way THEY broke the single string of one number apart, just random digits that do not go anywhere.
They abruptly and without warning disconnected our service and kept our money. Attempts to resolve this with their customer service was brushed off.
DO NOT DEAL WITH THESE PEOPLE. THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY.

Magic Jack

Magic Jack is a great alternative to a second line, or in my case a work only line where I'd be on the computer anyways. Much cheaper than a typical VoIP account and softphone setup. Or you can still plug a phone into it. People who bash the fact you need a computer obviously don't understand the piece of equipment they just bought. I've used mine for months with no problems. Set up and registration took less than 5 minutes. If you have a good internet connection (sorry, DSL isn't). Plus a typical knowledge of how to install software. Nobody has an excuse to have issue with this great option. People with no technical ability should not buy one.

Bubbly sounding voice, disconnects
,

I was happy with my first MagicJack, but it normally disconnects me. Now I found out in the news it really disconnects after 3 minutes a secret they kept. The succeeding calls would have terrible sounding voice with static and it bubbles. Now with the new ones, I guess just that, disconnection and bubbles even after only a few seconds...I was so frustrated, I kept a stash of phone cards. Now I am back with the phone company. I will be moving back to Cable VOIP. Problem with that and magicjack? If you loose power, you loose power to your router, you will no longer have phone service, unlike the phone company. Learned that from the last snow storm that cut our power for 3 days...I know, the other company's product is more expensive, but believe me, it is worth it. I you don't, don't blame me that I did not warn you. You know what they say about you get what you pay for? This one is not even the money you paid for it...

Wanted to transfer a phone number. It wouldn't go through, so I had to get a new number. They charged me another $10 to get a new number when they couldn't transfer the number even though it says they can transfer old numbers. Tried to resolve it with technical support and they wouldn't do anything. They pointed me to their terms of service agreement. I read them back their own terms of service where it says they can transfer old numbers, and they hung up on me. It is a good idea, but you cannot use a fax machine. You cannot call some phone numbers because they don't have an agreement with the service. Sometimes the call sounds good, sometimes it's lousy. It states there is caller id. That rarely works too. You get what you pay for.

I have a magicjack for 6 month which I could not use at least once in spite of my hundred of hours spent chating over the internet with their people;every time you start cheating you'll get a message after 20'-30' saying now I'll transfer you to one of our top 10 customer rep and in the end you get noting solved;I was so stupid and I bought a second one thinking that first one was wrong from factory, so I got the new MajicjackPlus which is still unused since I bought it 2 month ago;again I wasted a lot of hours over a couple of days in chating, but for nothing other than promises of feedback or emails which never came to me by email or either way;so my advice stay away of these guys, probably I should start from the begining with Nettalk.

My device is almost 5 months old. It already stopped working. Incoming calls are logged but doesn't ring (through my phone or through the computer but displays as a missed call. Unable to get dial tone for outgoing calls. Customer support after multiple troubleshooting attempts suggested I purchase a new updated more expensive unit. DO NOT fall for this gismo you will loose out eventually. When I first purchased the MJ I wondered why so many people complained about their unit as mine worked fine. Only to find out, without changing software, computer, or phones (but testing multiple phones) the all their complaints were accurate. DO NOT buy this device. Give the money to charity instead.

Website misleads

I checked the magic jack website to see if it would work for a fax line and it said that it would, so I went out to buy the magic jack plus. I am on my third day now going back and forth between the magic jack chat box and Epson customer support. The magic jack chat support is now telling me that most faxes usually don't work. They should have stated that on the website, rather than saying, Quote- from site "It should work fine. Plug your fax machne into your magicJack, just as you would normally connect your fax machine to your telephone jack.
You just cost me at least 10-15 hours of down time trying to get something running that your support team already knew was not going to work.
