My 11 year old daughter went to Lego camp this past summer. And this was a must have for Christmas. This is NOT your typical Lego set, Make sure the user is tech savvy. Requires some user programming on the computer control module. But the computer to module interface is fairly simple for an 11 year old to perform. But also rememer my 11 year old is the only one in my house that can program my DVD player.

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter. She was asking a lot of questions about how computers work and how to program them. I had introdcued her to some level of programming but thought the interactive nature of the Mindstorms would be helpful in getting the concepts across. I was very pleased at how quickly she got her first "program" written without my help. From there, I was able to show her some more advanced constructs (looping, conditionals) working from her base. Within an hour, we had a robot configured and a program written to find a wall, turn around once there, and play a different sound based on how long it took to find the wall. I wasn't allowed to work on the keyboard much because my daughter was so excited to make it her own... just perfect. Excited and learning. Can't ask for more than that from an inquisitive 10 year old.

I was so excited when I got the Mindstorms. It was a gift for my child and one my brother-in-law, who is an electrical engineer, recommended. He has had one for awhile now. It is educational but also a toy that can be enjoyed for years to come. Hope LEGO can keep up and make more pieces that will work with this set!

The Walmart price is the best around for this kit. The kit arrived in excellent condition, all parts, sealed box exactly as ordered. You can find the kit selling for a good $100 higher in retail stores and elsewhere.

The Lego kit itself is a great learning adventure. There are robotics clubs and classes in middle schools and high schools across the US that use the exact same stuff to teach both beginning programming and robotics. The software installs easily and the interface to the Lego controller is easy. The programming language is fast to learn and kids love to see how the instructions that they program into the controller are quickly executed by their robot. Highly recommended product.

My first shipment did not show up and Walmart rush shipped a replacement. Happy to have a ten year old entertained with this multi-project toy. This toy is only limited by the imagination and my son still has plenty of that to go. Happy with the purchase and very satisfied with Walmart customer service. Thanks Walmart !!

My son-in-law, an engineer, collects Lego products (especially unique new ones). Now age 31, he has continued this collection since childhood. The Lego Mindstorm N
XT 2.0 appeared much more intricate (and "mind-blowing" if you wil) than it actually was. It is quite small, and is not as "cool" as appearing in advertisements. Was a let-down for us after spending almost $300.00! Note: WalMart did their part flawlessly and with very minimal effort on our part.

I bought this for my 8 year old grandson, even though it says it is for 10+ years. He has been working on it for less than 2 weeks and is doing great. He is especially enjoying the challenge and that he isn't done with it in 30-45 minutes. I chose this Lego set so that he can change things up and grow with it. The computer programming and some of the projects will stimulate his mind, and yet still be lots of fun for years to come. Walmart also had this item at an amazing price before Christmas and I thank you for that, plus the item was delivered in less 5 days after I ordered it on the internet. Thanks for the Great Deal!!

This is an excellence product for the price. I wasn't happy about the cheap cardboard box it was mailed in. It did not survive getting mailed to me. Plastic bags broke open, lego pieces all came out. Not all pieces arrived.
Poor shipping for what I paid for. Mail order from someone else.

Purchased for my son, 12. He had taken a summer camp several years ago for Lego Mindstorms and really enjoyed it. I had been looking at this product for a while, and decided it would make for a great gift this year. My son loved getting it, and has been building robots for several hours a day since he received it. I like that you can "merge" additional sets to make bigger robots, and will consider buying an additional set for this reason. I also like that there are idea books available, for when he tires of building the robots that are suggested with the manual, and runs out of his own creation ideas. ( FYI, there is a forum on the lego website for mindstorm users, that might be useful) I give this an A+.

I bought my 9 year old son this same exact set last year for Xmas. He quickly outgrew the potential of the set and has been begging for another CPU block and hardware, so I bought another complete set for him this Xmas so he can continue his mad scientist robot projects. The quality of NXT is right on par with all Lego products, that being excellent. Wal-Mart had the best price on this set from all the on-line retailers I checked, beating the price by $50 in most instances. However, I believe if Lego would lower the price on NXT this would allow others with less means to introduce their children to the wonderful world of programming, engineering and robotics. In reality this is just a simple PIC wrapped in traditional Lego plastic and the actual cost to produce this is probably significantly lower than the retail asking price. All-in-all however this is a great present to give your child if they have any curiosity in science, particularly the engineering sciences.

In the mid 1980's I entered a college program in robotics technology, I continued on to work in the field of robotics travelling the world and enjoyed utilizing my knowledge and skills while earning a great income. Many years later my young brother and his wife in Kansas City,had their first child a boy. I purchased this for him my nephew. He is 8 years old, the photos of his joy, and excitement with qoutes from my brother were sent to me via smartphone and very soon awesome photos \video of my nephew's projects with the kit all within a 3 day weekend.
This kit for under $300.00 can teach a young person so much that I learned my first two years studying full time thousands of dollars in college micro-electronics, physics, mechanical\electronic engineering, computer programming. The design, and creativity this kit brings out in people is awesome.... brilliant product.
I ordered this on Walmart.com living in Portland , OR having it shipped to my nephew in Kansas City MO at his father's small family owned sign shop , having it sent to the shop and my nephew getting a package at Dad's shop was a fun experience for him.
Im am a very proud uncle of a very , happy , little man growing up , playing and becoming a creative\scientific intelligent minded person at the same time.

We bought this for our 11 year old son for Christmas after careful thought, due to the price. He loved it and started building and programming right away. He had experience at first Lego league at school, but still finds some of the building and programming difficult, so it's nice to have an adult in the house who can help out. We also recommend the Bluetooth dongle. Overall, it is really neat and lots of fun.

Our two boys have LOVED Legos since nearly birth. I like them as a mother, since I can see their creativity bubbling, and their minds being challenged. They have spent countless hours with them... but lately (ages 10 and 12) prefer to do the Star Wars Lego series. This is fine--they are definitely still thinking--but at between $60 and $100 per piece, it's expensive. Plus, the joy is in following the instructions and creating the item. Then they don't want to take it apart and start over.
Our hope was that this would help them in continuing to play and interact. And this has been true... although the 12 year old (who had Lego Mindstorms in school) is much more excited than the 10 year old. There is a learning curve to it.
It's pricey... but not in comparison to how many hours they "should' get out of this instead of a one-shot construction project.

Santa brought this for my 9 yr old son, its all he asked for, for Christmas. He loves it, and is able to be occupied for hours and hours at a time, wakes early in the morning to go start a new "bot". He is very smart with science and math, and I think this helps him, however, I think it is reasonable for his age group. This "toy" however, would be entertaining for kids and adults alike. My husband has really enjoyed playing with it as well.

My 10-year old daughter had taken a short class using Lego NXT and asked for one for Christmas. The NXT 2 system is drastically more affordable.
She had a grand time building and programming one of the robots - and then working to customize the programming to add/change functions she wanted.

I bought this for a 6th grader. I wish I had gotten it for him earlier.
I had gotten it for him about 6 weeks ago as an early Christmas gift and he's been playing with it ever since. The CD the product comes with has instructions for building 3 models and there seems to be lots of models that can be built if you search on the web.
I like the fact that this can be turned into many different toys. Once the child gets tired of playing with one, he can build a different one. I also like the fact that the kid has to think about how to get the things he builds to work and also debug when it does not turn out the way he wants it.
The price is a bit steep though.
