An ok Blu-Ray player
05/04/2010
Like I said this is an ok player. It plays the blu-ray as well as regular dvds very good.
It takes a minute for it to read and load a blu-ray disc, but that may be normal for this model.
It does NOT up-convert regular dvd's. However, your HDTV should make the picture of such... (reg. dvd's sharper etc.)
The fact of the matter is...No Blu-Ray player can up-convert regular dvd's. That's just the way it is.
Of course they say they can, but it's just a lie to "push the sale." Even the older movies Pre HI DEF that are being released on Blu-Ray is more or less like the VHS to DVD transfer . A bit of touch up on color and sound but that's it. They can't redo a non HI-DEF into such. Back to the review of this PIONEER Blu-Ray player...
When I purchased this the product the listing said it will play DVD-R's which is completely false. CD-R's do play though. So, the listing may or may not be updated according to such specifications.
Overall, I haven't had any problem with playing DVD's. Blu-Ray & regular with crisp, quality picture and sound etc. etc. and for the price (unless it's went up higher than I paid-$98.00 + tax & S&H) total of $108-$109. Then it is worth it, if all you want/need is a Blu-Ray player.

excellent BD player
05/09/2010
Pioneer makes media players that are easy to use, understand and do what they are designed to do in this case play discs...ALL discs, many players won't play home recorded discs. or PAL. This Pioneer like my first one plays everything when others won't and I know I have 4 players in my house. It loads fast to. This is a great player at any price. It does have a network connection however it is only for updating and will not stream from places like netflix. I dont do streaming yet anyway so this was not important. The updating is!!! From Blue ray to dvd(it DOES upconvert) to home dvds you cannot go wrong with this player.

Excellent player
05/16/2010
I've been a big fan of Pioneer electronic equipment for years (even our Pioneer DVD/LD combo 909 player is still going strong) and the BDP-120 FD is further proof why I stick with the brand. Hooking it up to our Samsung DLP 50" is simply plugging in the cable (HDMI in this case). Fast load (also depends on the disc - Warner discs usually load the fastest in our experience so far), incredible picture quality (standard DVDs have a strong bump in picture quality as well), and booming sound ... this machine makes movie-watching at home even a stronger pleasant experience than going to the unruly multiplex.

Nice, but no thanks
04/17/2010
A great price, on an OK player.
First, let me say that it Played an actual Blu ray disc very well. So if that is all that you are looking for in a BD player, this is it !
The upconversion of a regular dvd ( using HDMI connection) was OK. Not great, just OK.
The disappointing part was that the ethernet connection is ONLY for use with BD Live features. NOT for firmware updates. If you want to update the machines' firmware, you need a PC and a flashdrive (supplied) .......
I returned this and purchased a panasonic.

Great product/value
01/10/2010
I had never owned a Blu-Ray until now and was hesitant to stick a lot of money into one without knowing whether it was compatible with my stereo & tv. No worries as the many options on how to connect it for optimal sound and picture, made it more than worth the great price!
I've always been a bit cynical on picture quality and thought there was no difference from one to the next... but this proved me wrong in just seconds. Absolutely fabulous - and I'm using it with old DVDs!

Great BluRay Player
05/03/2010
I am very impressed with this player. BluRays look awesome on my 1080p television. Has many of the extra features available on much more expensive players. I've owned many Pioneer products in the past and am confident this unit will perform and last as long as all my other Pioneer products. I would definately recommend this player at this price to anyone looking to upgrade to BluRay. Just make sure you attach it with a HDMI cable to a 1080p TV for the full effects of BluRay.

Great Value
01/14/2010
One of the best prices anywhere for name brand. It did require a HDMI cable to hook up for best picture, bot other than that, no additional cost involved. Great performance, great picture. Plays Blue Ray and Standard DVD's. This is our first Blue Ray, so I can not compare it to others, but from what we have experienced, it produces great picture even when playing DVD's. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting to get into the Blue Ray era.

a great affordable blu ray player. it includes a free 1 gig flash drive to make it easier to update the firmware in the player. the picture and sound are terrific! the only drawback is the disc load times, but ive found thats normal for all the blu ray players ive had experience with. i highly recommend this player. it also upconverts standard dvds to a higher quality picture, so i use it with my dvd library too.
