BEST DEAL OF THE NEW YEAR!!!
01/30/2010
This player delivered came to $118.00. That is incredible to get a blu-ray of this quality for that price. THE PERSON THAT STATED THIS PLAYER DOES NOT UPCONVERT DVDS TO 1080 DID NOT HAVE THIS CONNECTED WITH AN HDMI CABLE!!! This DOES upconvert and makes DVDs look great, blu-rays are beautiful too. Que up time for blu-rays is about medium slow. faster than my Samsung, but not mu $600 Denon.
Don't miss this deal!!!

Pioneer Blu-ray BDP-120FD
11/16/2009
Knowing this product had such a low price ($148), I expected it not to be stellar, but have been over all fairly happy. It is missing auto-resume (picking up where you last left off on DVD or Blu-ray), which is a bummer as I find I used this feature a lot on my old DVD player. Also missing is the ability to upconvert standard DVDs to 720P, 1080i, or 1080P, which is a pretty significant short-coming for a Blu-ray player at any price point; the best this player will do is play DVDs at 480P.
These quibbles aside, for the price the player is very nice. The Blu-ray start up time is slow, but not any slower than most other low-end or midrange players. Playback on my 55" 1080i rear projection CRT TV (old school, I know) is wonderful, though. The colors are vibrant and the resolution is crisp, yet still maintains the softness of 35mm movie film.
Upon first use I did have to manually change the player settings to output at 1080i resulution over the component video out -- for whatever reason the player's factory setting for component video out defaults to 480P, even when playing Blu-ray discs. I also had to manually change the audio settings for the optical audio out to output in true 5.1 channel surround -- again, the factory settings were set at the lowest possible level (basic stereo). But for those of you that will hook the player up to your TV/audo system via HDMI, the player will automatically output video and audio at the highest settings your system handles (1080P, for example, if your TV can natively disply at that resolution).
The lack of upconverting standard DVDs to hi-def resolutions, and the lack of the auto-resume feature, merits only three out of five stars for an overall rating. But after factoring in the great picture quality at 1080i resolution, and the rediculously low price, four out of five stars is the final verdict.
For a basic Blu-ray player that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, this Pioneer player is a good value for the performance and features.

Great Value
03/31/2010
For some time now I have been shopping around for a blu-ray player. I was recently in Wal-mart and saw that they had a sony and samsung rollback for $128 dollars. I almost bought one, but had money in my paypal acct. and decided to by online with free shipping site to store. Looking at other blu-ray players I noticed this pioneer for $ 108. I grew up with pioneer stereo's and know how reliable they are and what a good reputation they have. I read the reviews and decided to buy one. I just finished watching Transformers on blu-ray and the picture was excellent. I have a toshiba 1080p and I hooked the player up with a hdmi cable, took less than 10 minutes. Also it loaded the movie in about 30 seconds. I read some reviews where people said they had to manually change the video setting, I guess mine is set up with new software because it has an auto feature. I did check it manually and it was on 1080p. I feel like I got a great deal for the money, and saved about $40 to $50 on a comparable player. Also note I have not tried to watch a standard movie yet, and did not hook up to the internet. Thanks

Great Value Blue Ray
11/26/2009
Player takes just as long as any other blue ray to load. Lots of options and great picture for the price. Need to use hdmi connection to get best picture. Take the time to update the player and set up the options correctly.

Good Player
03/21/2010
Reasonably-priced BD player with all key features, universal remote, small form factor. LAN, HDMI, Optical out and USB (for firmware management primarily, though it does work for JPEGs, too). Came with a free USB flash drive (SanDisc). Pairs perfectly with my 42" LCD 1080p 120Hz TV.
Of note is that not ALL TVs have a full multi-channel pass-though channel (5.1 or 7.1 digital OUT), so you have the choice of buying a new receiver with HDMI multi-link (even a basic one is about $240, while the GOOD ones are about $300 - $500) or - like me - you can get a BD that had HDMI -and- Optical out. The trick is to set the player to disable HDMI AUDIO or to enable BOTH HDMI -and- Optical (Digital) out. I recommend disabling the HDMI audio and TV speakers (who wants two small, cheap, weak speakers when you have six or eight high-performance ones?) and letting your receiver have the entire sound signal through optical.
As for the playback, it is great with any DVD - BD or not - and there are more than enough settings to tweak it to your TV, be it plasma, LCD or LED. I suspect that this player would even look pretty good on a CRT TV, though there would be very little point to doing that.
Multiple video out and audio out makes this a versatile and capable system. Being small and light means it won't waste limited space in the current gen of home entertainment cabinets, and the HDMI and/or optical out reduce the wiring needed to support the electronics. Basically, this is an excellent deal. And, it is a Pioneer, so you know it works.

Stick with Reg. DVD
11/02/2009
I have been dying for a Blu-Ray player so I ordered this one....it took forever for the movies to start...& some new movies would not play at all, even after downloading the new firmware.....I found the player to be very frustrating.....& the picture & sound quality were not any better than my progressive scan DVD player so I returned it to the store......

Just bought end of Oct. hooked it up today (Nov.13) to my home theatre system (InFocus projector) thru an HDMI 1.3a cable handshaking protocol from Pioneer unit would not recognize projector. Tried multiple configurations (no difference) Took it back and bought a Vizio VBR100. Hooked it up, recognized projector right away. No muss no fuss.
Also of note: if you buy this unit be sure to check firmware version before running This unit's firmware was dated 3 months previous. NOT current at all.

Blu Ray makes me happy!!
05/05/2010
Having never owned a blu ray player before I went off the reviews of others to deside to purchase this one. I have been happy from the moment I hooked it up. It plays all my regular DVD's and makes them look better than they ever did.
The version of firmware was, like you would expect, not the latest version so I tried to download the latest version and use the usb flash drive that came with the player to update it. I tried several times then I gave up and just ordered the updated version online from Pioneer and am now waiting to receive it.
Other than the firmware thing not being something I was able to do I believe anyone wanting a extremely good blu ray player could do a lot worse.
Saying all that, good luck to those of you still looking to buy a player and are not sure to trust the opinion of other's.
