For those looking for a war movie that doesn't quite take the perspective of soldiers on the battlefront, here is a movie just for you. Instead of being war machines with guns a'blazing full of fantastical effects and super stunts, here is a less glamorous looking approach to war. Without ruining the movie, the film features men as prisoners of war, seeking freedom and their lives back. You witness the fruits of their teamwork and brainpower. As ordinary men utilizing their resources to the fullest, they display a courage that is rare amongst men not just today but in any day.
I was pleased to see what type of tactics they used, and how each plan played out to the very end. The fact that this film is based on a real event makes it all the more appealing. Director Sturges did a wonderful job capturing the humanity in each soldier and portraying each of their individual characteristics.
If you're not looking for your mundane guns, explosives, and fat bombs blowing up every five minutes of the movie, here's your ticket. It is a Must See movie for those war/POW movie fans who just are tired of all the hype and jazz in war movies today.
