The blade opening assist is extremely clumsy and actually requires more thumb effort than non-assisted models from other manufacturers. The assist lockout makes the knife even more difficult to operate. The standard blade is only openable from the right hand and the sheepsfoot blade is only openable with the left hand. The assist mechanism takes up one whole side of the multitool, leaving only one side for accessories. Usually both halves of the handle have accessories within. The standard SOG multitool is great and to abandon it for the new assist model would be a mistake.

i researched many different multi-tools and considered leatherman multi-tools. i decided on the SOG because of the power assist blades and the smooth action of the pliers. after checking out a friends comparably priced leatherman i decided the SOG was the beter buy... im glad i did it is a great, well build tool that in my opinion is better than a leatherman.

I have always been a Gerber fan until seeing the SOG on a local TV station. I now have one of my own and am delighted. Great bit of kit, sturdy and well made, at a reasonable price also. Easy to use and open. The power assist does get easier as it is used and it frees up the mechanism.
