Great Blue Ray Player!, 09/12/2009
By robsew, Richland, MS
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

So far the player has performed flawlessly. I had it connected in no time flat. There are several more options in the setup that I'm not used to, since this is my first Blue Ray player. I haven't tried everything that this player is supposed to do, but for what I use it for (watching movies) it is great.

Love this Blu Ray player its amazing. It look really great and has alot to offer! Plays the movies great and its very fast and responsive and does not freeze or gets hot like other ones. Easy to set up and the controls are not as hard but does get some getting use to. If your looking for just a blu ray player then buy this one but if you like to do more with a blu ray player then get sony's PS3 witch is GREAT!!!

Great Blu-ray player!, 08/26/2009
By Watermaker, Southeast Louisiana
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I have successfully played Blu-ray discs, standard DVDs and a DVD+R that I recorded myself all without problems and without updating the firmware. The picture on my 42 inch HDTV is fantastic, as is the sound. So there's no "EJECT" on the remote - so what? So you have to stand up an extra two seconds when you change discs - come on, people! This is a great product - I highly recommend it.

This is a good one for the video hobbyist, 08/03/2009

Anyone who has an HD camcorder and wants to watch the footage on an HDTV needs a BD player which will play AVCHD format. AVCHD is essentially a "Blu-Ray Lite", in that it is Blu-Ray structure on a standard DVD recordable. Allowable bitrate is not so high as Blu-Ray, but currently at ~ 17 Mb/sec it is fully adequate.

Not all BD players will play AVCHD, this one will. Sony probably supports AVCHD because they also sell HD cams, as do Panasonic and LG. Support from other manufacturers is near non-existent.

Many HD camcorders currently use the h264 codec, because it is a very efficient and requires much less bitrate/space than the preceding standard MPEG-2 (DVD standard also). Many camcorders can play directly to an HDTV through HDMI. But one must then edit and save the footage. HD cams may or may not come with appropriate software for this.

There are free tools available to edit and re-encode to AVCHD, available for example at videohelp.com. Of course, one could buy a Blu-Ray burner and blanks, but as yet these are very expensive, so AVCHD is a good option. Many people have DVD burners in their home computers. Again, the allowable bitrate is perfectly adequate for full HD and runtime can be as much as two hours before quality suffers noticeably.

Anyway, this is a very good player. I could nit-pick and say the player's options are somewhat counter-intuitive. One gets used to the idiosyncratic way Sony lays out their controls, however.

This amp is excellent so far. The only disadvantage for me is fact that you cannot eject a disc using the remote control, otherwise it's great. gman

Sony still excellent, 07/04/2009

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I bought the Sony bdp-s360 from Walmart in response to buying a refurbished unit from another retailer for 1/3 the price that failed to turn on in the first week.

Had no problems setting up the Sony. I don't miss the 'eject' button on the remote from prior models since I have to get up to change blu-ray discs at the player, anyway.

I like the 6 second load of the disc in this unit.

Quality of picture and sound was as good as could be expected on the 720p tv that I own and even says that it displays at 1080i according to my screen.

I do not have a 1080p tv to know the difference in quality with this unit.

No glitches.

Solid Blu-ray Player, 06/26/2009
By Wesley111, Selma, AL
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

This is a solid Blu-ray player that handles the latest Blu-ray discs and multi-branching titles like T2 Skynet Edition, etc. with no problems. Load times are not a fast as the PS3 and other players but performance is good once discs are loaded.

There is no streaming media options but there is great audio and video without glitches.

DVD up-conversion is just OK at best.

Preview thumbnails are not used like the PS3.

SACD (and DSD) is not supported.

There is a time remaining option which is nice and the info screen is good/similar to the PS3.

There is no eject button on the remote and other buttons are missing from the previous S350 model. The IR codes still work and they can be programmed into universal remotes though to get eject and other functions back. Power Users: some advanced audio/video settings available on the S350 are not available on the S360 (so I've read).

The faceplate flips down when accessing the disc tray. It works well but may cause problems for automated IR systems.

The USB port in the rear is recessed and may prevent larger/bulkier thumb drives from fitting.

All options are easily accessed from the cross media bar (XMB) interface similar to the one used on the PS3 and various other Sony products like AV Receivers, etc.
