This PC is an excellent value. At $298 for an AMD cpu and Windows XP, it can not get much better. This is not a gamer's machine. It is perfect for a tight budget and "normal" PC uses. The small package makes it perfect for small spaces. The eMachines EL1200 is not designed for expansion. But you really don't need it.

I wanted to buy a computer for my 6 and 4 year old. Something cheap and simple. I needed it for visiting the web sites for that age. From the website I felt that it was actually overkill for what my kids needs. I was only going to do one upgrade, just a wireless network card so that I didn't have to run cable to the play room. Well the reviews on CNET are correct for this machine. The case is too small. I have never seen any type of card that can fit into its slots. Even the PCI express card was too small for the case. I tried a USB wireless adaptor, and that's when i found out that the CD drive was bad. I returned it and for $100 bucks more (the price of a decent CD drive) got a HP. The only thing I liked is that it came with some USB speakers. I also had no trouble picking it up, I used that "deliver to store" feature on the web site and I had no problem returning it either. Kudos to walmart for that.

After only a few days, the disk drive jammed and wouldn't release a CD. I had to do a reboot to get the disk back. When I inserted another CD, the drive made a loud vibration and then jammed again. This was my second e-machines in just over two years. Kudos to Walmart for a great return policy!
Recommend spending a little more for HP or Dell or a brand name.

I bought this for someone who really just uses Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer. This computer comes with XP-- NOT VISTA. *Whew!* This computer wouldn't WORK with Vista, so don't try and upgrade it. The motherboard only allows up to 2 GB of RAM (has 2 slots, and comes with a 1 GB stick installed). You need to upgrade to 2 to have decent performance. Vista needs 3+ GB of RAM, so don't ever think of upgrading this-- you'll never have the RAM to do it. My only OTHER complaint beyond the restricted RAM is that there is only one monitor port (VGA). This means you can't do dual monitors with this computer. On the plus side, the tower is small. It's the perfect computer for an XP-loving Internet Cruiser.

Trusted it was a quality mfg. Got it home and the cooling fan squealed bad, Tech support wants me to send it back for a repair, after 15 emails and them having me take the machine apart twice! And, I have to pay the cost of shipping. Hope I can get Walmart to take it back, IMHO be careful of this one....

I am very happy with this PC. This is my third eMachine and they have all been good values. I took a star off the overall rating because it didn't come with a restore disk. You have to make your own with 9 cd's or 2 dvd's. Other than that, I am pleased.

This computer was great for my 55+ year old stepfather who only knows how to check his work email and use Word.
However, it was not great right out of the box. First of all, it had a preinstalled virus. It went from the box to the table and hadn't been online, yet it was infected. The virus just happened to affect Norton 360, which was also preinstalled. After calling Norton directly for help, this problem was fixed.
Another issue was that the keyboard that came with the computer made the computer not work. If the new keyboard was connected, the computer kept trying to boot off of it, which resulted in a blank screen with a cursor. We had to use the keyboard to our old computer, which wasn't a big deal.
One of the great things about this computer was that it has Windows XP. Introducing my stepfather to Microsoft Office 2007 was scary enough for him...if he was introduced to Windows Vista, he would have had nightmares.
The computer was a great deal, considering it was under $300 and it will only be used for work email and Word. The size and weight was great! It was so light and easy to move around, and it was less than half of the size of the computer it was replacing.
Overall, it was a great buy, even if it had initial problems.
