I use the techniques taught in this book with my 2.5 year old and it has dramatically changed our relationship. I find so much comfort in having a game plan and being able to build relationship with her while having boundaries.

Great Book and a Fun Read!

I read this book and then purchased 3 more to give to co-workers at my church with the hope that we will be able to offer a Parent Sunday School class this Fall using the book as the text. The book is full of practical steps for parenting as God intended, using God's love for us to demonstrate a healthy parent-child relationship. It offered just as much to me as the parent of a 20- and 24-year-old as it does for those just starting out. Sound from a Biblical standpoint and fun to read, the book is full of stories from the author's own family experience. I laughed out loud more than once. I'm always on the lookout for books that entertain as well as teach and this one hits the mark. While no parenting book will work for every situation, Loving Our Kids on Purpose offers an alternative to "helicopter parenting" by showing parents how to encourage their children to make good choices, own their problems and find reasonable solutions. And as I read each chapter I thought "I can do that!" I had an opportunity to put some of it into practice right away when my youngest got her first speeding ticket. Instead of offering to take care of this problem as I might have in the past, I stepped aside and let her handle the whole thing, from figuring out how she was going to pay for it, contacting our insurance company for advice, and making sure the fine was paid on time. No headaches for me and a chance for her to own her problem and figure out how to avoid this expensive consequence in the future - revised driving habits. I know that might sound silly, but it was a landmark moment in our relationship from my perspective. It was worth the price of the book, just for that! I definitely recommend this book for parents of toddlers, children, adolescents and teens - it covers all bases. Enjoy!
