An Excellent Soundtrack, 09/09/2008

I, like many fans, was very excited at the prospect of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer score album. This CD is long in coming (five years, in point of fact), and with that being said, I will try to write a helpful review.

If you ARE a fan of Buffy, this CD is a must-have. Christophe Beck composed seasons 2-4 and guested continuously throughout, and many agree that his work while on Buffy is his best yet. While the other BtVS soundtracks are fun listens and bring back memories, there is nothing quite so evocative as listening to the thrilling score of "Massacre" and actually FEELING as if you are with Buffy as she battles Angel and races to save her friends (incidentally, "Massacre" won an Emmy).

With that said, if you are not a fan of Buffy but of score music, I would recommend this to you with four stars instead of five. As a television show, Beck had many synthesizers and other limitations that he had to work with. While this CD has been expertly mastered and mixed, of the twenty-nine tracks, only fifteen or so will truly acquiesce those only looking for amazing instrumental music. Those of you who ARE only looking for the latter will likely still find much to enjoy in such tracks as "Remembering Jenny," "Faith's End," "Sacrifice" and other such fare.

I give this CD four out of five stars, and highly recommend it both to Buffy fans and to fans of score music itself. And here's to hoping that there will be another volume of score music dedicated to the other artists of Buffy as well - it would be much appreciated.

Also recommended would be:
Angel: Live Fast, Die Never; Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Album/Radio Sunnydale/Once More, With Feeling

And, finally, to fans of Christophe Beck, his work on Elektra and Under the Tuscan Sun are also available.
