This super-sized navigator gives a big picture of the route ahead without obstructing your view. It features a substantial 5.2-inch color display, an FM transmitter, MP3 player and lots of entertainment features for fun on the open road. The nuvi 5000 comes with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps and millions of points of interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, ATMs and more. Touch the color screen to enter a destination, and it takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road, and its 3-D digital elevation map view gives you fair warning of grade changes. The nuvi 5000 also accepts custom points of interest, such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

This GPS has some wonderful features, but the show stopper was the fact that there is no internal battery. When the car is off, so is the unit. Then I would have to reprogram it once I got back on the road. I returned the unit and will purchase one with a battery back up. However, the value for the features included was impressive, especially the screen size.

I am a long haul truck driver. My GPS on my Blackberry sometimes does not refresh quick enough for what I need. This Garmin does the trick for me. It also has given me some additional information that I need (i.e. fuel, restaurants, truck stops, etc....) and ETA's Also can plot multi stops in route. NICE...

Much better then I expected so far. Have only had it for a couple weeks. Screen is clear in day or nite A little bit of a pain when first starting cause you need to be in the car and you cant regester till you hook up to satelite. over all I would buy it again

I bought this product mainly because I plan on taking a few road trips in the near future. Lately I have just been using it by driving around and trying to get lost, and having it take me somewhere. I like the MP3 feature, the only problem I have with it though is you can't enable it to automatically start playing when you turn the device on, and that I have to turn the volume of the music down in order to hear the GPS. So I end up having my car speakers turned up almost all the way in order to hear my music while driving with the windows down on the highway. Other than that minor issue, would just be nice if it had a battery so I could use it when it's not plugged into the car, or if I could use it while it's plugged into my computer. Overall, I'm VERY satisfied with this product. Great value, nice big screen, and easy to use and update. It's going to make my upcoming trips so much more easier!

I had used the Lowrence i600 before and was use to it's many functions - the 5000 is a nice enough machine and does what it does well or so it seems. But if you are looking for all the bells and whistles - garmin does not provide it. If you are looking for a point to point machine - garmin is as good as most of them. I love the 5.2" screen.

it is a great thing to have. it is kind of funny it sounds like her voice gets louder if you make her RECALCULATE your turns by missing your turn. doesn't work correctly is off by 300yds and some times more. tells me address is on the left when it's on the right. tells nears intersection which is one block over from intersection I'm at . Not satisfied at all. I have friends that have other models same brand that work correctly.

I drove from New Jersey to Georgia in 12 hrs. "Judy" navigated through detours, new roads and new construction without any problems. I don't know what I would have done without her. My only complaint is it does not indicate tolls ahead (not sure if any GPS does) This GPS came on the market at $700, it still sells for $499, i got it at walmart for just $269 and it's worth every penny!

I purchased this gift for my hubby for Christmas, and overall he loves it! The system itself is very easy to learn, great directions, nice wide screen. He is a truck driver, and Garmin suggests this model for truckers or RV-ers, so this is the one we purchased. There is only one CON -- it does not have an internal battery like some of the cheaper models. I originally purchased a cheaper one that did not have trucking routes like this one is supposed to have, so we exchanged it.
For the price, we still feel it would have been nice to have a rechargable battery. When you want to upload info from the computer to the GPS, you have to have it plugged in the car. Possibly an adapter would be a good idea to have the functionality of "power" to the GPS sytem from inside the home as well.
